i was screwing around in physics class the other day and found a couple of these bad boys under the sink and ive been going down a rabbit hole ever since, great video 10/10

Lovely counter. I'd like to get my hands on one of those.

Based on the reading, looks like it reached about 2-3 mR/hr. That's 0.002-0.003 Roentgen or about 20 microsieverts. You would probably have to eat those lantern mantles to do any harm to you.
@ThePapino1346 ай бұрын
ang youll oriobably get more harm from the toxicity than the radiation
@jublywubly3 ай бұрын
It's still pretty high, though. Normal background radiation, around here, is only 0.17 micro Sieverts.

Nice CD V-700 6A and demonstration! Those are rugged Geiger counters! I have the same model, and it's in mint condition! I have the CD V-705 University Sound speaker for it. They are quite pricy nowadays though, but they do take 2 D cells, so that makes the unit heavier and more bulky, but the sound is great, and it's adjustable! These units are also resistant to EMPs, with the steel casing!

Just about any vacuum tube based equipment is not subject to EMP damage because electrons will not flow through a vacuum unless the element heater is energized.

Those are good speakers. The newer ones have a volume control. A thing, not often mentioned about the CDV 700, is your distance from the radiation source. For your calibration you virtually have to touch the calibration spot. The length of the cord away, the machine may not pick up anything. The source here is so small. But if your wand (tube) is 3 to 4 feet off the ground, and maybe you are still 10 feet away from a strange object fallen from the sky into your back yard and you get readings from 10 feet away, STOP! Do not go closer. If you do your machine will probably just fall silent being completely overwhelmed. Anything that makes your CDV 700 Geiger counter react from 4 or more feet away is a) Hot, b) not good for you to be near, and c) about to put your CDV 700 to sleep for a period of time. I would say, unless you are self destructive, do not come back with a survey meter to try again. Instead report it and let folks who are paid to do so deal with it. :)

Excellent video! I have a ceramic orange sugarbowl which is "hot" due to the color and glaze used. The look on my students faces when I show the lantern mantles and sugarbowl is priceless. The lantern mantles provide a low cost option for a check source. For those interested in ham radio, there is an article in the ARRL QST magazine from April 2008 entitled "Repair and Upgrade Low Cost Geiger Counters" by Charles Kitchin N1TEV. In that article he describes building different amplifier circuits for hearing the clicks as well as an overview of the Victoreen CD V-700 Model 6B.

even if you maxed it out at 50 mr/hr or 0.5 mSv/hr it would do nearly no harm. it would have to be a long time of PROLONGED DIRECT contact for any harm to be done. 0.4 mSv is a mammogram and is worth 7 weeks of background radiation. remember your meter is in mrem per hour so your readings looked like 2.5 mr/hr which is equivalent to 25% of a chest x ray over 1 hour. also thorium doesn't emit beta radiation so you dont need the shield open. dont breath the fumes or carry one on you everyday and you'll be just fine.

Yes 🙌 now with my cd 715 survey meter that goes from .5r/hr to 500 r/hr. That is my meter that tells me when I need to scram!

Those thorium-treated gas lantern mantles are crumbling away into an easily inhaled dust. But as long as you keep that in mind, you should be all right.

Just bought a civil defense kit and put some batteries in mine. Needle goes up to .1 and stays around there even when touching the check source. I plugged in the headphones and it clicks but no reaction to the check
@highvoltagemayhem33454 жыл бұрын
So your problem could be one of these two things. Some models contained a a style of gauge with an elevated black ring around the edge that were notorious for failing. Sometimes these faulty gauges will read low or not even at all. If your Geiger counter is making a clicking sound when exposed to radiation then your machine is working internally but the gauge itself may not read accurately. Also most of the check sources on CD-V700's are mostly depleted by now so you wont be getting much of a reading anyways. If the gauge needle is not resting on 0 when the machine is turned off it can be adjusted with the small brass screw inside the gauge and that may help free up anything that might be causing the needle to stick at 0.1
@cjproductions19964 жыл бұрын
@@highvoltagemayhem3345 thanks for the response! Sorry for the poor explanation but the needle goes to zero when I turn the unit off. The needle does move slightly but not like yours does when you use the check source

I have the OCDM ITEM No. CDV-700. MODEL 6b, the only difference I can see is mine only takes 2 D batteries. Manufactured by Lionel Electronic Laboratories is this the same Lionel that made or makes toy trains?

It sounded as if the the beta penetrated the shield when it was first turned on. Is that correct?

You explain very well, I want to know what is the difference between Radiation detector and Radiation meter? What do you show only serves to detect things that have radiation? If you want to detect radiation in the environment or near a 5G antenna, is it good for me? I do not know much about this but I see some models that have a handle and do not have that metal cylinder with cable
@ForbiddTV3 жыл бұрын
These do not detect 5G (microwave) signals. The one without the probe on the handle (model CD V715) is for high level gamma radiation (deadly levels).

In honesty giger counts are for detection of contaminants on a source. The survey meter the 715 is a device where if the needle moves you move! With a giger counter nothing is really super dangerous that you can measure

I wouldn't worry about the lantern, its at about .035R/h which is about as powerful as an x-ray, just don't sleep with it every night or huff the lantern fumes and you'll be fine.
