Absolutely right about young people learning vintage stuff. I destroyed my first Grundig tube radio at the age of 14, way back in the seventies and I learned a lot. I had never touched a tube or a cap before. Today I repair mostly solid state stuff, but the thrill about tubes never goes away.

Webcor double decker idler wheels like this were noisy 50 years ago...especially on speed 78. Love the "magic mind" feature...we use to call it the "mental mind". Automatically changes to speed 45 when a 7" record was played...then back to 33 with a 12" record was played. Intermix a stack of records...and they slipped on top of each other not playing too well. Push down on the speed selector knob to start the turntable action. I had a compact console model similar to this without the AM radio. Loved it. Thanks for showing this rarity.

I sincerely hope that I can get my grandson warm for this and teach him everthing I know. So he inherits my tools, all of my collected radios and knowledge so it won't get lost (in other words end up in the garbage) and get saved for future generations. One can only hope right? That Webcor is from the 1957-60 period. My folks had one very similar, in '58 Blonde finish...same changer...ours was the "Revina" Had no radio...just a phono only Hi Fi. Not a bad performer for the time...that changer was reliable unit. It featured the so-called "Magic Mind" auto speed and indexing change...could intermix LP's and 45's...changer would do the rest.

Won't it also need a voltage dropping resistor? I've heard that a good selenium rectifier drops more than .7 V, so putting it in alone might slow-cook some of the more sensitive components.

I hear the station ident at 18:58 is KSUR’s “K-Surf”. That’s the only station that I can listen to, and it’s the home of “Disco Saturday Night”. I listened to it every Saturday at 10PM eastern, 7PM pacific and continued right up until 4AM. I was sleeping in bed while listening to non-stop retro dance music and I fell asleep. As I can hear, it’s the same ID that “Disco Saturday Night” ended at 4AM and it was still dark until the sun came up at around 7AM before breakfast.

Most people don't realize that the biggest limitation to AM audio fidelity is the receiver itself. Most people in my generation wouldn't be able to tell the difference between AM and FM on a good receiver in the absence of local noise sources. Give me a Carver TX-11A anyday and I can show you good sounding AM.

Most AM transmitters will proof out flat to 15 kilocycles. The sideband power level out at the high frequencies is too weak to overcome normal noise without serious impairment - that's why it is rolled of in the receiver IFs. If you ever been in a transmitter building and listen to the modulation monitor on good speakers, it'll blow your mind.

N Gauge England -Synthematix- - err.... when I listen to AM - MW, LW, whenever there is bass in the music it gets distorted/turned into a severe buzz, I have only listened to modern transistor radios, as this is an older valve/tube radio it doesn’t have that problem? @@samuelfellows6923 many older valved radiograms back from the pre-FM days can sound excellent on MW. @ 30:27 - If you put xylene (hard to find) or xylol (available at the paint store) on that roller it will no longer be petrified. Try swabbing some on the roller - let soak in 30 mins. If not good enough, you'll have to submerge roller in xylene. Be careful - remove every few minutes - it can turn to mush. The rubber will soak up the xylene - the edges will have a convex curve - don't worry - after the xylene soaks in it will come square. Just don't dunk in xylene 30 mins and come back - you may not have a roller. Some info for your bud there.

Really nice rig! I totally agree about giving the youngsters a chance to experiment, crash & burn...but most importantly: to Learn for themselves!

That Webcor is from 1957-8 era. Their trademark spelling for "Phonograph" was "Fonograf"...which actually makes that spelling more logical! We had the "Rivina", which was similar, a bit larger cabinet, no radio...same changer...was a good little HI FI. On the later Webcors of 1959-60, one could add a "drop-in" AM/FM tuner, with the separate stages for similcast...before the advent of multiplex.

As someone that's into record player consoles, I thought this was awesome. You're correct when you say that any modern ceramic cartridge will work (I'd recommend a Phanstiehl P228). The original is crystal, which is why it has lower volume output when using ceramic...however, many amps had a resistor to knock down the voltage of the crystal cart, and so that resistor can either be changed or eliminated altogether

I had the same turntable . the idler wheel had to be rebuilt due to rock hard rubber like this example... also, make sure the record changer is super clean, especially the parts on that big gear under the turntable otherwise the record will start to skip as it gets near the end of the record
