The Star is one of the oldest one-design class sail boat. There are World Championship competitions for the best skippers. This recording was made on 16 mm film in 1961 and recently digitized to video. Thanks goes to the help of the racers and the race committee who made the film possible. .Lowell North and Bill Buchan are shown dueling for top honors. So glad I was able to participate in the Star Class for about 10 years in So Cal. Finnished up the last few years hanging over the side with my kids on the stick, who are all great great sailors because of all of it.

Love this! My dad was a huge Star sailor. Rocco Campanelli was his name. Just passed this February at the age of 90. A sailor till the end.

Never sailed a star, but I built a model of one from a Dumas kit when I was a teenager. I've sailed Hobie Cats and Flying Scots.

When I was young my brother and I had Clear Sky # 1888. These boats are the best of the best.

Varnished deck & cockpit, robin's egg blue topsides, transom & bottom, white boot top, white leading edges on keel & rudder (or maybe just white below waterline) = BEAUTY !!

I grew up at San Diego yacht club sailing Sabots, Stars, Solings, and eventually offshore with my dad who campaigned out of SDYC for 25 years … That old gray crane you see in this video at 3:20?… I put boats in the water with that probably 100 times in the 70’s .. thanks for posting this. A lot of the people in this video I knew when I was a child, and this brings back a lot of memories.

That right! We didn't need tiller extensions either! And most of us didn't get sunglasses or hats. Just the clothes we showed up in. Same ones the whole regatta.
