1960s GE Research Lab Changes

In the late 60s the optimism that the country had changed and companies like General Electric stopped funding "freewheeling science" and became more directed and results-driven. This excerpt includes the development of artificial diamonds by GE which occurred at the same time. Many researchers at the time were unhappy with being reigned in by budgets and managers.

In the early 1970's my high school chemistry teacher, Sister Clarence, took us on field trips to the GE R&D centers in Niskayuna and Waterford (among other places). The scientists there talked to us about various projects, including the making of diamonds. It was fascinating and inspiring! Sister Clarence was an incredible teacher - she didn't just teach us chemistry, she taught us to love science!
