Check out the video The proper way to hand crank a tractor, it might save you some injuries. The way you are using the crank handle will probably see you visit a hospital with a broken wrist or arm. NEVER PUSH DOWN ON A CRANK HANDLE, Always pull up on the crank handle (It is in the owners manual for this tractor) Also once the engine starts remove the crank handle from the front of the tractor.

I agree with others, you are cranking it in a way that could get you hurt - bad, if it kicks back, which it did in the video. Nice tractor, by the way. Enjoy it safely.

Ours had a little attachment you screwed into the carb for a source of vacuum.

That model did not have a hydrolic lifter. I had a couple of Farmall model "B". They had an exhaust gas diverter that pumped the exhaust into a big cylinder that when the lever was pulled up caused the piston to rise bringing the wire cable to lift the plows. The tractor didn't have enough power to pull your hat off.

I'll check it out. The guy I bought it from told me to start it the way I do because he claimed it was the "safest" way. He claimed the way they show in the manual is dangerous. I have had other people tell me the same thing. I rarely crank start it.
