This is one of my favorites of the full size Fords of the 60s. My favorite is definitely the 63 1/2 Galaxie 427 even though the 1965-67 427 Side Oiler was a better designed engine than the 1963-64 427 Top Oiler was. But I love all the 427 Ford's whether theyre a Top Oiler or a Side Oiler design

The Tri Power set up was a cool thing to have back then ..The Header type exhaust manifolds were also used on police cars
@walnutmanor2 жыл бұрын
The term tri-power originated from the Pontiac from 57. Ford called it 6V, as in 6 venturi. Most people use the term tri-power for anything in the 50s or 60s with 3 2 barrel carbs. Real nice Starliner..

Hello Jeff, my family had several 390 powered Fords and Mercurys and they had a ton of torque and were bullet proof . I personally tested them all ! There is so much that can be done with those FE blocks , 406 and 427 combos , there isn't a better sound in the world than a full house FE at full song . I can attest to that because I was there . As always take care my friend and have a great week.

There is definitely a lot of potential there. I've seen some mean FE's over the years. Thanks for watching my friend, I hope you have a great week too!

That front end appears aerodynamic, much like the Talladega which came out much later. I love the look all the way around, especially the roofline and tail lights.

As indicated, the 3x2 version was rated at 401 horsepower. The '61 HP 390 4v high compression engine was officially rated at 375 horsepower.
@et760393 жыл бұрын
@GEO Mason , thanks for the education; found a source that corroborated your remark. Seems there wasn't a separate code for the 401 horsepower engine in 1961, although for the 1962 T-Bird, this engine had an M code. On the other hand, I have twice seen an apparent OEM 3x2 small block intake being offered for sale. Not being aware of this being a stock option, so perhaps this was OTC or dealer-installed option?

Had a new 62 Ford galaxies with 390 and 4 speed, man I loved that car but wanted the 406 with tri power but let the salesman talk me out of it, said it would not be practical driving it every day, so regretted it, but improved on it a lot in the next 4 or 5 years and even turned it into a drag car.
@steves46394 жыл бұрын
Starliners are the best. The XL that came out in '62 had a much nicer trimmed interior, but nothing beats the style of a Starliner. with the 390 tripower this one is a real rocknrolla. Also, this Liner proves that there is nothing that can't be improved with a set of Torq Thrusts.
@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 Жыл бұрын
Starliners are indeed beautiful cars. In 1962, Ford made 5 "Starlift Convertibles", which was a Sunliner with a so-called attachable [sic] Starliner top/backlite assembly. A secure attachment couldn't be engineered so the idea was scrapped. As for those dreadful, juvenile ghetto wheels, they belong down with the Andrea Doria. No self-respecting Ford purist would ever run that trash on his car... EVER! That rubbish is strictly for low-riders, Mondos, drug dealers, retards and old folks who need something fancy to coil their garden hose around after they've watered their lawn.

Converted to a 4-speed, it wasn't available till late '62. Standard 390 converted to 3-2 bbls would likely be around 340 hp but if it had been the 375 hp version it would've been 401 hp.
@darrellepickering8433 Жыл бұрын
The M code 390 could be ordered in '63, not sure of '62, on standard size Fords. Local guy ordered a '63 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible with that engine & a 4-speed, black top, red interior & body. He kept it for a very long time & the only 1 I've ever seen with that combo. Saw several 406s & 427s tho.
@mjbachman3027 Жыл бұрын
The 4 speed did become available late in the 1961 model year run.

The tri power was the factory biggest option for this car. I think the hp was 400 with tri power.
@deansamford83165 жыл бұрын
I had a 61 Fairlane with the 401 hp 3 speed with overdrive. A high tourqe motor that the local drag strip created a new class called optional superstock. At the time no Chevy could keep up. It was the first production car with factory headers. Ford made 2000 of these so they could qualify as production to run Nascar stock class.

Mid year, they started offering the four-speed as a factory option. Since few people knew about it at the time, only about 100 to 120 were built with the four-speed.

I thought tri power meant auto
@mescko3 жыл бұрын
It refers to the carburetion--three two barrel carbs, hence TRI-power. The tri-power was a factory option, but I don't think the four-speed was until '62. These had to be special-ordered, normally for drag racing duty. The tri-power 390 was rated at 401 bhp.
@petervossos48163 жыл бұрын
@@mescko 👍 Thanks for that!!!! Never thought Ford ever used 3 carbies !!! Knew about Hemi and GM!!! Ozy cars never had multiple carb set up!!!! Believe it or not they sold air cleaners like that here with a bottom plate to fit only one carbie !!!! I bought one and fit it to my cleaveland !!!!!! More for show!!!! That’s why when l looked at the 390 in the gal l completely ignored to look under the hat!!!!! America had heaps better stuff than us!!!!!
@craigburton82056 жыл бұрын
outlawed by NASCAR too aerodynamic😥
@mescko3 жыл бұрын
that was the 'starlift' top in '62. It was outlawed because it was not a regular factory option, as the rear glass was not shaped for the roof and wouldn't even roll up.
