These Lincolns,58,59 and 60, were the most beautiful cars that Detroit ever produced. That's my humble opinion. I've had three of them.

Different tail lights in the Lincoln versus the Continental, among many other features. It was more than just the rear window. I remember seeing both of them on the road back in the day. You could always tell a Lincoln from a Continental.

The front fender molding which was unfortunately toned down in '59 was meant to represent the 1930's Model K Lincoln by LeBaron fender sweep. Very few people appreciated this after a gap of 20 years.It's true,if you've never driven one its size and weight will fool you as to how competant an American luxury car can be.They possessed all the power and handling any sane person could want.

I like the 383 MEL, a racy motor, 4.300'' bore and 3.300" stroke. She'll run at 7500 RPM morning noon and night, but she is a real big block with a 4.900" bore spacing.

No, at the time my neighbors had a new 58 Lincoln, with a regular back window, and a single large tail light on each side and fabric interior. The Continental had the back window that went up and down, and 3 smaller tail lights on each side.it was also more deluxe with leather etc. One said Lincoln, the other said Continental. Starting 1961 it was a Lincoln Continental. This was 1958-1960, Mercury didn't get that back window for a few years, like the mid 60's

How much seating space, is on the back seats ?? Was it much less than say a 1961 ?
@Teraforce886 жыл бұрын
Considering that the rear seat in my uncle's '59 Mark IV holds 3 people with TONS of room to spare, and possibly even 4, I doubt it. The biggest disadvantage would be the lack of rear doors, making the rear seats harder to access (though the front seat backs do fold forward to make it easier)

How does this compare to the 1959 Cadillac eldorado barritz? I thought that this was the king of american automobiles.
@doctorzaius40849 жыл бұрын
clobbyhops The Eldorado Brougham was the top dog at Cadillac in '59, it was much more expensive and "exotic" in a sense, as it was nearly a coach-built vehicle (assembled in Italy by Pininfarina). The Caddy's styling was even more flamboyant with those enormous fins, and it was definitely seen as a more prestigious and luxurious car. There was also something of a backlash against GM's over-the-top 1959 styling, but there were still plenty of people who wanted their cars to be as gaudy as possible - and although the Brougham was only a limited production model, the rest of the Cadillac lineup soundly trashed both Lincoln/Continental and Chrysler's Imperial in sales. The '58-'60 Lincoln and Continental styling was considered "avant garde" or just "too weird" at the time. Chrysler made a big splash with their Forward Look cars in '57 and GM played off of that for their '59 models. Ford went in a different, more modern, direction entirely and paid the price. Prior to this, Lincoln had shared bodies with Mercury for years and this was Ford's attempt at making the brand more distinctive. They certainly succeeded at that, but not in a way that resonated with the buying public, unfortunately. Personally, I love 'em - but I've got 60 years of hindsight on my side, too. On paper, the Continental was bigger and badder - the biggest unibody automobile ever built, in fact. This is an enormous car, and under the hood is an enormous 430 cubic inch V8 producing 375HP (gross) and an incredible 490lb-ft of torque; all backed up by a modern, torque converter automatic enabling effortless, silky smooth operation. Cadillac's 368 V8 was no slouch either (especially when equipped with the triple-carb "Power Pack" option) but not quite the monster that the early 430 was. GM's Hydramatic was also showing its age by this point, but its durability was legendary, which is why Cadillac stuck with it for so long. The Caddy gave a somewhat smoother ride, but it was all at the cost of having a ridiculously soft suspension. The Lincoln's more rigid structure gave it better road manners while still having exceptional ride quality, and unitized construction ended up being the future for all cars. Both had lots of zany gizmos and doodads, but the power folding top on the Mark IV droptop with reversed, opening, glass rear window takes the cake, IMO!
@Porsche996driver5 жыл бұрын
Ford got their money’s worth on the hardtop convertible engineering. Why didn’t you show it? Why no shots of the car on the road to show the tighter suspension? Why no tight shot on that unique dash? Why not ask the name of that color? Why why?! 🤣

It aint the '57 or '58 Eldorado Brougham but i'd take it......

I love these Lincolns even though the much cleaner and more advanced 61's were a much better car, both in design and engineering. However, in their brief day, the 58,59 and 60 Lincolns were tops for me. In retrospect, by more the modern standards of the 60's and 70's, I regard them as the best looking ugly cars ever designed. But ugly is a strong word because the fins were conservative by late 50's standards and the body sculpting of the 59, vs the 58, was a bit more subtle.

Agreed! And the subsequent series of slab sided Lincolns were also better cars than those 58-60 beached whale Lincolns.

There was a '56 Mark a lady in our community owned, and it was a Hollywood show stopper. The car reeked quality, smelled like a million bucks, and the paint looked like liquid that was inch deep. The next door neighbor drove a new '59 Mark IV. It was ostentatious, but there was nothing "magical" about it to garner a second look.

I had a 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V. Broke many jacks & would not fit into my Parents Garage. Trunk could hold a whole drum set as I was a Roadie for his band. My Girl friend like the button tuck & back seat was gigantic. Miss my car. My Dad & sister ruined it.
