I was lucky to pick up a 66 when I was a kid in about 74 from a guy in a funk band in Detroit. Many guitars have come and gone, but the 66 and the Fender Vibrolux amp I picked up from the same era still sit in the front room.
@davidkieltyka94 жыл бұрын
Both sound great. The ‘66 has the same warm metallic emphasis to the notes as my ‘82 JV series “62 reissue.” 😁

Great video as always John! My favorite year for Fender has always been 1966; especially late '66. I'm sure you realized your goof: CBS bought Fender in 1965, not '66. 🤪 This so-called transition logo is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Why? the "transition" logo was not a transition at all. The larger gold font first appeared on Stratocasters during 1964, and was seen up until the middle of 1967; however, I have seen a few from 1968 with the so-called transition logo. It appeared on Jazzmasters during the course of 1963, and on the Jaguar in its first year of production: 1962. On the Telecaster I've seen on odd one as early as late 1965, and an occasional one in 1967; come to think of it, I might have scene an odd one from '68! (?) The absolute CBS decal is of course, the big black print, which made sense as it would show up better on television-especially black and white-and in in print media. Personally, I much prefer the "transition" type one the other two, but that's also because I favor that period of Fender most. As we know, corporations have to purchase supplies in large quantities in order for things to be cost effective, and I time so they don't run out of what they need in the middle of a production run. I'm sure those in charge of logistics ordered the bolder gold logo long before Leo ever thought of selling the company, and just happened to have them ready to go by sheer happenstance. Here's another misnomer: the reverse F logo first appeared on the 1962 Jazz Bass bridge cover. It also appeared in 1964 on the amplifier tilt back legs. (Maybe even 1963?) Of course th e F neck plate, and F tuners are true CBS appointments. If you're interested, I have the largest vintage string collection/stash in the world.

In the 80's I had a 54, a 57, and 59 (3) tone sunbursts. 1965 Dakota Red and 63 Blonde. Out of those the 59 was super light and sounded different and killer from any other Strats I've owned.

Awhile back I bought a Fender F65 acoustic on eBay. Came with one of those black/yellow/red Fender straps from the mid-Seventies. It was stiff as a board so I ran it through the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Came out soft and supple.

The midrange of the 55 is very different to the 66. Thicker, richer, warm but clear. A bit more Tele ish. The 66 is snappier, quieter and more scooped. More like your quintessential Strat tone. Loved both immensely.

That can't be a true '55...the sunburst with the red between the black and yellow was done from mid-'58 onward ( before that it was black to yellow sunburst only ) so that body has to be a '58 or later. Not only that but a '55 body would be ash; the body in the video has almost no wood grain visible and looks more like alder. Nice guitar, though.
@johnbohlinger4 жыл бұрын
Factory refin 60s . I think it's ash.. there is grain, but I could be wrong.
@poekicker4 жыл бұрын
Too much reverb. It masks the subtle differences you are looking to hear in each guitar. That and the fact that the amp isn’t close mic’d, make this a fun video to show off some very cool guitars but not a great comparison of tone.
