What a beautiful example in "Garnet Mist" metallic. That was quite a popular color in 1961. The Dynamic 88 models were the lowest-priced 1961 full-size Oldsmobiles. Seven different models in four body styles were available. They cost only a few hundred dollars more than a comparably equipped Chevrolet Impala. Underneath that gorgeous sheetmetal, they shared the "Fisher Body" structure with Chevrolet (GM's B-Body). It was slightly trimmer for '61, shaving off a couple of inches in length and width and a few pounds of dry weight. The chassis was unique to Oldsmobile. A full perimeter frame and 4-link rear axle with coil springs were new this year, replacing the massive X-braced "cowbelly" frame with leaf spring rear suspension that the enormous 1960 models rode on. This particular model cost $ 3,034 from the factory, and weighed a little over 4,000 pounds without options. Popular options like power steering, power brakes and automatic transmission usually pushed the price to $3,500 and the weight towards 4,500 pounds. Of this 4-door hardtop, just over 51,000 were made. It is unlikely that many have survived, especially in such a nice original condition as this example. The lesser trim models tended to get used up and discarded more frequently than the higher-priced premium models.

beautiful. the whole '61 GM line was spectacular. if our European friends can believe it, the '61's were actually much more restrained in size and style than the previous 4 years.

That was due to Bill Mitchell taking the reins of styling, as Harley Earl had retired. Bill liked nice and uncluttered lines as opposed to the over the top, chrome laden barges of several years before. Tailfins were also on the wane…….most GM ‘61’s still had ‘em, but they were nowhere near as flamboyant as before.

The 1961 Oldsmobiles have always fascinated me. We got a ride home from church once, in a '61 Classic Ninety-Eight six window sedan, in baby blue. Mom couldn't find the inside door handle. :D This happened in 1962.

It's interesting that they were able to stamp both the front and the rear fenders without resorting to unattractive end caps. Fun fact about the 1961 Olds: The public did not like the pointed rear fenders and it negatively affected sales. I read in a car magazine 60 years ago that it was the first time GM had ever seriously considered a mid-year styling change on any model. As a consequence the 1962s were substantially restyled towards the rear.

Beautiful car! There is a 62 Olds 4 door Survivor in the Joliet Illinois area same color with 3500 miles on it. Still riding on its original tires. I thought this was that car until I saw the interior. It is gorgeous as well.

Sad story... A local salvage yard crushed one just like this. I was able to grab the grill and some emblems to hang on my wall. Just made me sick. I'm in the process of restoring a 65 Oldsmobile Jetstar convertible.

I have a 62 Starfire convertible. I've owned it since 1976. Other than replacing the top I've had to do nothing to the exterior or interior. I did take the original transmission out and stored it. The car currently runs a Art Carr 200 4R. This enables better highway performance and much better fuel economy.
