Thanks for the video. This is the first sewing machine that I used, when I started sewing at 6 years old. My Mom and Grandma were both seamstresses that taught Home Bureau and 4H. Mom had the Pfaff 130, an incredible sewing machine. I've had several different brands of sewing machines over my 64 years, and in my opinion, the Pfaff is the best built sewing machine. I have ALL the attachments for my 130, as Mom had every one of them in her sewing arsenal. I'll be using the button hole attachment today. ;)

I inherited a PFAFF 130 from my Grandmother. It was hardly used the last 50 years and not at all the last 30 years. I thought I would start doing some upholstery for a hobby and I remembered I had this unit stored in the back of my closet. I pulled it out and am impressed with the shape it is in. The zig-zag stitch adjustment is frozen up so I am trying to free it up with some penetrating oil. I am really looking forward to getting this unit back in tip top shape to see what it can do.

Very nice video. I have two of these machines. One was my mother's and the other one was one she found and bought for me so I could learn on it. My mother passed away in 2016, so now I have both and am still learning. She was a life-long seamstress and used to have a commercial shop making draperies, slip covers, pillows, and all manner of interior sewn goods. She really was talented and could sew just about anything she had set her mind to. When she was in business, she had several commercial machines and she always said the Pfaff 130 was her favorite. She loved hers and I'm happy to have it. I just used it last night to hem some pants. It's such a joy to use quality tools whether it be a chainsaw, ratchet, or sewing machine. I have a whole box full of specialty feet (foots?) for the machines, but I only use it for straight stitching sewing up aprons, welders hats, or hemming pants mostly. Thanks again for the great video!

Hi theSergeant, this is one of your best videos and one of your best sewing machine demonstrations. I’m sure your restored machines sell very fast, but I hope to get a chance to obtain one of your gems one day. Your vast knowledge of vintage machines is more impressive that most other presenters, so I feel I can trust the information that you convey. Thank you again for a great video. You’re cool under pressure, too...thread broke, no sweat, I love it....just rethread and move on. You’re the best! Too cool.

Man I love your videos. I agree. You didn't need to redo the video. I was given a Singer 101 with all original attachments, booklets, and the original table. That thing is minty mint! You talk about a luxurious machine. I've gotten all the top straight line Singers after watching your videos. Even a Necchi. You do great videos and you've helped me with my machines many times.

One of the best sewing machines to ever do it!! The only weakness was the Nylon Timing Belt which the 138 corrected by being gear-driven......With that being said, modern zig-zaggers have wider widths (like 9-10mm) which makes even something like a Singer 20U more attractive than a 130. I don't really use my 130 anymore, sadly.

Now I have started to use it again. Mine is in a console with a chair that telescopes in. I have kept it oiled but never had it professionally done. The zigzag is frozen but I can move the dial. I have been making masks lately and it works great. I live in Atlanta, Georgia. Do you know anyone here that has the knowledge that you do on the Pfaff 130?? Pls let me know as soon as possible. I am just wondering how you get that deep shine on your machine? I also have a Singer 201 and I would love a deep shine on it too. The clear coats on both machines seem fine. I recently picked up one and it works well, but i notice that when i do zig zag... I feel like the gears or something is slightly binding or not smooth through the stroke. This only happens from right to left as the needle reaches the apex and starts it's downward stroke. If I turn the wheel manually there is a slight hesitation. If i run it with a straight stitch ...there is no binding. Only when I zig zag it. I've opened up the back and the hesitation coincides with the up stroke of the guide that rides in the valley on the back of the zig zag knob shaft. On a straight stitch the valley almost points up to 12 oclock ,so no hesitation there. If I go to max zig zag the valley is pointing more to 2 oclock, so I can see why it's working harder. Hope i explained it clear enough. Any suggestions?

Hi thesergeant, I have the opportunity to purchase either a 30, 31 or 130 for some finely detailed leather work, linings, straps and some lighter duty canvas work. Essentially I want a machine that can go through 3-4.5mm of leather with excellent precision, but be easy to maintain (parts) and service myself. I want an impeccable top AND bottom stitch. Do you have a recommendation on which I should go? Right now, the 30 is the most affordable ($100), the 31 ($200) and the 130 ($450-700). They all have steel handwheel, not the plastic style you discuss above. I realise the 130 has the most options on stitch type, but really, I'll be doing mostly straight stitch (hopefully with some LR RTS needles and want the best result possible. Your sage advice would be SO helpful! What would you buy for this type of work - J

Hello Sergeant. I just acquired a Pfaff 130-6 and the tension seams to be sensitive to fabric types, requiring a lot of adjustments and needle changes or it skips stitches. Do you find that to be the case with your experience? Mine skips stitches.
@1953childstar
@1953childstar 7 жыл бұрын
It could be that your timing needs adjustment if you are skipping stitches..

thank you for your reply! I took it in and had the timing adjusted. When I got it back the tension was a mess and I couldn't get it right. I took it back in, and the tension cannot be adjusted correctly. He said I may need a new tension device. So I purchased a new tension and now the presser foot won't stay up. One thing after another. Hopefully this is an easy fix.

@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 4 жыл бұрын
You can get away with T70 bobbin and T90 upper but that's pushing the limits of this machine. T70 upper/lower is a more realistic limit. Make sure to use a chisel point leather specific needle. Try a 100 but you may have to go up to a 110 needle. This is for chrome tanned leather. The 130 isn't suited for vegetable tanned leather.

You say on your Pfaff 30 video that these have a belt that breaks and renders them useless. What would be the motivation to buy one then? Especially at the price they command. I am 38 and have been sewing since I was a kid. I would love to upgrade to a nice vintage machine from the cheap plastic Husqvarna I’ve been using and have been looking at Pfaff. Now I’m hesitant. Hiya and firstly , thank you for all the great videos that you post . I have just bought a Pfaff 130 and maybe you could please tell me what the lever that is on the upper tension mechanism's right hand side is for please ?? It can be pressed down or raised up and appears to alter the tension but I can't find any reference to it in any of the manuals so I am confused . Thank you in advance for your help.
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 4 жыл бұрын
That lever adjusts your "check spring". You can adjust it to accommodate different material thickness. The check spring keeps tension on the thread as the needle descends into the material. You want the check spring to be pulling on the thread slightly until the needle eye is buried in the fabric.

Do you know where I can purchase the buttonhole attachments & where I might find a good explanation on how to refurbish it? It does run & I've had it serviced but... Sorry for all the questions but you seem very knowledgeable.
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, the machine does manual buttonholes, so you'll have to mark them out but there are stops on the zig-zag width dial that will allow you to make consist standard buttonholes. Google "Pfaff 130 Manual", the procedure is in there. If you want to use an attachment, which produce excellent buttonholes of all sizes/shapes, I suggest you look into a vintage Singer buttonholer with cams. You can find them on eBay for ~$10-15. You might want to join the yahoo group "oldpfaffforum" for information on how to refurbish the machine. Goodluck and enjoy!

Thanks so much! We'll see if I can get it working right. It's skipping lots of stitches on the zig zag, one of the two things I wanted to use it for other than buttonholes. Hi! I just found this video today, and I would really appreciate it if you could give me some advice. I ha the exact same machine, in a beautiful table, with an original receipt from 1950, and a certificate of lifetime guarantee for the original owner. I was told it works, but when I tried to check today, the wires are all crunchy and falling apart, so I didn't even try to plug it in. So my question is, is it worth getting serviced? If yes, how much do you think it would cost? Right now I just really want it out of my house, since it's taking up space. If anyone reads this and is interested, I'm in the Bay Area. Please respond to this comment. Thanks!!

What oil do you recommend lubricating a 130 with?
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 9 жыл бұрын
Tri-flow is a pretty popular and commonly used lubricant within the vintage sewing machine world. A lot of people also use fully synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil with great success. Tri-Flow is good initially because it's pretty effective at removing and dissolving hardened varnish.
@mortenq3153
@mortenq3153 9 жыл бұрын
thesergeant Ok, thank you :) Think ill buy som Tri-flow tomorrow then. Its because my girlfriend just got a Pfaff 130 last week, well taken care of by an old couple, and before them it was at a tailer shop. Its set up as a "biesemachine" class 130-115 (Not intirely sure what it means, just what it says in the book), so its ready to sew with 2 needles. Also got a Pfaff tin can with it, full with parts, an original danish instruction manuel, extra bobbins and so on. Its sitting in its original tabel, driven by an old danish produced 0,15 hp / 2500 rpm motor (Which i today resoldered some wires and changed bearings in). Payed whats equivalent to 79.5 USD.

Do ou know where I can find the light bulb for this machine? Its a screw-in type and the threads are about 1/2" in diameter.

I don't yet, sorry. I've been meaning to do a complete "basics" series so how to master the understanding of these machines so you can use any of them sight unseen.

My pfaff130 has some additional rotary phone type dials on the back of it, wondering if you could tell me how those work? Looks like it has something to do with the zig zag options.
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 4 жыл бұрын
Google "Pfaff 50010 attachment" or "Pfaff Coffee Grinder attachment" and you should be able to find instructions. The short of it though is that you rotate the small knob at the bottom of the stitch width adjustment dial to allow the dial to move freely. The lever on the back right of the attachment sets the width of the decorative stitch and the one on the left cycles through the different patterns. You can also change the needle position (Left/Center/Right) to change the look of the stitch as well.

I am about to inherit a Pfaff that looks very similar to this; I have only had a chance to briefly look at it but will be picking it up later this week. Do you have a website that talks about restoring these old Pfaff machines? This one has been sitting in a barn/garage for ages, but has been folded up into the table and therefore has not collected much dust on the machine itself. I would love to learn more about restoring these, and if you can point me in the right directions, or even have a site of your own about them, that would be great! :) Thanks!

I don't have a site. In the future I'd like to do a video going over all the steps in restoring a machine but with two kids under 5 I don't have a lot of time these days.

@@thesergeant3524: True enough, that. Still, good to see the videos you do have, and maybe one day in the future, yep. :)

Can the 130 Sew heavy materials sail cloth, vinyl, Heavy cordura?
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 Жыл бұрын
Technically it can but you really need to match the thread to the material and depending on the project the Pfaff 130 won't like working with such heavy thread and such large needles. The limiting factors here are feeding ability of the machine and proper thread tension.

What is the little leaver by the side of the of the tensioner used for?
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 Жыл бұрын
It controls the 'check spring'. You can adjust it depending on the thickness of the material. You want the tension to release just as the eye of the need enters the fabric.

your opinion about Pfaff 130 vs. Pfaff 130 Auto Embroidery??
@1953childstar
@1953childstar 7 жыл бұрын
None of the "embroidery stitches" are functional, only decorative. I Prefer the older Singer machines because they have Blind hem, multi zig zag, and overcast stitches which I actually use. I personally have no use for decorative stitches.
