70 years young- 58 myself. I never got to see any of these in the theaters, but sure watched them on Friday nights on Creature Features- KTVU channel 2. Old Bob Wilkins was my best friend and only those growing up in the 70's and 80's San Francisco Bay Area will know who Bob was. He initiated so many into the wonders of B movies.

I actually saw him on TV when I briefly vsited Oakland in 1973. The movie was Night of the Living Dead. He kept apologising during the commercial breaks because literally all of the violence was censored out. He assured viewers that it really was a gory movie.

"Terror From the Year 5000" is one of my favorite MST3K episodes. "We promise, the terror is coming soon." "Your face . . . it's horrible." ("That's a great bedside manner you have") And when the woman from the future goes in for the kill . . . "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!" Can't get enough of that.

In the 1970s, in Southern California, the TV station KTLA aired all of these really bad old movies on Saturday afternoons. My father and I would sit on the couch with popcorn and a lot of laughter.

I watched many of these “B" movies as a kid at the Saturday afternoon matinee at the Maplewood theater… cost $.25. Three cartoons and a double feature… usually a Three Stooges short and a SciFi or monster flick… those were the days.

You need to see the Soviet-era Russian epic "Ilya Mouramets", about the mideval hero of Russia. Gorgeous costumes, fantastic battle scenes, superb cinematography. But the acting is on a par with Ed Woods' "Plan 9", and the strapping hero Ilya is played by a fat bearded codger that has to be in his 60s! The dragon and demon are a hoot too. Definitely one of those "so bad it's good" movies. 😊

I've seen a few of these on TV through the decades - I'm 67. Never watched them at the drive-in as Mom was squeemish wth horror movies, even the silly ones. 😒 "Manhunt In Space", so the budget only bought cheesy space helmets, but our heroes braved space in cool t-shirts!? 😅

Absolutely. I've heard so many people trash the make-up, but I think it's excellent..and STILL can't figure exactly what sort of make-up/appliance/paint techniques were used to give the illusion that the guy's face was half-missing, right down to the bone. It's one of the best horror/sci-fi effects of the era, IMO.

68 here. Watched these movies and more on the midnight movies. Used to love to watch these. Later I became a electronics technician in the geophysical sector. The knotheads that built the test fixtures I had to use were definitely fans of these movies. Lots of switches and blinking lights…not all absolutely necessary.

I saw The Brain Eaters on a double bill with Earth Vs The Spider back in 1957. King Dinosaur makes you wonder why the explorers from Earth had nuclear bombs. Loved Rocky Jones. Watched it every week.

Yes, her face stood out right away to me. Her performance in Them though very regimented was actually very compelling !! Having a small role in such a highly regarded film is an accomplishment. I’ll always remember James Whitmore calling out to her “Hey little girl “ as she was walking in her robe in a smoking hot desert. Sitting up in the back of the ambulance when they first play the sound of the ants communicating with each other is classic. Good catch my friend !!

My fave in this category is "Robot Monster" (1953 ). The title character is a guy in a gorilla suit and 19th century diving helmet, who hangs out in a cave (for no adequately explained reason) and a bubble making machine. You need to accept that after singlehandedly wiping out the entire population of Earth, he's unable to locate one surviving family, who are within walking distance from his cave. The story turns out to be a little boy's dream. What a clever and original ending 😅

Frankenstein's Daughter 1958 is one of my favorite cheesy 50s Sci-fi horror movies. There's a scene early in the film that is very similar to a early scene in Nightmare on Elm street.

"Back in the day," we had chiller theater on WIIC. An NBC affiliate. Every Saturday night a double feature with Chilly Billy Cardille. (Who plays a reporter in the original "Night of the Living Dead." 1968) The show was so popular SNL was not shown live but tape delayed till around 2am. In Pittsburgh area from 75-76

Great video! This is my first time seeing your channel and I subscribed immediately. I’m quite a bit younger than you, but have always loved these films and have sought them out on UHF, then cable, then VHS, then DVD, and now mostly streaming and KZbin. I’ve seen all of these except for “King Dinosaur” and I may have seen that but forgotten it. I really like your list, though there are so many more. The one glaring omission I think is “Plan 9 From Outer Space”; I know it’s been seen and talked about to a ludicrous degree, but it’s really the definitive so bad it’s good 1950s sci-fi movie and I love it. My first horror movie at the theater was "The Deadly Mantis" in 1957. Our parents dropped us off to see "Old Yeller", but it was sold out. As a 7 or 8-year-old, it was still more amusing than frightening.

"Space Children". One of the 1st movies I remember watching as a wee lad whereby the alien turned out benevolent. One, Eadie Johnson (played by child actor Sandy Descher) which I watched soon after in "Them" played the wandering catatonic child in the opening scene.

The electrocution scene at the climax of War of the Colossal Beast was actually filmed in and shown in color. It's only a few seconds; but a "shock" to moviegoers at the time.

1960 Chicago, Hub and Allen movie theaters. 3 monster movies and 10 cartoons for 25 cents. Our parents would drop us off and pick us up 4 hours later. Attack of the 50ft woman, Attack of the Puppet People, and The Tingler were my favorites.

Two of my favorite monster movies are Curse of the Faceless Man (1958) and From Hell It Came (1957). Each movie involves a man-monster, each movie has the monster carrying around a beautiful girl in its arms and (in my imagination) each actor in the monster suit was given the stage direction to "walk like a monster".

The Sci-fi movie The 4-d Man 1959 a scientist discovers a mysterious secret about passing his body through solid objects. He is able to steal stuff from banks and stores without triggering the burglar alarm. He just walks through the walls and walks away with the loot. The problem is he prematurely ages and has to constantly kill living things in order to avoid the consequences of his actions. He also goes mad.

Is in both cases unbelievably ambitious Visual effects for low budget movies and Is some shots still hold up. They were going to reuse steve mcqueen as the lead but he was such a pain in the ass to work with on the blob That they wound up jump starting Is a new career instead. All that comes from the Discussion track with the director and Harris on the Criterian DVD release of the Blob.

Do you agree THESE movies for the most part were being shown at drive ins popular at the time where couples went to do things other than watch action on the screen. No it was where THEY engaged in actions with steamy windows being the result. Any schlock could be up there as the drive in HAD to put something on that big screen and it wouldn't cost them much to rent the film.

I don’t know about “circling back around to being good.” I suspect watching one these days would become tedious after about 10 minutes, and especially if I had to pay to stream it. But I do know that as a 10year old in the very early 60s I wasn’t laughing at the special effects while seeing these at 25 cent Saturday afternoon matinees with 50 other kids from the local neighborhoods. It was chilling and thrilling and a whole lotta fun to watch with friends, and then to play monster hunter while walking home. What a time.

The only one of these I've seen (about 55 years ago) is "Prince of Space". There was also a second movie with the same character. I remembered it as "Prince Planet", maybe that's his name or the dubbing into English. Great list! Good work!

Well, the spaceman superhero--whether an Earthling posing as an alien or a genuine alien posing as an Earthling--has always been a huge trope in Japan movies. _Planet Prince_ (not be confused with the anime _Prince Planet)_ was a TV series of which _Prince of Space_ was a theatrical reboot. But there was another TV series, _Super Giant,_ which starred a hero dressed very similar to the TV Planet Prince; his adventures were cobbled together into four movies under the name _Starman_ (although that name was never used in the titles because of copyright). And that's not even counting _Invasion of the Neptune Men,_ a one-shot theatrical film in a similar vein featuring the hero Iron Sharp/Space Chief! _Prince of Space_ and _Invasion of the Neptune Men_ are popular episodes of _Mystery Science Theater 3000,_ but the undubbed originals are also found on Shout!Factory's Classic Tokusatsu Collection Blu-ray set AND still streaming for now on Shout's KZbin "TokuSHOUTsu" channel (under _King Kong Lives_ for some reason). The dubbed versions are also easy to find on YT. The Starman movies can be found on PizzaFlix's YT channel.

@@ScreamingScallop Thanks for that. It is possible I'm confusing the movie with TV programs. There were dubbed Japanese programs on after school TV here (Australia) in the mid to late 60s. "The Samurai" and "Phantom Agents", I remember and possibly that "Planet Prince" you mention although I think I saw the movies on late night TV. "Astro Boy" was the popular animated TV program. Thanks for the tips. Just went looking for "The Samurai", it seems its Japanese tile is more like "Spy Swordsman". Internet Archive has it under "Shintaro: The Samurai". Must get going, Shintaro is waiting!
