I'm the third caretaker of this 1963 Mercedes Benz 220SE, chassis W111, Heckflosse, that has traveled 450,000 miles. The first caretaker was from 1963 till his death in 2017. The second was from 2017 till 2019. I acquired the car in 2019. From the day the original owner drove it out of the Pacific Grove, CA dealership to my acquisition, all receipts for every repair and maintenance have been kept. There are three full-service books, owner's manual, shop manual, and parts manual. This video takes the viewer on a pleasant drive around southern Augusta and northern Rockbridge counties of the Shenandoah valley of Virginia.

This was built when Mercedes knew how to build cars.... today.... that isn't the case.... they look like every other car on the road.... gone is that big beautiful grill, Gone is that magnificently produced body which was actually leaded (seams ) sealed with real lead... Care and love of craftsmanship of a gone by era.... Take care of this old girl as she deserves it....

We have a 1964 Mercedes 220S with the W111 chassis. We purchased it for about $ 500.00 and spent about $ 12000.00 restoring it. Beautiful car and they hold up well in Southern California. Ours has a 4 speed manual shift on the column with a M180 engine with the two Zenith 35/40 INAT carburetors. We have learned a lot from several of the Forums . Color is white and red vinyl interior. We plan to keep it in our family. Thank you for sharing your beautiful vehicle !

Hi from Australia, I live 125 kilometres north of Sydney in one of the original farming zones from the early convict days, the scenery is almost mirror image. I own six classic cars now, having trimmed from ten. This is where this type of car comes into its own. I have another even "more" rural property some 700miles slightly northwest also in New South Wales on the western slopes of the New England plateau. Called the Liverpool Plains an area the size of Belgium or the Netherlands that grows 90% of Australia's grain crops & runs sheep on every second year on the richest black volcanic soils in the whole of Australia. Beautiful country like yours I never get tired of the drive up to the house & land there as it is uplifting. Thank you for the videos I have watched the drive in your "green machine" the '72 280SE 4.5. We never received these here, only the 3.5 280SE versions & sadly a lot went to the grave with warped heads from cylinder head gasket failures, as the "old boys" that owned them would not use distilled water & inhibitor in the cooling system. Instead, they stupidly just used garden hoses, and NSW government put fluoride in our water supply in 1967 to halt tooth decay and that just KILLS right fast any alloy engine water jacket & head gaskets, a sad end to lovely cars. One of my cars is a large '67 Jaguar mkX or 420G as the BMC-Leyland merger renamed them, it fortunately has a high output bronze head eliminating alloy head gasket failures and gives it 300 hp instead of normal 260 hp . Happy Motoring friend & keep these lovely video's coming.

You are too kind in your comments. Thank you very much. Did not know that fluoride in water could damage engines. I do use distilled water mixed 50/50 with antifreeze. Our drinking water is from one of our 6 springs so no fluoride there. However, it is rich with calcium, so we use a filter. I've never been to Australia. It is comments like yours that encourage me to make more videos.

@@kensshowtell Hi , again Ken from Australia. When I first bought my old stone house up at Spring Ridge it had just bore water with a high calcium and mineral content. I had taken 3 months long service leave from work and had been working like a Trojan on the house. It was built of solid stone in the late 1800's massive thick walls, massive pitch om the corrugated steel roof. It is miles from the road so no electric power, just candlelight until I fitted my own power grid of solar panels on my huge ne aluminum, concreted floor garage capable of holding 20 6 mtr/20-foot cars, with a partial mezzanine floor. I went to the pub for a meal and a beer one night & the locals were talking about a guy I had made friends with up there as he had kidney stones from the minerals in the water and had collapsed & taken by ambulance to Tamworth base hospital to get sorted. One of the cars I own is a Ford Aust' built right hand drive 1979 Collectors series Lincoln Town Car. Sent here as a CKD kit car (completely knocked down). as needed to be RHD to be road legal. Also it has a proper genuine solid walnut dash made by one of Australia's premier furniture makers as the asymmetrical LHD fake plastic wood dash would never become a RHD version, additionally instead of the awful tacky plastic dash panel unit is in cast alloy anodized in the color of the cars' interior giving the car a virtual Rolls Royce caliber interior. Fitted with beautiful, anodized alloy wheels with body color between the spokes. After just a few washes with either the bore, or local water from dam with a calcium content, I could see some lacquer damage on the wheels. So next I had 4 enormous 25,000 litre "plastic" water tanks delivered, a filtering unit and piping to suit, finally the21st century arrived. I still have to use an almost marine satellite phone as there is no local phone connection, too remote. So now I have no water worries. Ken the fluoride will kill a new cars engine if put into it within 3 to 5 years !! A really fast destruction to an engine & at the 5 years mark a lot of value has fallen away from a car, so a total engine replacement with a new one may see it as a junkyard car. Regards Greg

@@gregharvie3896 Wow! your life has been and continues to be quite interesting. I do use distilled water for batteries and for mixing with antifreeze. Years ago, I installed a simple filter for the spring water piped to the house and that solved the calcium issue as we no longer see deposits on faucets or sinks. You should consider making some videos of your set up. Our farm has been a farm since 1754 and our hours was built in 1830. My auto house AKA barn was built late 1860's. Beautiful car! The black with red interior is such a fantastic period look. So nice to see such a well cared for, and correctly restored example. I especially like that the wood was left with a more satin finish, vs. the high gloss, plastic look that you see most of them redone with. You might want to put a tachometer on the engine and check the hot idle. It sounds like it's running too fast (when you were backing into the garage). With the injection pump linkage working the throttle plate on one side of the engine, and the injection pump rack on the other side, you'll want to separate the rods, and make sure the throttle plate isn't being held open and that it's stop screw is set so the plate is just barely not touching the throttle body, and that the rack in the pump is also at rest. Once all that is good, and re-attaching the linkage rods doesn't change those 2 settings, you can probably lean the pump out a click or too at the back of the pump (engine off), and that'll allow you to turn the idle air screw in just a bit, lowing the idle, while still keeping the same fuel mixture. They sound really sweet at idle. I've had a '66 250SE Coupe for 30yrs. Mine's 4 on the floor, and has an electric sliding sunroof.
@kensshowtell

Thank you for watching and your very informative and constructive comments. Yes, the idle is too high and I will follow your advice. I can use my timing light for the tachometer for monitoring idle adjustment. I will lower it to around 750RPM. Again, thank you for the recommendations.
@austinado16
@austinado16 Жыл бұрын
@@kensshowtell You're welcome. In case you're not familiar with the system, it gets no idle air from the throttle plate. So that adjustment screw (the throttle plate stop screw) is not the idle adjustment. With it's linkage rod popped off, you loosen the lock nut, and turn that screw "out" until the throttle plate touches the intake. You'll be able to tell this by watching the arm for the throttle plate where it would touch the screw, stop moving. At this point you turn the screw "in" until it just touches the arm, and then turn it slightly more "in," like maybe a 1/4 turn. The point being, to just barely keep the throttle plate from striking the aluminum housing inside. Then lock the not. That setting is not correct, and idle air will be controlled soley by the big idle air screw. The rod at the injection pump is also popped off, up top, at the main horizontal rod, and you want to check that when both rods are snapped back on, neither the throttle plate or the injection pump rack arm, are being moved. Adjust the length of the rods, until you achieve this. Small amounts at the same time, usually is best. The goal being, with no pressure on the gas pedal from your foot, the throttle plate should rest in idle position, and the pump should be resting at idle fuel amount. Correctly set up, it should actuate the pump just a tiny bit sooner than the throttle, so the engine doesn't go suddenly lean when you step on it. You might want to check ignition timing just to make sure there's not too much advance at idle, which would also increase the idle too much. With these base settings made, if it's still idling too high, that'll be because the pump is too rich at idle, which requires the idle screw to be turned too far out, because the engine needs so much MORE air at idle, to compensate for the overly rich mixture. So you then shut the engine off, and turn the big spring loaded adjustment wheel at the back of the pump (push it in and twist it back and forth a little until you feel it drop into a slot. It's basically a spring loaded slotted screw driver, and you are search for the slot that's in the screw, inside the pump). Turn a couple clicks lean and restart the engine. Less fuel, with the "too much" air setting on the big idle screw, should create a lean misfire at idle. So turn the big idle air screw "in" to lessen the air flow at idle, until you have a smooth sounding idle, that doesn't misfire. Keep repeating this process, in very small click amounts at the injection pump, until the engine will only smoothly run at about 750-850rpm, and any attempt to turn the big idle screw "out"(more air) just generates a lean misfire, but doesn't generate a rise in rpm. It may sound daunting, but once you settle into the process, and take your time, it will all start to make sense, and sort of become no big deal.

This one is an example of how far ahead Mercedes was at that point in time as it has mechanical fuel injection. No other maker did that at all. The four on the column was ahead of its time too when the USA only did three on the column. The shifting pattern is your typical "H" pattern just on its side.

Hi Ken, hope your doing well brother. I wanted to check in with you about my 1964 220SE. Recently the cars thermostat was closed so was overheating. I took it to the shop owner whom I had bought the car from, so they installed a thermostat and changed the radiator cap. While the owner test drove the car, he noticed lot of play in the 4 on a tree, and he said he took it apart and drilled in something, he said something was broken. Prior to that, I had noticed the play in the 4 on a tree stick and also noticed that it would grind when i would put in 2nd gear. So the mechanic said the bushing was broken so he fixed it. And the day upon picking up the car, the 4 on a tree stick was stiff and no more grinding when putting into 2nd gear. Now that it has been 2-3 days, it went back to lot of play on the stick and now its grinding again when going into 2nd gear. Wanted to see if you were familar with this and just wanted to get your insight. Thank you Ken.
@kensshowtell
@kensshowtell Ай бұрын
I don't know what the shop owner meant by "drilling" something. However, this is my hunch. There are two shift socket bushings (one for reverse, one for the forward gears) that are found in the engine compartment that connect the shift lever to linkage for the transmission. I suspect the shift socket bushing of the forward gears is bad. Also, there are two bushings on the transmission housing that connect those shift linkages to the forward and reverse gears. These could be bad too. Also, there are bushings where the shift lever connects to the shifting column and under the steering wheel pad. There are also bushings where the steering column goes through the floor. These bushings could be bad too.

@@kensshowtell Hi Ken, thank you for getting back to me here. I appreciate your insight. Btw thank you for explaining it. Update, so I visited the mechanic, and he checked the bushings sockets in the engine compartment and he showed me that he put new ones. The old one was bad. So we went on a test drive, when he drove the car it did not "grind" when shifting from 1st into "2nd gear". I told the mechanic it only happens when you use the stick and shift into second. Mechanic said i know what your saying, so he demonstrated the grinding sound when going from 1st to 2nd. He replicated it a few times to show me the grinding. So he showed me how it does not grind and how it does grind. He said that - going from 1st, the revs are too high and not enough gas. He said, I have said listen to the sound..when in 1st gear and rev is high, press clutch and let the rpm drop little and then put into second. He said it needs time to process. He said, now that i have learned to drive it, it seems like I am switching to fast, while the rpm is to high when going from 1st to second.

The oil filter is inside the oil filter canister. I use Mann filters. I suspect the oil and filter are available at your local parts store, however, I always buy online and have it delivered to me. Hi Ken, i stumbled on your channel and love this video. Enjoyed it a lot. Thank you. I have a question for you. I am planning to purchase a vintage Mercedes soon. I looked at 2 cars which I like. Trying to choose one from those 2 options. Option 1) 1963 Benz 220S automatic ( dual carburetors) - carburetors we’re rebuilt 11 months ago. Runs good. Needs little cosmetic work. I did some online searching about carburetors and I discovered online that they have issues with cold starts. Option 2) 1964 Benz 220SE ( fuel injection, key ignitions been updated). (Manual transmission). Unfortunately I do not know how to drive a manual. This car is in excellent shape mechanically and cosmetically Question: 1) Should I stay away from carburetors? 2) is cold start an issue with carburetors? 3) which option would you recommend from these 2?
@kensshowtell
@kensshowtell 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. Cold starting is an issue with all carbureted engines and not just for carbureted Mercedes. Stromberg carburetors were the stock configuration. I would find out if they have been changed to Weber's as that was a common conversion and not necessarily better. Mechanical fuel injection solves cold start issues somewhat by using the cold start injector or valve. However, mechanical fuel injection was very high tech in its day and there are very few shops that know anything about it. Once mechanical fuel injection is set up correctly you most likely will never have to touch it. I prefer the manual transmission in the W111 series of cars. The mechanical fuel injected cars are more powerful and efficient.

Once mechanical fuel injection is set up correctly you most likely will never have to touch it. I prefer the manual transmission in the W111 series of cars. The mechanical fuel injected cars are more powerful and efficient. Thank you for sharing all that knowledge and information. That was really helpful. So option#2 the 1964 Benz 220SE (fuel injected) which is a manual. Below is the history of the car: - New radiator - everything is service on the car - fuel injectors - the ignition switch has been updated - The car is owned by a local Mercedes auto repair shop. That shop has been in business for about 30+ years and its his personal car. Option 1 car, was a third party selling the car.

Option #2 sounds like the way to go. Get the mechanic to teach you how to drive the car correctly. It will be a learning curve, but you will truly have a high-quality classic. @@meetbhuller6324

Thank you for watching and your compliment. No, my car is not for sale. The best way for you to purchase one is to check-out your local market.

Hi Ken, I had a question for you. I finally got around to the tail light bulbs. The right side tail light is not working, only the right signal light works. So i replaced all the bulbs in the tail light bulb, the license plate bulb started working but the other are not working. The bulbs did have corrosion on them. Would you have any advice on this?

Yes. First remove one bulb at a time. Clean the connectors with Deoxit and Emory cloth, very fine sandpaper, or very fine file. Next, activate that circuit and test with 12-volt test light or voltmeter. Do the same at the fuse box for those circuits and clean the fuses. Sounds like the wiring is OK.
