I got a .75 for my Christmas many years ago, never managed to get it running properly, such a simple engine don’t know what could have been the problem

Mark, nice one brought back memories, the frog 80 was my first engine back in 1964, think it was a mk3. It went into a KK Champ and them into a Teetray c/l combat model. I had hours of fun in village rec. Wish I could remember what happened to it. Cheers

Nice video Mark - it's lovely how you keep it real - showing the trials and tribulations of getting an engine you don't know to run. Nicely done.

Lovely little Frog 80..Quite a good seller in its days..as a low price.. but it is wel made,as all Frog engines....And a great one for a FF model indeed...Now you have to make a choice Mark..what to build? :-)

This is a Mk2 or Mk3 as it has the coarse fins, the Mk1 fins were finer. I have Mk1 and Mk3 and the Mk1 with the O ring contra is a more difficult engine to start and adjust, also for some reason a lot more of a biter.

Runs OK, looked like the front of the crankshaft had a slight bend like one too many bad arrivals. I imagine from its age that it has been in many models.

Yes, there was a slight wobble, but nothing too concerning 😜

I had one of these back in the 1960s. One day I couldn't get it to start for the life of me, so I went round to my pal's in the evening, and we worked on cleaning it, etc. Finally, around 1 am, we'd done all we could, and my pal insisted that we should try and start it. I said "don't be ridiculous", but he wouldn't listen. We had the engine on a piece of wood, clamped to his Mother's kitchen table. He wacked the prop with his thumb, and the thing burst into life (with no mufflers attached). And those things are LOUD, especially indoors. His Mother came rushing down the stairs in her nightie, thinking the house was exploding or something. That engine ended up fitted to a control-line flying wing, which I gave to that same pal when I left the UK.

This was my first engine and, as you are finding, it was very difficult to start. I abandoned it and got a Mills instead.
@MarkRobinson5552 күн бұрын
Don't think it's a difficult engine to start, in fact it was quite easy. It took a while to find the right settings, as it often does with a new/ old engine, but once dialled in it was easy.

I was 11 years old at the time. The local model shop owner told me that the Frog 80 had a reputation as a difficult starter and I had no problem at all with starting the Mills 0.75.

@@davidpoll1042mine started easy enough, wrecked it by screwing down the contra-piston to hear it knock. What an idiot.
