One of these scout cars saved my dads life in northern Ireland from an IRA roadside bomb. 16/5 Queens Royal Lancers. Commander of 3 vehicle convoy from what I remember. Flipped over by what was effectively an anti-tank mine using manual trigger as they drove past. Ended up flipping the ferret in to a ditch. My old man carried the scar on his face for the rest of his life. A picture of him years later with the queen with that scar as a Sergeant Major is one of my most prized possessions. I'd love the opportunity to experience one of these vehicles. I never got the opportunity myself as they weren't in-service during my short period in the British Army. Very cool that you have one in such pristine condition.

@David Galea Don't forget that they weren't killed immediately, they were taken to a back street or something, and a security camera caught the moment before they were executed, but the British authorities chose not to intervene and save them, I guess they didn't want to create an even bigger massacre.

Hi Jay, thanks for the memories, I drove the Mk 2 Ferret in combat in Cyprus in 1974 and Northern Ireland in 1974/5 with C Sqn 4/7 RDG (Royal Dragoon Guards). Is that not a 7.62mm GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun)? It is definitely not the .30 Browning we had fitted. In combat all the hatches would be shut, but it could only withstand a rifle bullet, not even a armoured piercing bullet of 7.62mm. Stealth and speed were the best defence. Once you are used to the pre-select gearbox and the reverse angled steering wheel they are fine to drive, due to the forward reverse selector it is as fast in reverse as forward. They can wade up to about the height of the front armour joint if the belly drain plugs are fitted, but they cannot swim. The Mk5 Ferret fitted with the TOW missiles had the swim skirts fitted, just like the D Day Sherman’s. Your Ferret is in far better condition than ours were when they were in service! 😬 If you need someone to come over to share a beer and show you a few photos of the old girl on active service give me a call?

@@chuddeluxe Hi, The Bren was phased out in the 1950's. It was replaced by the LMG (Light Machine Gun), this was often mistaken for the Bren as it has a similar looking construction and the curved magazine. The LMG used the standard British Army 7.62mm round to match the (then) newly issued 7.62mm SLR, in infantry sections the LMG was the section support weapon, so the ammunition similarity was essential within the Platoon and Section environment. For information the Bren used the old .303. The LMG was mounted on the MK1 Ferret, tho one without a turret, it was mounted on a pole mount at the front of the large upper commanders hatch, and was fixed across the vehicle when travelling. Neither the Bren nor the LMG could be fitted inside a MK2 Turret as the magazine on top of the weapon would have prevented any depression of the gun due to the magazine hitting the underside of the top of the turret. It would have to be a belt fed weapon. I have checked all the photographs I have and all our MK 2 Ferrets with turrets had the .30 Browning mounted. and during my career from 1972 to 1991. I seem to recall the MK2 Ferret only used the .30 Browning, however I didn't really see them much after the early 1980's, so it is feasible they had the GPMG mounted as a modification later because the 7.62mm ammunition was more easily available, or maybe even when the MK2 was sold to other countries. There was no issue with ammunition in our Ferret troops , (Troop = 4 x Ferrets and 8 personnel), as our side arms were mainly 9mm SMG's (Sub Machine Gun) or occasionally the 9mm Browning Pistol. We tried carrying the SLR in Northern Ireland, but it was far too long to get in and out of the vehicle easily. Interesting point is that in the first Star wars film, the Storm Troopers carry folded SMG's (firing lazer bursts) Ha Ha!!!

I saw Ferrets when I was in the Army in Germany in 1972. I was stationed in Vilseck, Germany which is part of the main training area of Grafenwohr. I believe they were being used by the French Army at the time. I do remember they were very fast and would raise a long dust trail zooming down the tank trails. They were like sports cars compared to most other vehicles. I should add that while France withdrew from NATO in 1966 they only withdrew from the NATO Command Structure. The French Army, under a secret agreement, kept troops in Germany for several years after. I believe I saw the last French troop convoys leaving Germany in late 1972. I was stationed at a ammo supply point (663rd Ordinance Company) and remember we retrograde shipped specific French ammunition and ordinance back to Kaiserslautern, Germany as it was no longer being used. I also remember French AMX30 tanks and AMX13 Recon vehicles at Graf. Those were the days!!!

@ 1 min mark: "it's not a tank..." Thank God for a pro like Jay! I get so tired of stupid people posting on YT vids of either a wheeled, lightly armoured vehicle like this or a completely unarmed and unarmoured tracked vehicle and referring to them as 'tanks'. Bless Jay for getting it right. A couple of comments, however. The Ferret was still in use right up until the 90s. On our tour in Cyprus in 88, the UK Recce Tp was still using them. Later tours by friends confirmed they were still in use in the 90s. Canada used them as our armoured recce vehicle until replaced by the Lynx. That was beyond 71. The WW2 Dingo was not a turretless Ferret. Ferrets came in both variations: with or without turret. Canada's Ferrets were turretless. Most of the latter UK Ferrets I saw had turrets (we were jealous). A school chum in Australia considered buying one for less than $1,000 AUS in 1981 but the law said you had to have a co-driver in the commander's hatch to be able drive it on public roads. I'm wondering if all those cameras negate that need? Finally, Jay you need to exercise your rights in the USA, submit the correct forms, pay your $200 tax stamp etc and put a real MAG 58 7.62mm GPMG in that turret! Why? Because you can. Do it before Joe and Kommie-la strip you of that right.

That was the first vehicle I drove when joining the British Army as a tank driver in the early 70's. Looks in good condition. PS, they were used long after the early 70’s. By specific units.

There is a very recent British Tank Museum "Tank Chat" on the Ferret scout car, done by the legendary David Fletcher :- kzbin.info/www/bejne/o17VgnmtpJiIg5I from around 5 minutes in there is a sectioned chassis, you can clearly see how the trans is laid out, and much more if you are interested.

Jay. If you get a British Scorpion/Scimitar tracked recce vehicle, a light tank in all but name, you can take that on the road no problems. Plus it goes fast with its jaguar engine.
@davidjones3324 жыл бұрын
I can vouch for that. A platoon of Scimitars once overtook me on a motorway hard shoulder!

They can be difficult to learn how to drive, the early ones in my day were anyway. Gearchanges could be very jerky until you got the knack, a bit like changing gear on a motorbike..with your foot. Never attempt a tight corner in a high gear at speed, you wont go around..the steering and gearbox are integrated, having said that they will do a neutral turn...that is to spin on their own axis with the tracks turning in different directions at once. Excellent fun and the jag engine was great.

The ALVIS Family CVRT's are not tanks. You will loose a lot of friends calling them tanks. :-) An oppo of mine coming back from Southampton in a Scorpion after deployment , was told by his commander , get on were on leave when we get home. So as it was early in the morning he did . Next things Blue lights and pull over . 'You're doing 65 mph in a 50mph zone. Can't be it's a 'tank'! They don't go that fast ! He did get charged with speeding, but it got thrown out as a 'Tank' can't go that fast. The CO gave him a pile of crap for it though:-)
@samain113 жыл бұрын
@@51WCDodge It is a tank, a light tank. Tanks are categorised by weight class or purpose. This vehicle is armoured, is a track laying vehicle steered by it's tracks and has a 76mm gun in a 360 degree rotating turret, in other words...a tank. I also do not believe that an armoured vehicle would be released to travel independently on a public road. If you were disembarking from a deployment there would have been tank transporters and a convoy escort to return them to their unit.

I ran the POL point - thats the petrol station basically - in a British Army barracks during the mid 80s, and we still had those back then. Only without the turret, just a hatch. It was a reconnaissance vehicle that was difficult to spot, as it was just as high as a sports car and not much bigger. Very thursty though, and not the most reliable thing to drive. In northern Ireland they used different things, the Humber "Pig" APC, that looked like a delivery van. But a very solid one... :)

Hi from across the pond. I drove these when I served. Not sure what MG you have on board but we always had Browning .30. Bit of a pain to drive in the winter.In winter I always drove with a gas mask on with the canister removed. They stop on a sixpence, not bad for 4 tons. Recon vehicle, that's why it goes fast in reverse. Pull up to the bushes slow, next to no exhaust noise, preselect 2nd, move gear change lever to reverse, then you are ready to bug out. Cameras instead of a commander, great idea. Cross Country performance very good, go anywhere a Stalwart will go, except amphibious. Thanks from a gratful Sapper for the memories of some enjoyable times. Stay safe.
