In this second and final video, we will clean the tweed cabinet, inside and out, create and cover an upper rear panel, cover the speaker baffle, have a preliminary audio check, replace the original reverb driver transformer, tune up the speaker and circuit, and then listen to a final audio check.
Extra features include the opening of another gift box from a generous viewer.....after plenty of sniffing by my furry assistants.....and a very unusual closing: A photo montage (including a bunch of my wife's paintings) with an original backing track entitled "Uncle Doug" by a Swiss band named Portable Negation. Here is a link to their website: portablenegati...

@Kenny H Solid state amplifiers do not use output transformers at all. There used to be an exception, but it's only found in old PA installations (old cathedrals for example). The only considerations regarding heat and stress will be for the power supply (transformer or SMPS) and the output stage of the amp. The "stress" will be directly proportional to the output power delivered. The most important thing is to never connect speakers wired in such a way, that the impedance would be lower than the minimum allowed, 4Ω in your case. Tube amp will be more forgiving in such a case, and would just start distorting sound a lot, perhaps in an interesting way, whereas a solid state one will either start hard-clipping the sound, which sounds awful, or fail - depending on how well designed the protection circuitry is.

I love the way the reverb turned out. Glorious. I don't hear the problem with the speaker you are talking about on the video, but perhaps if I was with the amp in the room I would. I was amazed that those old tubes were so strong. Very cool. ..Congratulations on having a song named after you! How cool is it that making videos about what inspires you, inspires others to create in response. Auntie Doug's painting of Jack was particularly fun to see. You better be careful... people maybe sending her money for paintings soon.

It is a very rare moment in life to be a witness to perfection. I sense it in this video in many aspects. The sensitive paintings made by your wife, the amazing photographs of the land where you live, the restoration on cool old hot rods, Rusty with a gleam in his eyes, your crafted restoration of amplifiers such as this Maestro......I am in awe of the art and kindness you graciously present to all of us. @Kenny H Just my opinion here, but it depends if you're looking for a modern equivalent, or a vintage speaker. The old speakers are far less efficient, and won't be as loud decibel wise as a modern one typically. The modern offerings from Weber are great speakers, and pretty efficient (ie- louder per watt). I have a Weber 12A125 that was in my 5E3 (tweed deluxe) clone, and it really sounds the part with speaker breakup. Rift Amps makes a modern deluxe and uses a Warehouse Guitar Speakers G12Q. The G12Q is a little less efficient than the others they offer, so you'd probably get more saturation with less volume. I plan to try out the G12Q because I don't gig, and don't need that volume. My 5E3 is stupid loud with the altec that's in it. The Altec a fantastic speaker, but it's very efficient and will push 110db on my cheap meter. My personal experience buying vintage alnico 12" speakers is it can be hit or miss. Early Jensen's, CTS, and Rola are usually safe. Lots of them are in good condition, and are pulls from old organs. Their typical low cost means low-ish risk, but it also means you're tempted to try more and wind up with a stack of speakers that you're not using :). I use this extensively when understanding who makes the typically unlabeled speakers. The rim will have something like 220415. 220 is Jensen, 415 would be 15th week of 1964 (or possibly '54). With alnico's that can be a tough one to really know. Ceramic magnet speakers it'll be the 60s as far as I know. www.triodeel.com/eiacode.htm

I was kinda wonderin' about that reverb. That new transformer sure did the trick...the impedance of the old transformer probably didn't match the new tank. And I've seen that tweed and all it's stains in two videos now...and it's kinda growing on me. And stiffening up the speaker suspension worked like a champ...as did the montage set to music at the end. I hope you let your wife know that we appreciate her artistic talents. Sure do miss Rusty. Kudos to Jack for baring up under the extra workload, and training KC to be his assistant. Great video pair, and heroic efforts to revived that amp.

You have a great channel! I have commented on your Kustom amp head + speaker cabinet video, but didn't come out and say that first. I finally subscribed. I love listening to your videos, even if I'm not able to watch them. The way you explain what you're doing when you do a diagnosis and repair, it makes sense to me even if I can only listen (but not watch) but if I can watch, all the better because you show things clearly. I love amp technology but I don't know how to work on it, so thanks for sharing so much of what you know and do. Today I just bought a solid-state Fender guitar amp - I never thought I would buy a solid state amp. I've played through tube amps for years, and have a Carvin X60 and a Silvertone 5 watt from 1965. But the Fender Mustang series really hits the spot for me. But I still love tube technology and I'm glad that so many people are keeping it alive.

This has been an eye opener in more than one way. Gibson amps never made it across the big pond, while Fenders are everywhere, (I have two). Don't understood why. This one sounds great. (Even with the flub it had a fine bluesy vibe). Secondly, I spent most of the 70s in art colleges as a painter, and nobody with that kind of training has a good word to say about the work of any living artist, (rival). Auntie Doug's paintings are seriously good. ('Smply divine' is the technical term). Offered the choice, you keep the amp, and I take a painting. Keep it up, gentlefolks, the world is a better place for having you.

Very nice photo montage! The "breadboard" amplifier looks like a DIY build from a Thordarson manual; their transformer catalogs had plans and diagrams of how to build your own amplifiers and transmitters and so forth. And all the photos and paintings of flowering desert plants and cacti reminded me of an old family story: my dad grew up during the Depression as the son of poor Greek immigrants, and niceties such as soft toilet paper were an unaffordable luxury. As children, my dad and his four brothers all did odd jobs and were always on the lookout for any salvageable or scavengable or resellable/ reusable items and materials with which to help the family survive. Somebody noticed these odd-looking fruits wrapped in thin tissue paper that were being set up on a fruit and vegetable display stand, and the tissue paper was being thrown away, so they brought some home to use as toilet paper. Unfortunately, those "fruits" turned out to be from prickly pear cacti......
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 5 жыл бұрын
Oh my Lord, GU, having fallen into a huge prickly pear cactus when on a Boy Scout hike, I can attest to the horrors of having the tiny bristles in places "where the sun doesn't shine". I love the breadboard amp and would like to build one, but I have long since sold or given away almost all of my stash of very early electronic parts. Now that I've seen the photo again, it whets my appetite for a try at building it anyway.

Another brilliant X2 presentation Doug.. Makes me think I should have been born & bought up in the States.. You tick all the boxes with every video you put up here ... Along with the ever entertaining felines, the cars and the motorcycles, which of course I recognise very well being a "Limey" 👴🏼... Your wife's vibrant art also hits the spot and thank her for letting us all see it. Great photo's of Rusty who is still missed and remembered. May you long continue making these marvellous, entertaining and educational presentations.. ✔️

Chalk another up for Car Guy's. That stuff works man. Used some on another JCM yesterday, panels, tolex, knobs and all. Nasty, nasty stuff comes off. Tar, nicotine. Who knows what else. After giggling at the natures colon toothbrush I was saddened to see good old Rusty as we all were so used to him being around as he was the main star (apart from your finger uncle Doug) I lost my only companion just recently and my workshop feels so empty now. She would ignore me at times and turn her head and race off so I would do the same but she would come over and tap me with her paw and slightly poke me with her nails until I would take notice and pat her and tell her she's my girl Her reaction to this was amazing she would drool and purr like crazy and understood my commands Damn I miss my kitty so much

Poly finishing tweed is really the only way to do it. Shellac and lacquer can be applied but only with a spray setup and it uses a LOT of product due to the watery consistency. The polyurethane is also far more durable and wont chip off years later leaving splotches and stains like the original tweed on the GA2RT. Nice amp Uncle Doug, I wish people would just send me neat stuff like that! Give the kitties some good ear scratches for me. I sure do miss old Rusty, he was always there to help out and be the comedy relief in your videos. I’m sure he was also a very good friend and beloved family member.
