Plymouth Belvedere is a series of American automobile models made by Chrysler from 1954 to 1970 that were marketed under the Plymouth brand.
The Belvedere name was first used for a new hardtop body style in the Plymouth Cranbrook line for the 1951 model year. In 1954 the Belvedere replaced the Cranbrook as the top trim and became a full model line with sedans, station wagons and convertible body styles. The Belvedere continued as Plymouth's full-sized car until 1965, when it became an intermediate, and was replaced after the 1970 model year by the Satellite, a name originally used for the top-trim level Belvederes.
Introduced on March 31, the 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook Belvedere is a two-door pillarless hardtop. It was Plymouth's first such body design and was introduced in response to the 1950 Chevrolet Bel Air, and the Ford Victoria, the first two-door hardtop in the low-priced American market.
The Cranbook Belvedere was the name for the two-door hardtop version of the Cranbrook and built on the same 118.5 in (3,010 mm) wheelbase. Powering the Belvedere is the Chrysler flathead 217.8 cu in (3.6 L) straight-6 engine with a 7.00:1 compression ratio producing 97 hp (72 kW; 98 PS) (SAE gross).
For 1952, Plymouth kept the Cranbrook Belvedere largely unchanged. The biggest alteration was to the color scheme; to further distinguish the top-level Belvedere from other Plymouths, the two tones now flowed from the roof over the beltline onto the trunk, which has been referred to as the "saddleback" treatment. Two-tone color schemes were "sable bronze" over suede, black over "mint green", and gray over blue. Overdrive was made available as optional equipment in the 1952 Plymouth. In overdrive, the engine made three revolutions for each rear wheel revolution and four without overdrive. The engine was a complete carryover from 1951. Production for 1951 and 1952 totalled 51,266 units.
The Belvedere remained a part of the Cranbrook series through the 1953 model year, which saw all Plymouth models completely restyled. Major style changes include a shorter 114 in (2,900 mm) wheelbase, a one-piece windshield, flush rear fenders, and a lower hood line. In April 1953, Plymouths received the Hy-Drive semi-automatic transmission. The engine was carried over from 1952 with the only enhancement being a slight increase in the compression ratio to 7.10:1, which yielded a rating of 100 hp (75 kW).
A total of 35,185 1953 Belvederes were sold.
The 1962 model year full-size Plymouths were "downsized", with more compact outside dimensions. American car buyers at the time were in the thought mode of "bigger is better", and sales of these models suffered. However, the smaller Plymouth provided greater owner approval in their actual use.[11] A Plymouth Belvedere with six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission was compared to the intermediate-size Ford Fairlane and the compact-size Chevrolet Chevy II in an economy test by Popular Mechanics and the road test concluded that the Belvedere was "a very pleasant transportation package."[12] Another advantage of the smaller and lighter body was in drag racing.
The 1963 and 1964 models used the same unibody platform as the 1962s, but were restyled to look longer and wider.
The 1964 Belvedere (and corresponding Fury hardtop coupes) featured a new "slant-back" roofline that proved to be popular, and sales improved significantly over the previous design.
The 1964 Belvedere was also the car used to introduce the 426 Chrysler Hemi engine, which used a canted large-valve arrangement. This was such a significant high-RPM breathing improvement that Hemi-equipped Plymouth Belvederes won first, second, and third at NASCAR's 1964 Daytona race. One of the winning drivers was Richard Petty.

The background stories for why your models are built the way they are, are great. I wonder if the complainers ever watch/listen to your video to the end. You know, where you say "to build them the way you want to".

Just goes to show you don't need a lot of high end paints and tools to finish a model up- just about everything you need can be found around the house or in the craft section at Wal Mart. Why give companies like Tamiya top dollar for the same tools you'll find over in hardware or in health and beauty! :) Spend that extra money you save on another kit! :)

Good to know that such kind of modelling still exists, nowadays it tends to be highly equipment focused, beginners also think they need all those fancy airbrushes and name brand paint, ect... This is what modelling suppose to be, pure fun, creativity and improvisation... :)

Yet another great build/review. Couldn’t wait to see this one. Yes, the door panels are for multiple Mopar interiors of that time. The Color Me Gone Dodge 330 particularly, uses the “smooth” door panels. Anyway, I love the mild weathered flavor with the Slant six. Very cool!

Hello, nice job. The one I did was the first issue and I think it had a radio in it. I used the 426 and used the cross ram intake 2, 4 barrel intake from the 1949 mercury kit from AMT and posted it on a web site and got 5 stars for it and great reviews. It is black with a red interior like the one I saw on the inter net I really like your build. thank you very much for it.

Built this recently. A friend's mom had one like this when I was a kid. Painted it the same light blue. Wish it had a column shift for the stock slant 6, I had to fashion one. Otherwise, a lot of fun! Loved that it had a radio delete plate in the interior.

Chris, your weathering skills are top notch and something I aspire to. I know your closing monologue regarding haters was directly aimed at that person who trolled your videos just to spread negativity. As I said on your Facebook page, you have far more fans than haters and we all enjoy your work and content! Your channel brought me back to the hobby, which is why I post my project progress on your page. Once I get past my guitar business venture, I will be back on my models and currently have a couple new projects in the works soon. One of which is gonna be the International Payhauler 350 that I know is a upcoming video and build from you (I very much look forward to that!). Just remember to paint that Detroit hot pink (I mean Detroit Alpine Green) so the Bus Grease Monkey doesn't haunt your dreams lololol.

I did exactly this! It’s so hard to find kits with 6’s, most kits are just hero type cars (muscle cars, hot rods, luxury cars) and unfortunately most only come with v8’s.. I personally prefer economy cars like the pickups and this Belvedere and the dodge 330 I just picked up, because they’re the type of classic cars I prefer.. anyways, decided not to use the slant as it went in the 330 and my father-in-law fired up the 3D printer and made me a later slant with the emissions stuff on it to make it look more correct

glad you decided to do this kit, it is very similar to the richard petty kit that i bought years ago but did not build, i still have the dash insert from that kit, that kit came with the hemi, but it seems to me that there was some difference, that being the door panels, seems to me that in that kit the window cranks were on the chrome tree, and there were recesses in the door panels that could be painted body color for that super stock drag car, nice thing though i can cut them off and make the recesses with a drill bit, sadly, in the changeover, amt did not include the racing exhaust that was in the lindberg version, they are almost identical, and i wish i could find the richard petty version to kit bash with this one, ( i have three) so i could make a drag car with a hemi, a max wedge car, with this ones included 426 wedge, and a grandmas grocery getter like us older guys would have gotten for high school daily drivers, as usual, nice job on this

Yep, that wedge was just as good as the Hemi and damned near just as powerful! I had a buddy back in the 70’s that ran a 69’ Roadrunner almost every weekend at Edgewater ( Near Cinci) but he had the Hemi and a Wedge and he would take turns swapping them out and running them. The ETA’s were very close, not a real big difference in them! Far as I’m concerned this is the same kit as the Lindberg, which I still have one in my stash, unbuilt.

Here is a real life story for you folks .... 1971 while in high school I bought my 2 door hardtop 64 Belvedere just like this model but for real from a guy selling it for his brother who was in Vietnam. I paid $ 450. It had factory posi-traction, duals, black tires and factory simple Belvedere cup hubcaps, a factory hurst 4-speed and a 426 factory engine with a 4 bbl Carter carb. Had radio, heater and original bench seat interior. Installed a removable 8-track. I was set to go. Many a cool nights cruising to say the least. btw, Belvederes unlike this model, came only with bench seats and not buckets from the factory. You would have to step over to the Fury line up for that interior. Mine had been repainted a dark brown yet retained the good condition original stock beige interior that many Belvederes had. The non-hemi 426 was referred to as a 426 wedge and could be had with either a typical flat 361/383 center carb type manifold or the special expansive 426 wedge manifold which offered separate long intake runners that mounted twin 4-barrel Carter carbs outboard over either side of the valve covers instead conventionally over the center of the engine valley cover area. In 1972 I took off alone on a road trip in the summer and drove my Belvedere from the midwest out to San Francisco/Berkeley, then later on up to Seattle, then later that year back to the midwest. Wow what an adventure with many stops and many stories. The interstate highway system in many parts of the western states were not yet completed and you often had to go through towns then get back onto finished sections. Today one can just go straight through. 25 cents a gallon then. I eventually sold it to a friend in the mid seventies and moved to the west coast, and one day while visiting back home in the mid eighties, I accompanied a relative to a salvage yard in my home town. We were walking through the yard when I went around a corner of grouped cars and there suddenly before me ... my old Belvedere. It had been junked and pillaged but I knew her right off the bat and felt somehow she knew me too. I stood there for a very long time in silence with my hand on her fender ... A lot of good times and memories flooded my head and most saddened to see her this way... but that was a long time ago and as many memories go yet still spare the emotions. Good to see I can buy this model now and perhaps I will just for old times sake.

Had a similar experience, TWICE ! The first time was rather emotional the car was at the top of the heap so I could pick out things that I did to the interior. Many and many memories came rushing back. This was the car ( 1971 GTO convertible) that I took my first love to her prom to. Two months later ( after the H.S. Prom, ) she and her mom were hit head on ( in a different vehicle) and both were killed, i would have to image it was in an instant. I was notified after I had just entered the Air Force while in advance military training. So sad, still with me to this day. The second vehicle was a 1970 Cougar Boss 302 Eliminator. Found it 10 years later in the same town that i sold it in. Sitting at the bottom of about 6 cars I couldn’t see much, no motor, no hood, nodular rear end gone. But the amazing thing is that the entire interior was still there. Nice seats, woodgrain dash with tach. I even found the original hurst side screw lock 4 speed “ T” handle shifter grip. Weird. But all true. Now I cant even find my car keys. !

@@hpiguy I am so far! It’s my first ever model. I quickly learned to assemble the engine before painting. I’ll know better for the next one! great video, I’ve been back to it for reference many times.

Really awesome build Chris! Totally dig your weathering/aging tips as always! I agree that this is a detailed and excellent fiting kit, especially the slant six. I build mine as a six cylinder drag racer. Outstanding presentation my friend!

I wonder when you paint the parts still attached to the molding frame, how do you handle the missing paint spots after cutting the parts from the frame? Do you cut and sand those and add more primer?

AMT has definitely been killing it recently with their new kits in terms of detail and parts count. I would say its on par or even better than what Revell does with their special edition kits

Yes this kit has ben used as stock plymouth kits and they have the amt 1964 plymouth lawman superstock kit , and i think some one mentioned richard petty plymouth and they use same tooling for 64 dodge 330 polara stock and race super stockers

The laugh is how many people really don't know how good and strong the Slant Six really is. Done right, it is not a push over as many think. Performance can be had if you know what you are doing. My favorites would be the 440 Wedge for look out I am yanking Earth out of orbit. Hem's are cool, but are maintenance nightmares. No thanks. The new Hemi in the SRT Mopars are easy peasy and 485HP hurts no ones feelings on pump gas either. Sometimes older plain sucks day to day. But for cruising and showing off, yeah Old Hemi is great.

Chris, yet another excellent tutorial as aways! Just wondering why you don't use Testor's marker pens for touchup work, especially for gloss and flat black parts. They sure make MY job easier! Rock on Brother!

Another great fun build. Pity no kit makers do some British humdrum sedans from the 60's and 70's, like Austin Cambridge or Standard Vangaurd or even Triumph Dolomites ets, they would be great to weather up as they rusted like an old nail in sea water 😅🤣😂. Keep the vidos coming.

Flat door panel looks like aluminum panel for racing . The old revell 55 chevy with opening doors & trunk. You flip the door panels it looks like the bear door structure

It could be built as a Max Wedge 426. Put the battery in the trunk, get a cross ram and two carbs, use the plain interior. You need some drag slicks, and a scooped hood. My friend is selling his 64 Plymouth drag car.

Great video as always a little disappointed they only give you one wheel option but that's why I keep spare parts from other kits. Great trick with the silly putty. Have a great weekend.

The difference in the door panels are the plymouth option groups. Belvedere 1 little details, Belvedere 2 higher details, sport fury highest details carpet on the bottom of door panels. Common practice in the 60's was a lighter weight Belvedere 1 with a 426 stage 3 street wedge in it (plan wrapper street racer) or a high roller sport fury with 426 in it. More stage 3 426 went into Belvidere 1 and coupes than the other 2 option groups
