My earliest memories are of living on Taiwan as a US Army brat. This was 1953 - 1956. My father was an Army officer and we lived in the middle of the island in the Taichung area. I remember armored columns driving around the island and planes dropping leaflets. My father told me later on that Chiang Kai-shek was constantly threatening to invade the mainland. There was still shooting going on between some smaller islands and the mainland. I still have my fathers MAAG-Taiwan patch.

Thank you for publishing the clip which is valuable to history lover. As a native Chinese, I have relatives on both sides of the civil war. This is the same situation for countless Chinese families. As you know, Chinese value their family more than ideology. So it is well accepted till now that we are ONE FAMILY accross the Taiwan strait. Despite politics and ideology, people can live and work freely on both sides, and treated as native citizen. So independent or not, I don't think that makes much difference in common people's life. Hope US will not interefere too much because we all know what that means... from history.

The US-China relation is stressed in the end because I liked how the old intellectuals approached a completely different culture with objectivity, analytical thinking, firmness, etc. all these things that we are lacking today. Imagining defeating a U.S. equipped, motorized, 3 million men army and conquering such a large country with primitive military equipment (no jets, no battleships, few tanks, limited ammo). Even though Mao made many political blunders when managing China, he is a military genius. Some people in the comments really have no idea what they're talking about. He occupied rural areas to encircle cities and sap the adversaries. He started from the north and pushed to south. He used many flanking and encirclement tactics. And he didn't have any formal military education. This is pure genius! I bet if General MacArthur, whom I think is an overrated 5-star general, led the nationalist army to fight against the PLA under Mao, he would be whining for more nuclear attacks to help him in months.

@PANDEMIC BY CCP AND XITLER Even after the war with Japan, the KMT still had far superior numbers and better equipment over the measly CCP fighters. In 1946 Chiang was still well respected, had many experienced veterans under his command and had strong holdings in all the wealthier regions. The KMT outnumbered the CCP over a million troops. Despite all the odds Mao still won anyway with an army of peasants against a professionally Western-equipped army No matter how you spin it, Mao is clearly a better tactician than Chiang. That's probably less due to Mao being a genius, and more to the fact that Chiang was kind of a moron who turned all his allies away from him and allowed Mao to hit all his weak points. In the end many of the KMT's own regiments and generals abandoned it and joined the communists.

@@華涵妍 what the other person was basically saying wad that you should just sweep history under the rug. Forget the horrible atrocities committed by certain people or groups and look at how well things are going now. This is basically standard practice in many authoritarian countries. One of the most important things that you can do, as a high school student, is to become very critical of all information that is presented to you. Where does it come from and who is presenting it are very important questions that need to be asked all the time. Unfortunately, people raised in authoritarian countries or environments have a lot of difficulty with this mainly because they don’t like to be challenged. Being challenged is dangerous and that is why they prefer that everyone just think and say the same things. Make sure you ask your foreign teachers about this. They are not always perfect, but they are probably going to be a bit more open to questions and how to go about questioning others.

CKS (蒋介石)1946 victory was superficial. Before KMT attacked CPC occupied cities, Mao commanded most cities should have a alternative base in the mountain (Mao learned the lesson from the root cause of PLA long march). So CPC established their base in the prepared mountain right away after they gave up the cities to KMT. Mao called it a strategic retreat. Eventually CKS fell into the same mistakes as the first three defeats by PLA in 1934; The last two was successful due to the help of German consultant and forced CPC to give up their base and started the long march. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. CKS should be blamed for the defeat of China civil war.

And tried to use the flood to stop the Japanese advancement. The flood killed at least 500,000 civilian and made more than 5 million civilian became refugee. Evidence showed the flood attack did not stop the Japan advancement but also gave CPC a chance to convert some refugees to their soldiers.

The root reason was the brutal political purge in 1921, CKS not only brutally killed a lot of people who believed in communists in that brutal campaign, he also killed almost all those leftists in the Nationalist Party. Since then, The Nationalist party lost all its connection with and support from grassroots in China. On the contrary, CPC has a lot of supports from ordinary Chinese. The brutality of CKS was beyond people's imagination. After Red Army left bases in Jiangxi and other southern bases for the Long March. CKS ordered Nationalist army to kill all adult males and burned down all houses

A territory of a sovereign nation is not to be "recognized" by a foreign nation, what you see here is simply a matter of America's double standard and hypocrisy, using such standard, America simply ceases to exist, not even the original 13 colonies. Tibet was not a part of China until the 18th Century when Manchu's Qing Dynasty finally managed to have a solid grasp of that enormous piece of beautiful land, the Nationalists' ROC (Republic of China) and later the PRC (People's Republic of China) simply just inherited the land from its previous regime.

Almost lost his life when the 1959 riot suddenly broke out, he witnessed innocent people getting chased and cut down by the rioters with sabers. Was a horrifying ordeal. @@david-lonewolf8924 Pretty much the point I was alluding to. How the US tends to flip flop. However, also interesting- Didn't the ROC have claims on Mongolia proper while the PRC dropped that claim since it was a Soviet client state? (Note {outer} Mongolia not being part of China) However, at least from my study- Tibet broke off from China with other warlord states in 1911 when the Qing Dynasty collapsed and the incumbent KMT was unable, or didn't have the resources to re-conquer Tibet because it was too busy fighting warlords (Northern Expedition, Beiyang army, Japanese pressures in the north), and after 1927 the Communists post Shanghai Massacre. As a result, Tibet was defacto "independent" from 1911-1951 because both the KMT and PRC were too busy in eastern China fighting themselves or the Japanese. Similar sort of story with Xinjiang and White Russian and later Soviet influences in the area until 1949 when the Soviets told members of the former ETR (East Turkestan Republic which was a Soviet puppet like Mongolia) to stand down and accept PRC annexation.

The film is misleading. Chinese KMT German trained and supplied 88 and 89 divisions were lost in battle of Shanghai in 1937. There were only about 20k troops that later had to defend Japanese invasion army of 100k. Initially Japanese only had a few thousands marines, but they had support of Battle Cruiser Izumo and Air Force Bombers based in Manchukuo. Later Reserves and Kwantung Army from Manchukuo would be transported to Shanghai as invasion main force. KMT lost because Truman had no interest defending China, and US took Japan, and China were ceded to the Soviets. Potsdam Conference Stalin demanded Manchurian Rail Roads, Port Arthur, and recognition of Mongolian Independence to separate China and Soviet border. Truman left Chiang to defend China for himself, while Mao and Kim Family were supported by Soviet to take China and Korea.

The ones who were willing to stay they stayed, the ones who wanted go home they were sent back home with free necessities for the travel. Some of those who overwhelmingly defeated and then remained became ones of the most fearless warriors during Korean War against UN troops. Many ppl lose their purpose to carry on, just get by day by day, but when you start to realize what you are fighting for, you would be fearless too. It was the people’s representatives (aka, the term senators in the west) voted to pay them the debts, because “Chinese pay their debts”. For example, China had to slaughter 5000ish pigs per day just to send to Russia to pay debts; Russians used the gauges made by metal wires to select the best fruit out which was to collect the debts, and as for the rest of smaller but good apples or pears they just dump them as trashes, which worsened the situation that the people were suffering from shortage of food because of the draught. Well, Chinese pay their debts! Also both Russia and US were threatening to use N-bombs against China, China had to start to store strategic-storage foods to prepare the possible nuclear war. Blaming everything to Mao is misleading from the history which is just another tool of propaganda from the west. And it is always easy for you as a keyboard warrior to criticize a state leader while you have no solutions to uplift such a huge country in that situation to a better future as a whole, maybe you do have your own short-term one with no dignity-bow on your knees to the west one more time so they could tear the country apart and let it slip into a swamp of warlords again, then the west could suck the natural resource out to profit their capitalists just like how they have done to those Mideast and N-African countries. For Tibet, you can argue what you want about history but the people of Tibet did not want to be a part of China, and most still do not. You can apply the same argument to any piece of land as well. Italy under the Roman Empire ruled all of Europe for hundreds of years, do they have a right to all of Europe? I don't think so. Also the "more than 2000 years ago" thing is just not true, I'm not sure where you got that from. It first became a part of China during the Yuan dynasty (And that was under foreign rule, since the Yuan was under the Mongol Empire) in the mid 13th century and then went on and off becoming a part of Chinese empires and independent when it could. @@coolmansawesome First, as the leader of Lenin’s religion, Mao Zedong did too many ridiculous and even sinful things. As a Confucian collectivist, I hate him extremely. But his original intention was to pursue fairness. The various atrocities committed by Western colonists in China shaped his extreme character. (For example, he believes that all wealthy people are lackeys of Western colonists) Second, Mao Zedong made many mistakes during his time in power, but he did not kill ethnic minorities. On the contrary, as a communist, he spent his whole life attacking Han chauvinism. For example, during his administration, he firmly opposed the implementation of Mandarin in ethnic minority areas. (At the same time, Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore forcibly promoted Mandarin and abolished dialects in Singapore) In 1978, the popularity rate of Mandarin in China was only 20%. This has greatly hindered China's economic development. Therefore, Mao Zedong's ultra-left policy is completely wrong. But when you say he killed ethnic minorities, isn’t that pure nonsense? You should criticize him for overemphasizing national autonomy and forgetting about national unity. Invasion of Tibet? Why do you dare to continue lying under this video? Documentaries shot by the United States in 1937/1944/1950 all clearly marked Tibet as Chinese territory. Doesn’t the video you see now label Tibet as Chinese territory?

Where is the dignity of the country and the nation? Lincoln is called a great hero in American history. According to you, Lincoln, who stopped the division of America, was a bad guy? Considering that the United States before Lincoln was a confederacy, states originally had the power to withdraw. Lincoln's actions were actually unconstitutional. But Americans still call him a hero. What's more, China has an absolutely unified system of prefectures and counties since ancient times. Second, The Yuan emperor converted to Tibetan Buddhism. During the Yuan Dynasty。The Tibetan monks wanted to expand their power and led Tibet to actively join the Yuan Dynasty. From that moment on, Tibet became Chinese territory. Where did the aggression and expansion come from? Tibet became Chinese territory without any war. As for whether you are willing or not. Why can you, a Westerner, speak for Tibetans? During the rule of the Chinese Kuomintang, the Soviet Union desperately tried to divide China's Xinjiang, Tibet, and Mongolia. The United States firmly opposes this. The Communist Party of China came to power, and the United States desperately divided China's Xinjiang and Tibet (Mongolia had already been ceded to the Soviet Union at this time). The Soviet Union stood up and firmly opposed it. Please tell me, Do the local people in Tibet want to separate, or do the Western colonists want to separate China??

Communist soldiers were poorest of the poor they defeat the rich military supported by US Government. Before 1911 the whole China was under a slave and serfs system as Dynasty. just a footnote. Madam Sun Yet sen ( the Father of China) Soong Hang Ling was the vice percident of CCP Chinese Communist Party until she die. and her youngest sister Soong Mei Ling is Chiang Kai Shek's wife . The KMT keep shake the Forbidden City 2000 years of the treasure. My late father was a soldier in China he alway said Chiang was a good men but his relative were corrupted. A weak leader bleed corruped followers. follow the money of the auction house. People tried to stay away from talking about "Corruption" It was and still is a cancer of any fail Government. I mean, in hindsight, can you blame us in the U.S? Mao's collectivist farming policies and forcing regular people to make steel on their properties killed 60-80 million people from famine and other causes. In contrast, while Chiang still killed millions, he didn't kill NEARLY as many as Mao did. Couple that with the anti-communist education system we have here in the U.S, and it's pretty damn easy, albeit a low bar, to call Chiang a saint in comparison to Mao.

Congratulations for this and for the other excellent documentaries presented by Periscope Film. They show the clear differences between the capitalist-imperialist line and the socialist-communist line in (1) ideology (vision of the world); (2) politics (ecibinic, political and social program for the workers and the people and for the rulling classes); and (3) organization (economic, political, military, heath, education, ethics). Capitalism-imperialism is a system, a mode of production, a type of ownership of everything essential for life based on individualism, greed, domination of others, etc., while socialism is a system based on the collective ownership of all the means of production (land, tools, machines, means of transportation, etc.). Throughout the history of mankind, one mode of production was always replaced by a better mode of production : from primitive communism (prehistoric societies), to slave based empires of the Antiquity (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, etc.), to the feudal societies (with nobles and serves), to capitalism. The French and the Industrial revolutions created 2 new classes, the bourgeoisie (the capitalists) and the proletariat (the working class). It is evident that capitalism is concentrating all the machines, the meanes of production in fewer and fewer hands and that the gap between rich bilionnaires and poor workers is becoming explosive. Capitalism is destroying the planed and is destroying itself. Socialism was born with the deep analysis of Marx and Engels, who studied the German philosophy of Hegel, the British political economy (Adam Smith, Ricardo, etc.) and the analysts of the French Revolution (the class analysis, the class struggle, the feudal and the capitalist states, etc.). The Soviet Revolution, the Chinese Revolution, the socialist revolutions and the national liberation revolution throughout the world show that the international working class and the peoples of the world are growingly conscient and actively preparing to put and end to the exploitation of the workers by the capitalists, the oppression of the peoples by the capitalist state, the plunder of the natural resources of the countries by the monopolies, the constant crisis (economic, political, social, ecological, hunger, humanitarian crises due to the capitalist planning of the world economy for profit instead of the socialist planning of the economy to serve the people), the growing fascism and the permanent imperialist wars. For a united front against fascism and war - Canada - pueblo1917@gmail.com

LOL Let me guess...you are a Communist Your education/programming is evident. You have been seriously misled. Capitalism is the most equitable of all systems. Only 1 correction to your excellent analysis, which is that capitalism is an economic system, not a political one. In fact communism relies on centralised capitalism. There are only 2 questions arising - which system is most compatible with human nature without recourse to repression and totalitarianism, and which system will allow for the continued survival of the vast and poorly understood web of life on this beautiful planet of ours on which all human life depends.

Nobody would mind Cuba being a concentration camp if they didn't export their dogma of hatred to anywhere in the world that they can. CCP was prompted up by USSR, while KMT was abandoned by USA. 14:39 the communists were wearing Japanese helmets. They had most of the arms of the Kwantung Army after Japan’s surrender. The Communists also had tremendous Soviet heavy artillery which the Kuomintang utterly lacked. Equipment and effective usage of it made the decisive difference, not the mystical guerrilla warfare. 17:40 the gentleman’s advice to Truman was spot-on. Unfortunately, KMT supported Truman’s opponent in Truman’s re-election, and that made a personal enemy out of Truman.

After the Japanese defeated the Kuomintang it left China to be occupied by the communist. The Communist did not fight side by side with the Kuomintang. Capitalism or Communism? The true 'political father' of China is Sun Yat Sen. Upon his death, the two brothers fought over the control of China. MaoZedong began the long march to form the farmer's regime against Chiang Kai Shek's pro-American army. Finally, Generalisimo Chiang defeated and escaped to Taiwan with the Sun's sisters. At last, China became a Communist country in 1949 when every foreign properties were 'nationalised' resulting a close door to the outside world. Hence, self isolation and trade embargo began when the Communist Chinese had to grow their own foods resulting in an Agarian China. She wrote the book 'Love Is A Many Splendid Things' by Pearl L. Buck. Till today, the question remained 'Why are the pro-Communist generations of 'the little red book' keep leaving China after opening to the world in 1979. Strange..indeed!
