Removing the Engine and Transmission in my 1962 Triumph TR4 with my buddy Elin Yakov from the Rusty Beauties Shop. This is in real time...lets see how long it takes us!

Great team work. It took me two weeks to finish watching.

Brought back Soooooo many memories of pulling a TR4A engine. Along with leaving the front wheels on the ground and jacking up the back, I always remove the trans shift linkage and bolt on a cardboard cover. Gives you more clearance for the trans.

When my brother was a young man, he bought a TR4 that had a cave in the left side of the engine that the bats flew in and out of. He also found a junkyard that had a TR4 rusting into the ground . He bought the engine and transmission and asked me to install them. We pulled the transmission out from inside the car and then pulled the engine using a come-along attached to the beam in the garage ceiling. This was years ago when my brother was still alive and healthy, He would have enjoyed watching this as it would have reminded him of that time we worked on his first car together. I mocked him and his old rust bucket TR4, but I was secretly jealous of it.

Great team work, as always you do work together well. I too was calling for you to change the angle on the hoist. I believe it would have given youthe 1/2 "or so to move the engine around. In the end you happily got it. Great job.

Great stuff! Remember when i am doing this single … cost me a lot of time. More of that please 😀. And at Elin, A-Post / B-Post … funny. Had the same issue… send you pictures of my way to fix it. Thank you guys! Greetings from Germany Uwe

Wow, well done guys! Dave, you probably know that I was watching every move, I am surprised you did not hear me telling you to change the angle of the hoist leveler. It must be nice to have Elin as a "helper", especially when he is providing the heated garage and tools. He also can get to areas where you might be somewhat "challenged". I am trying to figure out why Elin removed all of the stuff from the interior and did not take down the soft top for better access. I watched the video last night, and did fast forward through the other 11 hours of sometimes different camera angles with poor sound, but mostly darkness.

Hi Jim, really nice to have Elin helping…just the company alone is nice, and you are right…he zips under the car pretty quickly and works better in the tight confines of the interior with those little hands …I think we make a pretty good team. We thought about taking the top down but we were really concerned about getting it back up…even though the garage is “heated” it’s still quite cool…the top fits very snugly and can be difficult to get back up even when it is warm and the suns been shining on it all day…we knew that it needed to go back outside so we thought best to leave it up. Yeah, something happened with the rendering and it created a 14 hour long video 😉 Thanks for watching.

I was thinking it was because of the cold. I learned my lesson about Triumph soft tops and cold weather many years ago, both small panel plastic windows cracked when trying to raise the top in cold weather. When I was fast forwarding through last night through the dark parts, I was waiting for the "brought to you by Lucas, the prince of darkness" as some people used to call it. Time to watch the TR3 Rusty Beauties show.@@cheftush

It is a lot easier if one leaves the front tires on the ground and puts the rear of the car up in the air on jackstands.
@cheftush
@cheftush 6 ай бұрын
Hi Mike, the front of the car had to be on jackstands in order for us to get the legs of the engine hoist under..plus with the tires on and the car on the ground, we wouldn’t be able to swing the lift almost 90 degrees as we did once we pulled the engine forward…we don’t have a lot of space in the garage….
@timmarsh6754

Intrigued as to why you removed the front wheels? Weight on the frame uprights bending them outwards? I’ve always removed TR6 engines with the front down on the wheels, to make clearing the grille easier. Great video though. Thank you.
@cheftush
@cheftush 6 ай бұрын
Hi Tim, a couple reasons actually….with this particular hoist, it will actually foul on the radiator shield and the frame if the car is on the ground. We removed the wheels as you may have noticed, we didn’t have a lot of room in front of the car to pull the engine out forwards…so, we had to pivot the hoist almost 90 degrees in order to get the engine out and then onto the floor of the garage.

@@cheftush, Mid-Ohio Sportcar Course has their vintage weekend starting the Friday after TRA. I'm working with them to try to get special pricing and a car coral for TRA members. You should put that weekend on your agenda if possible. It's a fun add-on.

I would paint the engine bay, but not to to a particularly high standard. Mechanically clean and rust convert, with any weld repairs as necessary, anti-rust primer these parts, then scuff areas where the paint is basically sound and use aerosol body colour. Please do not paint the engine bay black !
@cheftush
@cheftush 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input Robin. If it’s painted, it will definitely be body colour. Yes, it would be a quick and dirty aerosol spray and clear coat if I decide to do it.
