Cool ride! I learned to drive a manual transmission in a 1952 Cadillac ambulance née hearse. It belonged to a Civil Air Patrol squadron that I was a cadet member of. They had no place to keep it, so I volunteered a corner of our large driveway. They asked me to start it up a couple of times a week to keep the battery charged. Being a newly minted driver, I figured it would be a shame to start it up without taking it around the block a time or two. So, with a bit of trial and error, I taught myself to cope with a “three on the tree.” If I remember correctly, it had a flat head V8 and a 6 volt electrical system.

My grandfather drove brand new Cadillac hearses from the factory in Piqua, OH to Memphis. TN during the 1960s (pre-Interstate in many places). Some of them displayed INCREDIBLE paint finishes: gold sparkle, silver sparkle, blue sparkle, pink sparkle, etc. My folks house was about halfway between the two cities- so my grandfather would stay the night with us during these transfer trips. No telling what the neighbors thought about these hearses parked in front of our house!

I believe that was a Crown Superior coach body, built for Ambulance or Hearse use. It's called a 3 way loader, because you could load a gurney or casket out the back, or either left or right sides, hence the suicide doors. You opened both side doors, folded the front seat down, and the roller deck would come forward, and pivot 90° and pull out the side. Miller Meteor built a 3 way as well, and they are both rare! It also made the car 3.25 feet longer than the rear load. Nearly 26 feet!!!

People bought these as family cars, too. I almost bought one from a guy who inherited one from his dad. The family used the car to travel from west TX to Fort Worth, It was essentially a luxury station wagon. The whole extended family piled in and went shopping. This car would have more space to bring home the groceries or haul goods to market. "Move over cousin. Grandma, Chester is hitting me!" Cadillac ruled the '50s luxury car market and occasionally several families would co-own a Cadillac sedan. A custom limousine was just the next level up. Many were coach built in El Paso, TX.
