3/2023......I was 6 years old in 1959,....it was around that time or maybe a year or two later, my aunt, owned one of those 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz's. She and her husband were wealthy,.., he was in the Jewelry business, and made a good living. My parents were more middle class,...we owned Dodge's. So my aunt's Caddy was parked in our driveway in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. Me and my young chums, were goofing around, chasing each other around my aunt's car. I wasn't watching close enough and kind of stood up, and got clobbered by that extremely pointy tail fin. My wound didn't draw blood,....but I had a walnut sized knot in the middle of my forehead, for weeks afterwards. Boy did it ever hurt! Ha!

Lou, What a piece of real estate that 59 caddy is! My older brother owned a 66 caddy convertible in the Florida keys, one day his friend got his Ford 150 stuck in the sand when trying to pull his boat and trailer out of the boat launch. He asked my brother to help pull him out of the water with his caddy. When his friend honked his horn in the F150 they both where to pull out the boat and trailer out at the same time, they tied a tow strap to the front F150s tow hooks and the other end of the tow strap was tied off to the back of my brothers 66 caddy convertible. The F150 had its parking brake on so it would roll back further into the water with his boat and trailer. As his friend was climbing into the F150 his hand accidentally hit the horn, and my brother hit the gas pedal of his 66 caddy convertible and literally pulled out the F150 boat and trailer with the F150s parking brake still on… that’s how powerful those big old caddy’s are! I believe it had a 465 if I remember correctly. and the color was baby blue. We used to cut bait on the hood of that car, imagine blood dripping down the front hood and fender of the baby blue paint! Those where care free times to say the least! Lol

I'm active in the automotive community and see a number of late 50's early 60's Cadillacs, but this one is a really nice example. The color is very classy and the leather interior was beautiful. If you haven't been around one of these cars, the camera tries, but doesn't quite reveal the scale of these cars, they are really big and the 225" length is incredible on this car. I have a new '19 Cadillac CT6-V which I think is large and this '59 Cadillac is over a foot and a half longer. Very few garages are large enough to park a car like this. However, when you arrive in a car like this, you are instantly noticed, thanks for showing us this wonderful car.

During that era you couldn't get a Cadillac that was anything but a big V8. Cadillac went to V8s early (1915), dabbled with V12s & V16s during the 1930s, and returned to V8s during the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s. In the '80s they brought out the Cimarron, a car best forgotten. That broke the all-V8 trend.

As rolling sculpture, and a big piece of automotive history, yes. BUT, I've driven a few of these land yachts, and I'd choose a V6 Camaro - or even a Honda Civic - to drive. Nice to admire the lines and trim of this 60 year old classic antique, but the Camaro, even Civic will out-brake, out-handle, out-accelerate this car, and most - if not all - of this genre. And then there's aerodynamics, weight distribution, and ergonomics...

It fits in modern garages just fine. They have to hold Escalades, Suburbans and Hummers, and often two of them at the same time. Back in 1959 garages were often built to hold just one car, and they didn't always have a car as big as a Cadillac in mind. As a young driver it was pretty scary trying to fit a Caddy into a garage that was barely 8 feet wide.
@SteevK695 жыл бұрын
@@dlwatib My house was built in 1954 - the year I was born - and has a single-car garage. But it is so narrow, I can't see how it fit '50s & '60s cars. Since I bought the house, I've owned a 1996 Eagle Talon, 1999 Eclipse, 2003 G35, 2008 G37, and now 2017 Camaro. Each has been marginally harder to fit...

It would be nice to see a more technical video of this car in more detail. Like the gas cap, the operation of the power vent windows, the bucket seats that the back folds all the way forward to keep the hot sun off the seat cushions when the top is down. Show that the sun visors hide when folded down and inward hiding under the windshield. Turn signal indicators on the front top of the fenders. Comment on the tobacco industry influence on placing all the ashtrays and lighters and the big "lighter" sign on the dash. Show how the air ride works. If the radio has the "wonder bar" show how it changes station when pushing the floor button that looks like the hi-beam floor button.

I have a friend who has one in South London, England. I can't seem to recall the actual number but it was either 1000 or 1001 of 1320. I used to take old people and sick kids out for rides in it, a car that makes everyone smile when they see it. I was driving in London one time and an American fella jumped into the road, i hit the Power Brake and just managed to not run him down. Startled i stared at him and he told me excitedly that his father had had one of these when he was a child and never thought he see one of these on the streets of London! He must have come from a relatively wealthy family as iirc you could've bought a couple of houses for the price of this car at the time. Although my friends' car is now red after it was restored in Sweden (where he purchased it) the original colour is the same as the one in this video. For its time it had a ridiculous amount of electric power, front bench seat (forward, back, angled, sideways tilt), all windows including quarters, roof and that little gizmo that sat centre on the dash was to turn the full beam down. The lights at night were magnificent, all 8 at the front and 4 rockets at the back. The massive steering could be turned full lock with one finger and had an amazingly good turning circle. I absolutely loved driving this car, a pure cruiser although at a speed higher than 40mph it starts to act like a big boat. It sounds like a V8 should and i think this engine in particular (2 of them in one boat) was used by Riva in their Aquarama model. My friend only made one addition to the car, he installed a 1958 Philips 45rpm record player, it made every journey epic. Thanks for reading my ramble and posting this video. Jel.

The color is either Wood Rose or Persian Sand . The lighting makes it tough to get an accurate hue. As for the position of the R for the gear selection it wasn't just an issue for cadillac because several cars had odd set-ups and it was made worse by the Chrysler Push Button system plus the Edsel . Reverse was finally placed beside the forward selections and no longer between them . The push button system had flaws to jump in and out of a selection or stick in place , Ford found that many owners brought the car back for a conversion to the column selector . Packard had their own set-up as well.
@nonelost18 жыл бұрын
Gary wood Also, with neutral being positioned in between reverse and the forward gears, it's not so easy to go accidentally from forward to reverse, or vice versa, thus destroying the transmission.
@josephgibbons16317 жыл бұрын
Gary wood GM had that color in other lines. Chevy called it Desk Pearl. Looked great on a 57 chevy I saw.
@dlwatib7 жыл бұрын
Probably not Desk Pearl. That doesn't make any sense. Typo for Dusk Pearl? paintref.com/graphics/chip/gm_1959_cadillac_acme_c_03.jpg shows that the Persian Sand Metallic was exclusive to Biarritz & Seville only. The Persian Sand Metallic color should be verifiable by a color code 98 on the firewall tag.

I felt dizzy at some points in the video, good video apart from that, thanks.
@DougCameraMan7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that You Tube video stabilizer isn't that great as it causes a waving effect that really sucks. I'd rather watch a camera shot that was a little shakey. In fact, I think you can remove the stabilizer effect and revert back to the original if you want. I've used it on a few of my videos before I got fed up with it. MY camera work is pretty steady to begin with so I didn't feel it was worth the wave effect to try to get the video even more steady.
