Last actual remaining "first Porsche" Type 64 is still unrestored. You can see quite a lot of similarities between that 1939 car and this one. Both "borrowed" heavy from Tatra 97. Funny enough Muricans destroyed 2 other Porsche Type 64 in existence so only 1 remains.

A little story (actually a quote from the Porsche factory tour) for Jay, since he mentioned the seats not being RECARO seats in the video: It is a well known fact that Reutter built the majority of Porsche bodiesfrom 1950 until 1963, when Reutter became part of Porsche. Not all of Reutter's employees very happy about this change so they started their own business, based on the company that was registered 1957 in Switzerland: RECARO REutter CArosserie ROhbau. Reutter coachbuilders. And obviously the RECARO name is still in the business (RECARO Holding), but today the car seats business belongs to Johnson Controls. Just a little fun fact I thought you'd probably enjoy :-)

These cars had a bog-standard interior (possibly) because this car was not designed to be a racing car in the first place. The first bespoke Porsche racing car was the 550.

Gildo Schuster Honestly the type 64 (based on Volkswagen Beetle, the type 60 Porsche to be exact) of prewar fame was the first Porsche and the first of the racers, but the 356/1 was the first definitive Porsche.

@@Doctor_Robert If there was one person I would want to drive and crash my car it is Jay Leno. The publicity etc. would encourage him to fix up the car better than it was before at no cost to the owner. Also a 1-off car is the only car in the world who's value is unaffected by wrecks or rebuilt titles. It's the only one in the world. If it had been compacted at the crusher, it could be rebuilt and sold for millions, so long as you could prove it was the same car, and nobody would say you should have left it in the crusher... It's all on account of egos and money and the way car guys are. In this instance, it is a power play by that boy who is promoting his fathers shop, and acting all big by oneupping the crown prince Mr. Leno on his own program.

It is a beautiful car for a period race car from that time frame from the European racing scene. It is also funny in a way because people always give VW's a hard time for having such a small air cooled under powered engine but here we see that a race car a Porsche no less shared a huge part of it's power-train with the lowly VW bug. 40HP and winning LeMans in it's class and 28th over all. The extreme light weight 1300lbs. speaks volumes to the less is more idea that was also at work with Lotus.

This is an amazing story by both of you. Glass windshield and perspex racing windows. Juat loved seeing the red inside of the headlamp buckets. Authomotive archeology. This is some great history and we can add being on Jay Leno's Garage to its history. My '74 that I ran into was in Rennsport IV at Monterey. That's where I met Jay for the first time in person. My '74 went through so much but eventually I had to sell it. My car was some kind of a test car for Porsche before it was sold. It is considered to be the earliest Porsche still on the road in North America for the 1974 year. It has a unique set of trial gauges in it and it has the holes that are factory drilled for the optional factory plastic race fuel tank that was not offered on the 1974 models but rather the 1973 model. Clearly this started life as a long hood chassis and then was built up as a 1974 and sold to its initial owner who bought it from Mark Motors in Oxnard (a dealer few people recall let alone having ever heard of. The cars DOT sticker and original license plates are still with the car. That sticker has the completion date in July 1973, belleive it or not. The color is factory original emerald green metallic. During my restoration efforts on the car, more than one independent Porsch mechanics stole parts off of it. This inlucde the paint code badge and the original accordian covers for the bumpers. It also included the original American headlights. What else was stolen, I don't know. The engine, transmission and body remain original to the car. I had help selling the car and it went through one of the main people in Orange County Cars and Coffee weekend show. The original gauge cluster that is totally unique to this particular car is still with it. I have lot of Rennsport IV photos of it. The custodians sent me a letter saying that they could tell I loved the car. Due to illness at the time, I sold that 1974l It has gone to a good home. The car has experienced a hard life and after an accident, I could have junked it, but I had it rebuilt for the third time under my stewardship. AF

I love this clip. Porsches first car to win the Lamont 24hrs race. And also to know that they orginally had two but then were down to one. That's like working a long shift only to find out that you now have to work literally 24hrs because your relief couldn't make it. And the company's entire future rested on this little car is crazy. Every car in Porches history and inventory owes a dept of gratitude to to this little car.

I don't know what he really meant by that, whether they found some NOS 16" tyres, as the car had been a race car it was certainly not on its original tyres.
