1963 Ford 300 427 4-Speed 4 Door Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode 309
We normally don’t associate high-performance 1960s cars with having 4 doors, but we also don’t see many 1960s 4-door sedans powered by high-compression, dual-quad fed 427s with 4-speed hanging on them from the factory! Well this is just such a machine.
And we have to correct ourselves already… we called this one a “Custom 300” in the intro, but in fact, Ford’s low-price entry in the full size field was just named the 300 for 1963, a name used for a single year model, even though low-price full size Fords had been around for decades.
The 300 shared the chassis, suspension, drivetrains, and other basic structural elements with the flashier Galaxie and Galaxie 500, but it was far more bare-bones, without fancy trim or other luxury items. Most were straight six or small V8 powered with manuals on the column. 300s were slab-sided sleds sold in several solid skins set off by 3 selections of seat stain. Some suggest it’s short on style, but we think simple is solid when it’s served with serious steam.
300s were also used largely in fleet vehicle trim, ranging from taxicabs to police cars. Interestingly, Ford had several levels of Police Car trim offerings in ‘63, ranging from the 138 HP six-cylinder Deputy model designed for “General Purpose” police work, the Police Sentinel, with it’s small block 260 V8 making 164 HP of law enforcement power, the 352 powered Guardian, for “all around” police work, up to the 330-hp 390 powered Interceptor versions, far more capable of chasing down bad guys on their way out of Mayberry.
But our 300 is even more than that, although we really don’t know if it ever served in a municipal capacity. The black and blue color scheme sure looks official. 300s could be ordered with any of the Ford V8s, including the 425 HP 427, no matter how many doors it had. We’re not exactly sure how many of these were built, but it’s not many.
Inside, this 4-door 300 is as bare as they come, with giant flat bench seats, crank-up windows, minimal trim, and very few amenities. This one sports an AM radio and a heater, but perhaps the most important feature is the 4-speed shifter in front of the bench seat.
Outside, the only indicator of this beasts potential is the little 427 badge on the fender, which almost seems like a gag when you look at this basic 4 door box. But opening the hood is no laughing matter, as you are stared-down by a high-strung big block Ford FE engine breathing through dual 4 barrels atop a mid-rise aluminum intake, high-flow heads, a solid lifter cam, and snarling through header-like cast iron exhaust manifolds. This one has a few chrome touches beyond the valve covers, like the radiator expansion tank and the fan shroud, but nothing looks upgraded from stock. Manual brakes and steering add to the experience of keeping this flying brick on course.
It does have heavy duty suspension and oversized drum brakes behind 14” stamped steel wheels wearing conservative hubcaps. The rear axle is a tough 9” unit managed by heavy leaf springs and shock absorbers, but a canon-carver she ain’t. But that park bench seat discourages high-speed turning maneuvers, no matter how hard you white knuckle the steering wheel. But this one shines in a straight line, and no doubt ranks as one of the top sleepers in The Brothers Collection.

My dad was an RCMP officer in 1967, junior constable. The worn out ready to retire on the detachment fleet was a 2 door 63 300, with a 260, 3 on the tree you could beat in a foot race. Members sometimes showed up early to get ahold of the grey on black, 2 door 4 speed big block Custom.

@@cali2468 Yeah right LS6 Won't even come close when comparing it to the FORD 427. Especially in that Almost 4,000 lbs. Chevelle. I'm Born and Raised in a FORD Family. I would take the Buick GS 455 Stage 1 Now that was a Beautiful Car with insane Low End Torque, the infamous HEMI Killer. IMO the Street Hemi wasn't All That, Very Overrated. Like i said Big Time FORD Guy, but i Always Loved the 69-72 Novas, and the 70-72 Buicks with the 455 Torque Monster. Hands Down the Best 455 Engine GM ever produced. Pontiac NO, Oldsmobile NO, Buick 455 YES !!! Rated at 360 HP and 510 Ft.Lbs. The Stage 1 Was a Beast. If i were to ever own a 69-72 Nova, First thing is to Repower it with a 429-460 BBF. If i were to own a Buick GS or Skylark, would probably keep the Buick Powerplant. Don't know, something about that Beautiful Car and that insane Torque Down Low, will definitely get that Heavy Weight Buick out of the Hole, Very Quickly. Way quicker than any 454 LS6. The Stage 1 455 was rated at 360 HP, Shit the 1971 BOSS 351 Mustang was rated at 330 HP, and i know for a Fact that it made Well Over 400 HP. Pretty Damn Sure the Buick Over 400 HP too. But it's that Crazy Torque that gets it up and Hauling Ass !!!

@@badass6.0powerstroke10 Blah blah and after all that garbage spewed, go look at 1/4 mile for this car and compare it to an LS6 Chevelle. The 427 powered 300 was barely in the 13s and trapped 100 mph. The almighty LS6 Chevelle was a bottom 13 second car and trapped 107-108 mph regularly. 100% bone-stock. The 70 Chevelle with the RPO Z15 option LS6 454 was no pretender, but it would outrun pretty much every car on the road in it's day; even the Hemi. These aren't assumptions these are FACTS!

The 300 was Ford's fleet car primarily, for taxis and law enforcement, although some frugal private citizens would buy them to save a few bucks. The frames of the 300s were of a lighter gauge, hence cheaper, which helped reduce their cost. Fun fact: the Lightweight Galaxies utilized the 300's weaker frame. Startling when you consider the horsepower and twisting of the chassis associated with the high speed clutch dumps and shifts happening with the LWGs. The lightweight frames continued through the 1968 year with the Custom and Custom 500 models, also full sized price and equipment step downs from the Galaxie line.

Kevin that car is amazing. Seen a lot of 390 ones. But this one is something Jay Leno would of bought. The brothers collection is by far superb 👍👍

That engine and bay with just the black and chrome looks Darth Vaderish, purely monochromatic, completely bad ass. The black on the rest of the body seems an extension of the engine bay background,a curtain of darkness that lends it a depth akin to a black hole. Stellar. Thanks again guys! ▪☆☆☆▪

Didn't this compete with the Bel Air 409 back then? It just as much claims sleeper status as the Ford 300 427. This is freakin nice.

Yes & do not forget an often over. Big block Ford,- Any Ford afficianado knows (hopefully) of the ORIGINAL crossbolted PRE-427. THE406. THE ORIGINAL was a top ouler. as was the 428 police interceptor first & foremost was a 390 based top oiller block with a 428 stro,ke. It too tendedcto blow it's rods. Out the blocks thrust surfaces. The final 406 was, essentially, the cross bolted 427 hi river W/ dual Hollis with dual pumper accelerator options. Then came the claim to fame Hemi assassin's. And, yes, the Hemi WAS humbled. Look it up!!! And that was B4 the original 392 hemis. Google Ed Pink engines Look up Norms toy. And it was not a Mr. Norms dodgee.. Nice chatting with you all, Brian.

@@falconater68 I wasn't discussing the 58 powerplant If the words were lost I intoned the years after the original 390 (59) up to the 61 hipo 390 The first true big Ford . After being out endured By lean air at Pikes peak the stage was set for 3 separate Ford's. These were the early 406 & the 428 police interceptor. Only then came the 427s. The ultimate version, the S.O.H.C., debuted in mid 1963. Ed Pink used a camper Nick named 'Norm's toy in honor of It's designer Mr. Norm Faustin. A 409 was a turtle compared to this. Very few Z-11’s were built but theoretically someone could have.

Absolutely. Probably a bootlegger. Most of the police versions had the 390 I believe but it definitely is possible that it's a revenuer's car. I know the FBI ordered two 4 door Dodge Coronet's with the 426 Hemi in 1966

My neighbor was the Sheriff in my small version of Mayberry. He was also our Little League coach so we got to ride with him a bit. In 1965 it was time for his old car to be retired. He got a Chevy Biscayne 4-dr with a 427 engine. If memory serves me, it had a radio and heater option and must have had the 4-speed trans. That was it for options. I remember that it was VERY fast, and he said that no one on the road could outrun HIS car!

@Squirmin Herman the one eyed German I thought that, but wasn't sure. Then it must have had the 4-speed. We always rode in the back, so don't remember how he shifted, but do remember the awesome 427 nailing us to the back of the seat.... :)

in '67 my dad had a '67 Biscayne 2dr with a 427, 4spd, 3.91 posi, heavy duty suspension, no power brakes, no power steering, no radio, gold over gold interior. It was fast out of the box and never lost a race in our small town. It was his daily driver until 1969 when he traded it in for a 69 camaro ss 396 375 hp. That camaro was never as fast or as cool as the old Biscayne.

A similarly equipped white Chevy tooled Eastern Kentucky, special ordered as a company car for a traveling Ashland Oil (?) company sales rep. No worries as the company bought the gas. I believe the company bought the car and he paid for any optional equipment. This might have been a competing sales rep’s car. Or as you said a rum runner. I saw a black 65 2 door “7 litre” strippo that had been a Kentucky ABC car. Pushing down on the bumper was like pushing down on concrete. From the looks of the front sway bar this did not have the heavy duty suspension. Also since this has been frame off “restored” (with too much gloss in spots) it could be a “what if” car.
