Don't forget this video was taken during the military curfew period in Taiwan. If it was not Tom Jones as a GI stationed in Taiwan anybody else took these films most likely will be arrested and in deep trouble. That makes this film more precious as a Taiwan history video.

That’s not true. I live in Taiwan in all those years. Unless someone is filming military installations, he or she would NOT get into trouble. Camera has become common and popular in Taiwan since the 1950’s and in my family we took photos everywhere in Taipei where we lived, including in front of the Presidential Building (總統府)。I had also taken photos near the runway of Taipei’s main airport of the time Sung-Sang Airport ( 台北松山機場) or outside and inside the Grand Hotel (圓山飯店) (which was owned by Madame Chiang Kai Shek and the premier hotel in Taipei) and never encounter any trouble or inquiry by private security or the police. Taiwan was under martial law for a long time, like 40 years, but the everyday life was minimally affected and there was never actual curfews since I was a little kid (born in ‘50). It’s not that I like or approve of martial law but retrospectively, it was needed in Taiwan to stabilize the political situation after KMT’s retreat from mainland China and under constant threat and infiltration from the Communist Chinese regime. Fortunately Mr. Chiang Jing-Guo lifted the law a few years before his death and paved the path for democracy and freedom in Taiwan.

This is not a ‘video’ as we normally know it but a long compilation of many photos taken in different time and locales.

Born in 1956 , deeply touched ... Thanks a lot for bringing me back to those good old day ... :)
Great photos of Taiwan for 1957-1958. Helps me understand an important period.
