When I was in the U.S. Army, I was assigned to use a 90mm recoiless rifle, which is primarily anti-tank. The first time I heard tanks in the field at Ft. Carson, I was amazed that tracked vehicles were so loud. Hear 'em before you see 'um. As somebody assigned to shoot at a tank, ( luckily, I never had to do that ), at least the tanks were giving me advanced notice with all the racket they make.

I picture Ichiki regiment hiding in fear, amongst the trees on the eastern bank of the Tenaru River, of the Stuart tanks spewing canister shot.

Nice wonder when they implemented the upper track guards?

Do you mean the "sand shields?" They usually quickly done away with by the crews.

@@TheSaturnV no not the sand shields, those were cloth coverings, i'm talking about the upper track skirt. I was initially confused between the British and American terms for the tank, the skirt I refer to were on the M3 Stuart, but sometimes they weren't, I see now that the overall hull design is different from the M3, the M5 is more sloped front glacis. But apparently a M5 Stuart also had this skirt often seen on british models whether fully or partially as well as m5's issued to France.

Amazing America sent these baby tanks against germany. Sherman was bad enough.

These eventually wound up being scout tanks only; they didnt have the firepower to go up against Panzers and Tigers.
