1950's Route 66 Vacation 8mm telecine

Filmed approx 1954 traveling route 66 and southwest states. Lots of old cars and trucks. Like to see the old trucks blowing black smoke going up the mountains. 8mm home movie digitized with a Wolverine telecine machine.

I was an avid 66'er. I used to drive it 6 times a yr. Some of those places were still there in '05. In '16 most of them were gone.

I've always loved seeing old photographs of places I've been...and some I haven't yet, but not use to seeing old video footage from this era as such cameras weren't all that common. I particularly enjoyed this video after having lived in Albuquerque for three years, where Route 66 is the main street running through town. Driving on weekends was always one of our family's entertainments so we drove a bit around the state. Some of it on the sections of the old highway shown in this film were places I'm familiar with and it brought back pleasant memories. Thanks, really enjoyed it!

It appears this movie begins in Gallup, New Mexico judging from the motels seen along the highway (66). The station wagon I'm guessing is about a 1951 Plymouth complete with a bug screen protecting the front grill. Beautiful color footage of Arizona and nice with the ending at Disneyland. Thanks for sharing!

They exist still on Route 66, but to a much much lesser extent. The Walmarts, McDonalds, Starbucks and Dollar Stores have taken over America from coast to coast.

Yes, I agree the distance sign looks like Needles 15. I believe the rest of the sign reads Barstow 165 and Los Angeles 242.

Which area had that bridge surrounded by blue water? Is it still that way today or is it more brown?

I believe it is the Colorado River right at the Arizona California line. Not sure if the water is still blue like the film. Just checked Google maps and it has a greenish tint along with blue

To answer your question the river is quite wide and blue. Colorado river is a major waterway along the NV/CA/AZ borders as such people boat and enjoy the river.
