Radiation shows up on film as a sparkler effect, as flashes on the film. So you know this film has been exposed to a considerable amount of radiation. You can see it on many films, including many Chernobyl film reels. Radiation hits the reel of film and distorts the footage with bright flashes. I feel for the filmmakers!

Most of these productions were made for "in-house" use and definitely not intended for public dissemination. Some of the old EG&G (Egerton Germeshausen & Grier) declassified footage is a priceless classic view back at a very peculiar time, when the average American was blissfully unaware of the exact complexity of these things. But they were completely justified in regarding these things with a growing disdain and terror. Nobody wants a brief visit to the centre of the Sun.

Yes, but still. They were flying them at 30,000 ft. They had four engines on B-29s that had hundreds of switches and gauges. That's still amazing. They were flying them in formation flight in this video. I think that's amazing for back in the day. Remotely controlled aircraft have been around basically since the invention of aircraft. The difference though is nowadays, a drone operator can sit in a comfy chair, a nice air conditioned room, with big fancy screens of everything happening, and at a mobile command base hundred or even thousands of miles away from the drone's actual location. Back then you were sitting in an aircraft following within sight of the drone so that you could control it through your binoculars.

This is the second official film I have seen that says EMP is no problem. The other is where they built a town with a functioning power grid right under the blast. They put the wires back up after and it worked just fine.

EMP wasn't much of a problem back then, as the electrical systems were simpler and more durable. Today, we rely on precision tolerances in our vital systems that would be overwhelmed, and absolutely wrecked, by that same EMP. Case in point, vehicles - back then they were purely mechanical machines, but today use insane amounts of electronics that would fail. Think of EMP as fire, and everything electrical as art. In that, I mean that back then we used stone carvings, so it would not matter. Today we rely on intricate but fragile oil on canvass.

At 14:25 they refer to Admiral Blandy. I worked with his grandson, Mike, for about a year, back in 1979 at Bell Labs in Whippany, N.J. He was the spitting image of the Admiral including the same square chin and crooked smile. I didn't know who Admiral Blandy was at the time but others told me that his grandfather was noteworthy after the war.

It's not often one hears _any_ description of the first microseconds of a nuclear explosion. That was most interesting. What was also most interesting was the false conclusion: that electronics worked after the event, mistaken because the EMP generated by that event had little effect on the high voltage valva/tube analogue electrical circuits of the time. The person coming to that conclusion did so long before the age of low-voltage digital electronics. It's a different game now.

For a fission device, the time to double yield is the time it takes a fission neutron (5MeV --> 0.05c = 1ft/20ns) to traverse the pit (about 6"), so it's 10 ns per doubling, with most of the yield happening in 20-30 ns. In this time, the high explosive blast travels 1/300th of an inch, so the entire bomb casing in intact after the nuclear ration ends. A single fission reaction occurs on strong force time scales, 10^(-20) seconds, which is really fast.

Also: black holes were an immediate prediction of general relativity.

I‘m pretty sure those ships were german WWII battle ships, as far as I know the Americans captured an unfinished german aircraft carrier among many other vessels, but I can’t recall if the Germans tried to sink the aircraft carrier and the Americans lifted the ship again or if they failed to destroy the ship completely
