Though I'm a traditionalist in liking the Decca-to-early Columbia period best for the Basie band, particularly when Lester Young and Herschel Evans were the tenor men, I love this great orchestra in any period. Basie band stalwart, James Rushing, who had been working with the Count since the days of the Bennie Moten orchestra, was able to put over a pop number with finesse to equal his authenticity on the blues.

I always think of a bridge, Jimmy Rushing, linked irrevocably to Joe Turner performing "Shake, Rattle and Roll", and then R&R. Mind you, one could go back to Mr Armstrong, playing riffs on "St Louis Blues" in 1929, which, once switched to electric guitar, would be instantly recognisable 25 years later. But yes, I'm early Basie, too. I remember hearing "Every Tub" for the first time, and it nearly blew my head off! Still get a huge rush from it, even today.

@@Phaaschh Oh, absolutely! I often make connections of this sort, although it is a little sad to think that something so good could be the progenitor of something so wearyingly simple! Yeah, "Every Tub" is marvelous! -- really, all the Decca stuff is. There was an uncompromising quality about the band then -- which is kind of amazing, given that they were working for the so commercially-minded Decca. That label just emasculated the great Bob Crosby band, bringing in a vocal quartet and syrupy contemporary romantic numbers!

@@Trombonology Maybe they had John Hammond pushing their corner- I don't know how much clout he carried with the big labels. Funny isn't it- they ruined Crosby's band, and yet left Jimmie Lunceford alone to do what he did best. ...Or did they? Come what may, the quality of those Basie Deccas was peerless- fantastic musicianship, matched with a recording quality which was like being hit by a truck!

@@Phaaschh Well, to me Lunceford was never -- or ... well, rarely -- as good after Sy left.
