Fun fact: 1944 is banned in Russia.
Could this be the least Googleable movie?
Leo Kunnas write more stuff please.
I'll probably check out more Elmo Nüganen movies since I really liked 1944's cinematography but can't promise a video on them.
Songs used in order:
- Bastion OST: A Proper Story
- Bastion OST: Pale Watchers
- Bastion OST: The Sole Regret
- Bastion OST: The Fate Of Jewel
- Bastion OST: The Mancer's Dilemma
- Bastion OST: Slinger's Song
- Bastion OST: Twisted Streets.
- Bastion OST: Bynn the Breaker

As a man who can feel the gradual schism of harsh political divides sweeping over his once united country, the message and overall theme of this film really hits home. The idea of fighting for independence as opposed to any kind of ideology is a powerful one, and it's a theme that few movies seem to be able to showcase, especially these days. It's especially interesting that it revolves specifically around Estonia, a country that doesn't seem to get much international airtime. It's actually really nice seeing another country get the spotlight for once, instead of it always being the U.S., Germany or Russia. Excellent content, love from Canada

Agree...same goes for the Flemish, that were also there, to gain at least cultural independence in a 'greater' German Reich, they fought alongside the Estonians, the Dutch and the Danes. Looking away from the doctrines involved...they were all volunteers. By this time in the war, even the most hardenend National Socialst knew they were never going to win this war, still they volunteered and went into battle - and how ! Not for a leader in Berlin, not for a greater new socialst 1000 year Reich, but for their people, their families, their culture. Whatever judgement finaly history will have over them is irrelavant up to a certain level because.... man.... they had balls.

oddly enough, as an Estonian I am not a huge fan of this movie and contrary to what you might think, I would say this movie is not made for Estonians. Why ? Because we already know this story. The deportations, the Waffen-SS, the Estonian Corp, the bombing of Tallinn, the refugees. It´s almost like sitting through a history class. But if someone asks me why my great grandfather served in the SS or why my other great grandfather served in the soviet army or why my grandfather ended up in Siberia at age 10 - then this flick can explain everything :)

The best films are often the little known and underrated ones. But that is true with life in general. It is the quiet and unassuming, scruffy looking man in the corner of the servicemen's club that no one notices who has served in actual combat and was awarded for it. It is not the noisy fellow whom everyone notices and believes.

This movie is an excellent example of importance of basic soldier drills/skills. I literally came across this film by accident. Yet another underrated gem, this time, from Estonia. A marvelous story with loads of action, excellent acting, and a rare perspective of the second war from the Baltic states under the German and Soviet yoke. The viewer will nearly root for the Nazis at first for the soldiers here are Estonian fascist SS with the only intent of ridding of Stalin's' hordes of communists and not enamored of Hitler and his blood-thirsty Nazis. During the last credits as they roll in the end, a beautiful track plays by an orchestra and a choir that is mysteriously beguiling. I can't find the soundtrack anywhere, however. Below is a link for viewing the entire movie commercial-free. Be advised that the cast speaks Russian, Estonian and German, and the subtitles can be confusing due to mistranslation. What is this stupid brain dead "both sides" Western narrative?? There is only ONE evil that annexed Austria and Czechoslovakia, then started WW2 by invading Poland and doing a literal industrial continental scale genocide against all the Jews and everyone in Eastern Europe that was considered "subhuman" which also included the Baltics. The Nazis killed over 40 million in Europe, the other 40 million dead were mostly killed by Japan in Asia and guess on what side Japan and Germany were on?? Like I said, only ONE evil.
@apgaismiba
@apgaismiba 2 ай бұрын
@jolt9484 Yeah, but soviet union was also the one that helped Germany to invade Poland, if they didnt help Germany on Poland, it might had ended a bit differently. Soviet Union was also discriminating J people (most of europe did although not as near as Germany but they certinley did not want them here). Soviet Union also used similar tactic as Germany did to Poland, by false flagging the justification to invade a country. Look up the shelling Mainila... They both built huge loads of camps, they both ethnically cleansed baltic states. If you ask an average baltic person that had been occupied by Russia for hundreds of years as you were forced to speak that language and had russified and as soon you gained that independence... you later get invaded again by the same enemy, it is not suprsingly why most joined the SS... there was only matter of time where people get fed up and hate so much the enemy to the point they consider the enemy's enemy as their friend. Mao said it himself even in his red book.

Buuut because I couldnt get any English subtitles I dident understand why there was a shift of focus to the soviet side and why the first group of main characters walked away. Also because the lack of subtitles I found that the soviet scenes where their are two charecters talking to be abit outdrawn. But outside of those things. I think the movie is great! Everything from the effects, history, respectfullness, acting and probably plot was really good! IMO you spend way too much time telling what happens in the movie and way too little time analyzing it. If one wants to check your review out before watching the movie he wont find much to listen as you basically just spoil the movie, and if one has seen the movie then one doesn't like that he is told the condensed version of the movie. You should really cut the time you spend telling about the movie and just analyse it more carefully.
@GnorriTV
@GnorriTV 4 жыл бұрын
How am I supposed to talk about the mid film twist without spoiling it? My choice was to either not mention it, just say what happens without any build up or go through the plot as a surrogate way of letting people experience the movie so that the twist isn't "wasted". Regarding what I should or shouldn't do, I don't always just go through the plot in order, I feel like it was justified in this case. Sorry you didn't like it, but the other way to analyze the movie without spoiling it would have been to just assume the viewer has watched it already and I don't think that's a great way to cover a movie. But frankly, going by viewcount, people actually liked the plot recap so I don't think your sentiment is shared by many.

Yet, when said that, why the Soviets, which closed last Gulag camps 1991 when the Soviet Union broke apart, is considered the peace provider when in reality they conquered and ethnically cleansed the occupied territories. It's beyond me.

There's seldom a "good guy" in war, I was just pointing out that many eastern European countries considered the Germans liberators from the soviets while modern audiences have the conception that everyone saw them as evil oppressors. This is also the reason why many people, who are unaware of the soviet's atrocities, consider them the good guys, or "peace providers" as you frame it. They just know that nazis=bad so anti-nazi=good. That being said I think I did a fair job examining the movie's messages of national identity, love for one's people and resistance to foreign ideology. My intent wasn't to depict the Germans as good, if anything I thought I did a good job leaving politics out of this review, I apologize if that came out wrong.

@@GnorriTV The Battle for Narva, the consecutive Battle of Sinimäed and how the 2nd Strike Army was stopped for 9 months is such an important chapter of WW2 that the western scholars don't pick the subject because it will deconstruct the whole western narrative of WW2, which is by the way skewed, wrong and have no right to be supreme over what the occupied territories have went through. The way how Estonian units were enlisted, how the Werhmacht regiments were forcefully joined with the SS Waffen and how in the end Estonians at last got the chance to fight for their country if the Germans didn't blew the army Mittel positions is something that the world doesn't k now yet and when it is made into a move people are give first glance after 80 years to see what it was like. And even then it doesn't depict the reality. Some battles at Narva in February 1944 were more fierce than the Battles of Stalingrad or the later Battle for Berlin. And no, this is not about honouring the SS Waffen, this about honouring the legacy of Estonian units who were there and defended the country.

@@lennutrajektoor I agree, history's too quick to dismiss the bravery of the defeated, it's the main reason I wanted to cover this film. That and the unusual plot structure that ties wonderfully with its themes.

It's not like the Estonians had many options they suffered horrifically during the Russian occupation of 1940/41 is it any wonder why they sided with the Germans in 1941 granted as a Latvian who lost family because of the Russians I don't blame them

Im a communist and I still liked this movie, despite what you said. The nazis get fucking killed and lose haha. Unless you are making fan fiction that is unavoidable in ww2 movies. The movie is a pretty good summary of the Estonian experience of the war, caught between the great powers like a piece of driftwood in the waves, forced to fight each other.

When I said that communist wouldn't like the movie it was because of its strong anti-communist and pro nationalist messages. But it makes sense that "the nazis get killed haha" is enough for self professed commies to like movies that slam communism.

@@GnorriTV Just because it takes a national perspective doesnt mean it is "nationalist" The movie could just as well be described as anti-fascist, it is just as anti-nazi as it is anti-communist after all. Do you think Das Boot is pro-nazi because its a German u-boat? Trust me, I know Estonian and Estonian history. This is not a movie made to "slam communism", its made to show the pain that war and politics inflict on a small nation that is not in control of its own fate. If you dont feel like getting that its fine by me. But I suggest you read what I wrote and think about it for a second if you have any interest in understanding the art. My goal here is not to try to "own you".

 @shruk4 If you can't see the anti-communist themes of a movie where the only antagonist is a Red Army officer that kills the protagonist because he doesn't want to execute children for political reasons you're too stupid to argue with.
