There's a lot more car here than what most people might think. Prior to about 1973, a Chrysler was the best car that you could buy. Chrysler was our (USA) Mercedes-Benz. And Chrysler had a long standing in being known as "The Engineering Company." Everything about vintage Chryslers is well-made and they will last and last. They're not going to fall apart like the Chryslers in the 1980s. The engine in this 1950 Chrysler is a 251 cu.in. 6 cyl. and they're an excellent engine. Chrysler had been building these since the 1930s and their inline flat-head engines were known as "Spitfire." The 251 version here is bigger than the six-cylinder engines used in their Dodge and Plymouth cars of the day. And I would expect better in some ways because they were going into Chryslers, their top make save for Imperial. Regarding Fluid-Drive. The gentleman in the video had only gone over that in the lightly and that was OK for the video. I can tell that the parking brake was on when he did the test because you don't have to give them gas to make them roll. Fluid-Drive cars will creep when they're in gear the same as any car with an automatic transmission. I'm just mentioning this for the people that think there's something wrong because the engine sounds like it's working a little to roll the car. Nor, am I cranking on the gentleman; I like his demeanor and he makes good videos. So too, his voice is ASMR to me. When other guys make the videos, I feel disappointed. Don't to be afraid of Fluid-Drive. Here's why. The reason Fluid-Drive is a mysterious thing is because only Chrysler had it, and they only used it for about twelve years until having developed a modern automatic transmission. Twelve years may not seem very long, but Fluid-drive certainly proved itself during WWII and in tens of thousands of cars up to about 1953 as I recall. The short of it is that Fluid-Drive was really good, and Chrysler would have stayed with it, but they designed something better, a fully automatic transmission, whereas Fluid-Drive is an automated manual transmission. The Chrysler engineers had gone to work on developing Fluid-Drive in the early 1930s. And when they got it perfect, Chrysler released it in the 1939 model cars. The engineers had developed a system in that, no single part in it was overstressed or strained in any way. As a result, Fluid-Drive is as indestructible as can be. And its operation, driving characteristics, and passenger comfort reached into excellence. If there is any complaint, it would be that Fluid-Drive in the six-cylinder cars, is rather pokey. As in slow on take-offs. From a stop, once the car reaches about 15 MPH it's moving along like any other car from back in the day. Bear in mind, being slow upon launch didn't bother thousands of cab and delivery drivers from enjoying glorious liberation of persistent clutching and shift lever work. Never before had driving been so easy or smooth. Fluid-Drive was a marvel when it was released. It was a big deal not having to shift a car. Reports from the time show that women loved Fluid-Drive. And many women who never thought of driving obtained their driver's license upon hearing about Chrysler's new cars that you didn't have to shift. You'll notice in the video that the Fluid-Drive system has a clutch pedal. The reason for the clutch pedal isn't to regulate the clutch so the engine doesn't stall, though it can be. It's there to make a change that requires the shift lever, something like on modern cars how we have to step on the brake pedal to move the shifter out of the Park position. The shift lever positions in a Fluid-Drive car are different than in a manual transmission car, a.k.a. three-on-the-tree. One difference is: There is no 1st gear position. The position for reverse is located in the same place as a three-on-the-tree with forward positions similar. And there are two positions where 2nd and 3rd gears would be on a three-on-the-tree with the same not pulling the shift lever toward you. Fluid-Drive differs here as instead of having 2nd and 3rd there are simply two forward driving ranges, Low Range and High Range. Chrysler states High Range is Normal. And that Normal is used for all driving, except for times when climbing a steep hill with a heavy load or a steep hill while towing. As well, Low Range gives the fastest take-offs, and then manually put into High or "Normal" Range. I didn't add how to drive a Fluid-Drive car because this became so long. The best source is to obtain a reproduction of the Chrysler Owner's Manual for the year of a given car. However, as simple as it is to drive a Fluid-Drive car, understand that the internet is full of incorrect instructions and descriptions of its operation and components. A side note to this, is that prior to the release of Fluid-Drive, Chrysler wanted to be sure that it would be well received and followed through with a test study in order to gain public opinion from drivers. Back then, everybody that drove was familiar with manual transmissions, their operation and also a decent working knowledge of them. What the test study found, is that people were afraid of a car that had the ability to move on its own. And that's the part that people were afraid of. The car had the ability to move on its own. Chrysler needed to find an answer to let people know that this ability to move on its own was a normal function in not having to shift a Fluid-Drive car. Their answer was to emboss the pedal with the words "SAFETY CLUTCH." (You can see this at 4:35 and slightly at 5:47) In having that on the clutch pedal people understood that there was an actual disconnect the same as with a manual transmission car, and concept (and proof) satisfied people enough to let go of their fear. I own a 1948 Chrysler Windsor that has the same powertrain as this 1950 car, and it's still going strong now, seventy-six years old. My car's Fluid-Drive system and its engine have never been opened up for a repair since it was built. Only requiring maintenance such as fluid changes. The only issue that would be somewhat challenging for the owner of this car would be the brakes. This car was built during the time that Chrysler was using over-engineered brakes. As a result, whenever brake shoes or wheel cylinders are changed, the reassembled brake shoes must be adjusted prior to the drum being installed, and certain measurements must be taken with a special tool developed by Chrysler. The measurements are then used to make initial adjustments, and final adjustments are made after assembley. If all is OK, the brakes will need another adjustment after the they break-in, but the special tool kit is not needed for periodic adjustments. One problem is in locating the special tool. Whereas years back every mechanic had the Chrysler Brake Adjusting Tool Kit locating a complete kit of three pieces (as I recall) has become difficult. I was fortunate in this as my mechanic is well connected with other mechanics and did find a mechanic that had the kit and was willing to lend it to him. The next challenge with brakes would be in having a mechanic with the patience to read the kit instructions, follow the correct procedure along with the mathematics needed, to effectively complete the job. Because of this some have upgraded to disc brake kits that are available but can be costly. These vintage Chryslers aren't for the tri-five Chevy guys, or the Mustang and Camaro guys. They're for the vintage car guys and gals. They're for anyone that wants a well-made vintage car that will last and those seeking a genuine vintage driving experience, and I mean that in the best of ways. The driving experience one gets from these Chrysler's is great because they were and still are a high-quality car, so the driving is beautiful and makes for wonderful hours behind the wheel. While I'm not familiar with this particular car, I'd say that if it's as good as it looks, the price they have on it is good. And particularly so because you get a lot of car with these Chrysler's.

"Gyromatic" was Dodge's name for Fluid Drive. The transmission was GREAT! My dad's '50 DeSoto Custom had Fluid Drive! The car ran TROUBLE FREE for 200,000+ miles!
