1961 VW Beetle (65 Pan) - Front Seat, Fuel Sender, Fuel Breather - 125

This is the 125th video on the 1961 VW Beetle with 65 pan. In this video I install the passenger front seat with a new seat cover, replace a leaking fuel sender and replace the hard line breather with a 3mm braided hose.

Love your videos I’m always impressed by people that are brave enough to film there work and put it out there. I got into Vw beetles a few years ago. I know own 3 and have many many many hours of watching videos and reading books under my belt. Can I point out from what I’ve read the fuel breather cable you installed was actually the correct length there was no need to cut it. It needs to be clipped in to the 2 plastic cream coloured clips on the inner wing and then fed through the exit hole. Only the Vw engineers know why they did it that way.

Yes! I need those clips - I now remember breaking them when removing them prior to the body work…. One place wanted like $16 per clip

Thanks! Looks like I should have gotten clips and left that breather hose long time run up along the body and then back down into that hole, but I didn’t know!

Thanks - I had to do a bit of creative wiring at the base of the passenger seat back - almost like 5 steel wire sutures that act like hog rings. The pointy metal things were not working with the new covers. But I think it should work well.

@@LarsonSplitBus- that's the thing..we have to constantly improvise with these old bugs..everything is a challenge..good for the old grey matter though.your bugs looking better all the time

Can you say where you got the new sending unit from.or a link please I seen one on eBay but it's plastic thanks

You installed the fuel tank breather line incorrectly. The two clips on the left side of the trunk near the fuel filler are the retainers for the breather line. It should run from the filler neck, towards the rear of the car about 15 inches, bend 180 degrees and run back towards the front of the car to the hole in the trunk floor.

Thanks - yeah I trimmed that line too short and didn’t have the clips. I wish I had a do over ;)
