1949 MG TC EXU, what is an EXU car anyway?

We have a rare 1949 MGTC EXU car in the shop today , but before we start working on it, we decided it would be a good idea to look at what makes it different from a “normal” TC.
With only about 500 produced, they are pretty rare. Some of you may not have even known about these cars, and others may just not have known what the differences actually are. I do not claim to be an expert on them and I may have missed some of the smaller details while going over it, but I have had a couple of fairly complete examples come into the shop over the years and I do know most of the differences.

My first car was a 1949 MG TC EXU which I purchased in 1966 for $1,200, in Southern California . It was everything a 17 year old could have wanted. Great looking, sporty, different and a car that all the girls noticed. With the mild weather in SoCal it was an everyday driver. What a great memory.

The last EXU I worked on was stored since 1966 until it was bought and brought to me (2012 maybe) to put back on the road. After driving it for probably 3 or 4 yrs he sold it on BAT. It ended up going back to England.

One of the strange features of the EXU model is that the front signal lights come on with the brake lights due to a quirk in the two turn signal relays.

What these things didn't have was a gas gauge so you wouldn't run out of gas . As far as I'm concerned, these car should have come with pedals so you could pedal it back to the shop.

Well, at least they have a bright green warning light in front of the driver that comes on when you're down to 2 gallons. Witty comment about the pedals though.
