On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 9-17-20.
We're looking at a 1964 ½ Ford Mustang Convertible in Tropical Turquoise Paint. The car comes with the factory K Code 289 CI V8 “Hi Po” high performance engine with a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Dennis Roxworthy. Dennis’s had this car since 2005. He shares the rare combination of factory 289 “Hi-Po” V8, 4 Speed, Rally Pac, Radio delete, made this car desirable for him as a “Ford Guy” so he purchased in. This one looks “showroom” new.

Yep, interestingly I got a 4 Speed 66 GALAXIE 500 ( Deep,Maroon: like Leno’s redo) with 352 4 BBL(* boo)/ no Disc Brakes, etc, in 1967..... lot of whine, and I had to,beef vehicle , up a lot: special tires/Metallic Brakes/ Coolant / Shocks....actually I was Pharmacy School and could not afford the 7 Liter loaded/or Corvette/Loaded GTO, ETC.......admittedly that Ford ran pretty good till 1972ish, sold to Avid FORD Guy.....

This almost makes me want to cry. And remember my 65 289 3-speed that I add a few years ago. I absolutely loved that car. So bummed when I had to sell it. She was one of the first 65 Mustangs built according to the VIN number. Boy did I have some fun. She was poppy red which was basically Orange with a white vinyl top and black interior. I never got to do everything I wanted to do with it before I had to sell it. It was five of the best years of my life what's that old Pony. It was like Stangri-La.

When this was brand new, I was only 2 years old, going on 3! Never knew there was such a Mustang - in such a color! Only things that ring bells are the engine and drivetrain, and of course the rally style wheels... Those were all characteristic of the 65 Shelby Fastback.. Beautiful car, this one is!

Beautiful Mustang! Couple of observations to show how cars have evolved. The brake lights, normal for 1964, would be considered quite dim today. When the engine was revved, the plumes of exhaust were noteworthy. The Trunk Treats brochure goes out of its way to show how practical the Mustang was - room for four, groceries and the like. Ford must have been worried it would not be viewed as practical enough. Stunning car and unbelievable restoration. Plus K code must be very rare. Thanks Lou!

Always, always loved this mustang era! I remember the time well. 1965, my mother, father and I were driving from Ontario Canada to California in my fathers ‘58 Buick Special because my father was thinking about moving there. All the way I was on the lookout for mustangs. I think I drove the old man nuts pointing out and hollering “there’s a Mustang, there’s another mustang, and another mustang!” All the way through Michigan, Missouri, Texas yep all the way! 👍 cheers🇨🇦🥂

That K code 289 has a extra internal bob weight on the front of the crankshaft, behind the timing chain, requiring a special (thinner) timing chain and gears to allow clearance for the weight. It's a very special engine. For anyone that's interested, the study of the K code engine is fascinating

Hi, Lou! The Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964, and technically it was officially a 1965 model. "1964 1/2" was a number given by the public for those examples built before the following fall, and not by Ford. The 2+2, or fastback Mustangs, debuted with the rest of the 1965 Fords. Until Chevrolet came out with the Camaro 2 1/2 years later, the closest thing they had to compete with the Mustang was the Corvair Monza and Corsa. In fact, it was the Monza that inspired Ford to develop the Mustang. It sold more than 680,000 units for the long 1965 model year, a record for a first-year model that stood until 1980, when it was broken by the Chevy Citation of all things, and I've heard it said that demand was something like 15 times that number! I've also heard that a truck driver drove his truck off the road and crashed into a building when he saw one the first time, and that there was a diner somewhere that put up a sign reading "Our hotcakes are selling like Mustangs!" Much of its appeal was that it was a small and sporty car at an attractive starting price, and that it gave buyers a long and flexible list of options that allowed them to make it as economical, or as practical, or as luxurious, or as high-performance as they liked. BTW, I don't think I've ever seen double red-stripe tires before! Of course, Ford kept the horse theme going from there, with the Bronco, the Maverick and the Pinto. Finally a classic mustang. My first car was a 1966 fastback in silver blue with silver blue interior. It was a strange car because of the combination of options. It was a 6 cylinder but it had air conditioning and a console. It also had black rubber bumper guards that were round with a white mustang in the middle. I’ve yet to see those bumper guards on any car for sale. Probably because it was a New York City car. Everyone put rubber bumper guards on their cars back then. Most of the cars that are restored today are not from NYC.

I love this car but the hard core Mustang people will tell you that there is no such thing as a 1964 1/2 Mustang. They call them “early” 65’s. The early ones came with 260 CID They also had generators and not alternators and there were a few other minor differences that I can’t remember now. The 271 HP 289’s came along later in the game. I once owned the 336th Mustang ever produced! It had all of the early stuff including the Original Edition plaque on the dash! Ruby Garrison was the name of the woman who bought it new. Never called it a 64 1/3 because there was no such thing! A lot of arguments come from this! I love his car and it’s unique color!

Absolutely beautiful ...Loved every second of this... Here in Australia we have a similar affinity with the Falcon .. Our similar car would probably be the 1966 to 1968 XR Falcon GT . That also had the 289 . Really special car . The most famous though is the 1971 XY GTHO (HO stood for Handling Options) Phase lll .. Only 300 ever built ..Go for $700 K plus these days if all the codes align but the XR , XT XW and XY GT's also pull big dollars , The GTHO was essentially a full race car ..If you ever happen to be in Australia Lou make certain you line up a look at one of the Falcon GT or GTHO's ...Cheers ...

Great video! On those Keys the cars made in the 64 model year had those standard Keys for all Ford's. In the 65 model year Ford changed the Keys to the double sided keys. The teeth were on both sides so that you could put it in the lock with either side up. The key head design was changed most Ford's got a standard Ford head design. Mercury got new keys wit a Mercury logo on them. Lincoln had it's own key. Also some models got their own Keys, Mustang got a Key head with a Mustang logo, the horse like in the grill in front. I think The Thunderbird had it's own key, but I never saw one. I think that only last a few years, then all Ford products went back to one standard key.

Wow! First generation Mustangs don’t come better than this ‘64 1/2 Hi-Po convertible. Beautiful color too. I didn’t see the disc brake pedal, so it probably has drums all around. The whining of that 4-speed transmission is music to my ears! Dennis has become my favorite time machine 😎

Car is beautiful !!! I loved the '64 1/2 knowledge for detailed info. Good first gen Mustangs have been worth alot of money with convertibles 'taking the cake' for years now. This is like museum quality. I don't blame him for trailering it. Just today i was at the cross walk i use every day (ECR, Ca,,,almost got creamed there just over a week ago, dawn) and a Mustang CS in metallic blue was going north. I'm thinking "Nice car, worth some money...Whats he doing in go home commute traffic ?' Nice day, Friday. A treat to see, though. This was better :) BTW, i dug the lumpy idle. Choke induced but when i hear something like this i think of Ginger Baker.

My gosh Lou Dennis has the most amazing cars! I just never know what is next as each one is so unique. This car is definitely a te capsule my gosh love that color sporty but yet a refreshing color and with those dual red line tires and that motor and the four speed it is truly a gorgeous sports car. I get do excited to see what Dennis has next I love his knowledge and story about each one of his units. That ride along had to be awesome and just in that ride along had me nervous too with that traffic. That car was done do perfectly that you could swear it was brand new. The Hi-Po 289 was one of Carroll Shelby's favorite engines. He said that he always preferred Hi-Po 289 Cobras to the big-block Cobras. The big-block cars required heavier duty cooling, brakes, drive train and suspension components than the small-block cars.The lighter 289 engine packages gave the cars more responsive steering and handling. Shelby believed that the 289 Cobras were more balanced and more capable packages than the the 427/428 cars.

My former business partner always talked about having one of these back when they first came out! He claimed his was the red one with the red interior in the brochure, He claimed the original owner was friends with a big shot at Ford and bought the car from the brochure and shortly after his son and daughter were in it and went to pick up pizza and on the way home with it they rolled it over into a ditch and of course it was written off as a total! He worked in the Ford dealership body shop in our hometown of Mansfield, Ohio, (Moorehead Ford!, No longer by that name!) and talked the owner into keeping the salvage and selling it to him! Back then they didn't brand the titles or anything, He said the car rolled light and he straightened most of the panels and lucked into a top fabric that had an almost undetectable flaw in it that had been replaced under warranty on another new convertible! The parts dept is supposed to keep warranty take offs for a certain amount of time in case of audits and then dispose of it, He said that it worked out perfect in that by the time he had the car done the time on the top was up! But the top was black instead of white! He said beggars can't be choosers and that he liked the black better than the white anyway! He always bragged that his had the 64 1/2 hood and core support with the old style horns in a different location and it had a Generator instead of an alternator! He was adamant that the 64 1/2 had the generator , different core support for the old style horns and of course the ''bulb'' looking horns! He always talked about the car setting in the body shop for a long time while the insurance company tried to make the owner allow them to repair it and it had a Pepperoni sausage and double cheese pizza splattered all over the interior and people would look in it and get sick thinking it was brains and blood splattered all over inside it! I remember this color well as my sisters boyfriend had a coupe this color with a white interior and it had the generator and the hood and headlamp panels with the horns and core support, It was a 260 V8 automatic car that was in bad shape from Ohio winters by the time his mommy bought him a brand new 74 Dodge Charger for his college graduation! My sister dumped him shortly after because she along with myself and my dad all three had bought new 1973 Pontiacs on the same day and our mom and dad didn't buy ours for us ! We paid for our own! He was an only child and a spoiled brat! This is a cool rare car! I don't know if I could have a convertible and never put the top down! But I understand why he doesn't on a concourse car like this! Sorry to ramble on, I'm getting old!

Back in 1970, a fellow Navy guy had a 66 Fastback, Hipo 289 4bbl, 4sp. It was so quick, and fun. But the guy told me the car was scary to drive, once you exceeded 90mph--the front end would begin to drift!

Another thing this video brings up is the half model year. The model year for asembly manufacturing changed in July the plant would shut down for a couple weeks and retool for the new models, then in October the new year models would go on sale. So in October of 1962 the 1963 cars went go on sale. In April of 63 Ford introduced the Galaxie 500 XL. It was a Galaxie 500 with a Fastback roofline or a convertible top, front bucket seats with a consul and the gear selector mounted on the consul. I beleave the engine was performance engine I am not up on those peculiars. They also came out with the Falcon Futura Sprint models that had bucket seats, floor mounted gear selector, a Fastback roof or a convertible and a 260 ci V8 Engine. The advertising for the cars called them a 63 1/2 since they were introduced in April which was halfway through the model year. So in April of 1964 Ford decided to introduce a new Model at the opening of 1964 World's Fair. The new model they were introducing was the 1965 Mustang. The car was originally supposed to be a 1965 model. The slight differences in it that Dennis pointed out probably were there because the plants weren't ready for the 65 model year yet. These cars were made on the Falcon platform and probably produced on the same assembly line as the Falcon. That may be a clue to the differences. That is probably why the 64 standard one way keys were used on it. So instead of advertising it as a 64 1/2 Ford advertised it as a 65 here early in 64. So it really isn't a 64 it is a 65.

Other differences in early 65s (64½) in the interior are color matched to interior door locks, the A on the fresh air vent, the off position in the center on the heater control and the AM radio starts at 6 not 5.

It's really amazing how classic old cars never die even though metal and steel don't make them in the auto factories anymore steel metal in the factories for parts still exist today for classic muscle cars restoration to head to the shops

Back in the mid-70s, My wife and I bought a 66 Mustang Convertible, 289 2bbl, automatic. It had a special, "Pony" interior. A few years later, an idiot guy slammed into the front/left side of the car, bending the frame. My insurance guy called a friend of his, that restored old Mustangs...the dude showed up quickly, and paid me $,1000 cash for my wrecked car!...He said he would somehow straighten out the frame, and use it as a show/parade car...He said that interior was rare, and that is what made him buy the car!...one thing about those older Mustangs..Lee Ioccoca himself has said that folks should no longer restore these cars, as the gas tank location (the floor of the trunk was the top of the tank!) is now considered to be a serious safety hazard...quite a few fires resulted from even moderate rear-end collisions..something to think about!
