This brought back very fond memories for me My father used to have an Austin 16, but you missed out what I considered to be, the cars party piece the "Universal jacking system" whereby you lifted the carpet in front of the front passenger seat this revealed a small panel which was held in place with a locking screw. When you released the screw you could lift the panel up to reveal a little socket, into which you inserted a bar, which you then moved back and forth in a rocking motion. This operated four jacks one at each corner of the car, and lifted the whole car up at once, (very useful if you got a puncture in traffic).

My 1946 model had the jacking socket under The bonnet. I loved that car! There was a toolbox under the passenger seat too. And in those pea soup Er fogs, it was great to wind open the windscreen. I remember that one of the rubber pipes that drained the sunroof became blocked, so I lay on the road and blew up it. I got a faceful of dirty water!

Reminds me of my 1938 Standard Flying 12 in 1973 we would often pull into garages to be greeted by "Flying Standard no brakes going forward & if going backwards heaven help you" No wonder the Ten Year Test arrived if cars were maintained so badly.... Our Standard was very high mileage and of 1600 cc quite powerful with very good brakes & I regret selling her to replace with a succession of Standard Triumphs always in better condition when sold than when purchased.

Stunning car! I myself have an 1946 Austin 12 HS1 model. which is basically the same as this, except a smaller engine.

I owned a 1946 Austin 12 from 1971 to 1978 when I was a student. Amazingly, the registration number was GOC 470 - the very same number as on the Austin 16 in this video! I have no idea what led to my old number being transferred to this very similar car.

The body looks like it is not painted, but covered with black enamel, how soft and shiny!

Just a quick point. You mentioned the alternator whereas this is actually a dynamo, which is totally different In terms of power characteristics. This vehicle was positive earth, but the alternator is negative earth only.

Just put the heater live through an ignition switched live feed? It's not difficult. Then it can't be left on when the car is switched off and left.

My first love was one of these stately beauties, Rotorua NZ in 1966. So delightful to see your video, the sights and sounds bring it all back. My over protective Dad forced me to sell her because he thought I was too reckless. Keen to know what became of her. Registration # BT2318. Cheers.

My father had one c1955.It was second hand as new cars were practically unobtainable.Everything was sent to America to pay off the war debt. His was green but he had a crash and it turned orange! The paint fell off. It also had a blind which went over the back window. The cloth lining was dirty and smelly. About all I can remember.

we had this British car in india in 1968

this was a solid old car, it was imported from England, in an accident the fuel tank broke, and the engine got jammed due to running dry with that broken fuel tank, to which engine has to be imported from England in 1968. to which the parts were expensive and not easily available that time in India, we sold the car, this is a beautiful solid car, i love it, its black colour reminds me of that car
