The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. In 1958, a concept car was introduced called "la Galaxie" which incorporated the headlights into pods inline with the grille and a reduced front profile.[2]
For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[3] however, the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[4]: 401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala[5] and the Plymouth Belvedere.
Model year 1964 was the fourth and final year of this body style. Interior trim was altered, and the exterior featured a more sculpted look which was actually designed to make the car more aerodynamic for NASCAR. The formal-roof "boxtop" style was no longer available, all non-wagon models now featuring the "fastback" roof design that was the runaway best-seller in 1963. The base 300 was replaced by a line of Custom and Custom 500 models. The 289 continued as the base V8 and was standard in the XL series. XL models got new thin-shell bucket seats with chrome trim. Federal regulations now required lap-style safety belts for both front outboard occupants. The ignition switch was moved from the left side of the steering column, to the right, but otherwise the attractive instrument panel remained unchanged from '63. The 1964 XL two-door hardtop became the best seller of any XL produced in any year.
The 427 cu in (7.0 L) engine was used in 50 lightweight fiberglass-equipped cars for drag racing. These competed in North America but were still too heavy and Ford introduced the lightweight Fairlane Thunderbolt.
The Ford Country Squire station wagon, while wearing "Country Squire" badging, was actually part of the Galaxie 500 line. Some Country Squires had "Galaxie 500" badging on the glovebox indicating the series name. These station wagons featured the same trims as Galaxie 500s, and were a step up from the base-model Country Sedan.

You are correct Mr. Hpiguy! These are fictitious interpretations of modified oval track cars, and should be finished however the builder pleases. As for the complainers, nobody is forcing them to buy this series of kits. Like a lot of other folks, I personally think they're great, have purchased them all, and encourage Round 2 to continue making all of the old AMT reissues available to us! Bottom line is that it's a hobby - enjoy it! 😊😊😊😊

These cars were very similar to the dirt late model race car was at that time except for the stick tires there was a company in the late 1970's that had a soft tire that had tread very similar to a dirt racing tire . The modified series of race cars were mostly ten year old cars that may or may not have been a Winston cup car . But in the southern states it was very common in 1970 for the sportsman or limited late model race cars to have huge tire some manufacturers were MARSH Hoosher Firestone and several other small companies I still have a few of the homemade split wheels used for winding garden hose onto

On the tires on these cars I round off the shoulder of the tires a bit and it makes a big difference in the look as for realistic! The huge tire seemed to be an east coast thing on that class of car.

Now you're talking my neighborhood. I grew up in Sylmar. Then to Newhall then Valencia and Canyon Country when I married. My brother has lived in Saugus for about 30 years. I have a picture my wife took of me wheeling the Brad Gattie Supermodified back to our pit after a trophy dash win. I wasn't the driver. I was a fabricator and the tire guy on the team.

I like the color you have chosen and some of the fine details in this model, like that pad printed net on the windshield. Is there another '64 Galaxie model or models out at present, given the extra parts like the convertible top boot and stock caps and different grilles?

Built these kits as a kid when they were first released. So thankful for Round 2 for starting to release them again. Are they basic, easy to build kits? Yep sure are, fun too. People complain about the size of the tires and them not being the correct size. I well remember when they raced those big tires, called them "humpers". As soon as my Galaxie gets here, I'll have them all in my in my stash to be built.

I first built this kit in 2007 as a “Fireball” Roberts tribute car from the AMT/Ertl/RC re-issue kit. I’m glad to see that Round2 has opened up a few more sprues to give us more of the custom parts from the original AMT annual kit offering from 1964. Thumbs up! I’ll definitely be picking up one of these kits.
