I didn't know they also made musical instruments. They did make a really nice stand-alone reverb unit, much like the Fender 6G15. I've seen several but never owned one.

My friend Chris Darrow , who played in many bands , like Kaleidoscope and with Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor and a lot of other people let me play his Premier solid body electric bass with a solid rosewood neck and it said Premier , New York on it . I think it was from the early 60`s , so I think they made a few things other than the Amps a bit later ! This Amp here sounds fabulous ! I like the extra headroom ! The bass might have been as early as 58 or 59 ! I am an amp from scratch builder who likes to experiment which is why I find Your videos extremely valuable to watch . So clear about the functions of components and the reactions to variables in those components ! Thank You for making and posting these videos!

I've learned that the best way to manage "tone" is to throw the tone stack away and tweak your gain stages with the proper coupling and cathode capacitors. A "high cut" is OK in the right location, too. If you apply these techniques, you can keep loss at a minimum and retain that beautiful chime. And learn to use your guitar's tone and volume control.

Yes, those eyelet/terminal boards really organize all the components. The chassis almost looks empty as a result. I guess they were the precursors to printed circuit boards.

Hello Uncle Doug, I hope you and your family are all doing well. I watched the J Geils cabinet repair video, you did a fantastic job fixing it, by the way, and, it looks as though comments have been disabled. I am sending this comment via a much earlier video. If it is your wish to no longer receive comments, I will of course respect that. Thank you for 10 years of great instructional videos and lessons learned in electronics, not to mention all the cool vintage amps you have featured. Your channel is my absolute number one favorite of my oldest subscriptions. I want to wish you and your family, all the best and every Happiness from Willamina, Oregon, Cass.

That is a little gem, sir. Good sound, loud for it's size and a 1950 look, which I really like. I would make a replacement top back panel for gigging use, to cool that magical tube, and keep the original safe somewhere. And a non invasive preamp line out to a PA, and I'd fix the missing part of the P. Woah, finally something I could do! Thanks.

I have a Model 50 with a different design. It has good ventilation. Man that thing sounds great. I have the hideously beautiful red bakelite knobs. It's smaller than yours and sounds as big as five Champs with nice break up. And it's pretty, despite the "wimpy tolex". Mine is stock and needs to be recapped. It's doing a weird ghosting thing. A quiet, distorted signal along with the clean. My tube gut has the damned virus though, and I'm really worried about him and his wive. Damn that virus. Great guy. A treasure. Thanks for the video. Be careful out there. We love you and need your videos in our lives. We like hanging out with you.

Thanks, JF. The volume setting was probably around 6 in the workshop sound demo. This amp still has its original 7591-A Multivox tube and it's getting a little tired, so the volume control has to be turned up a bit extra for high volume. Re the schematic, it is readily available on the Internet. Do a search for "Bargain Bin Amp Heaven Schematics". They have tons of great schematics for 60's amps, including the Premier 50.

I have a model 50 with 12AX7 preamp tube, 7591A power tube and diode rectifier. I downloaded a schematic for it that seems to match my circuit. It appears to have grid-leak bias on the first triode if I'm not mistaken. It was serviced at some point, but still has the non-polarized two prong plug and the "death" cap was replaced among other various caps and resistors. The cap can was replaced with a 40/20/20/20 multi section can and it looks like the tech jumpered two terminals. I'm suspecting that this was done to get the 40uf, but I'm not really sure. It works great for harp, but it does hum quite a bit so I'm going to convert to a 3-prong cord with dedicated ground. I enjoy your tutorials!
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 9 жыл бұрын
gorblimey61 Thanks :) I believe this amp was made for quite a few years, and there are several variations of the circuit. Tap your 7591A output tube while the amp is on and see if it's microphonic. I've had noise and instability problems with some of these tubes. The three-wire grounded cord is always a good idea. See my video about causes of hum in tube amps......it may help you. Good luck.

7591-A... Neat, looking at the tech specs of that tube, it appears to be a low output impedance. The way it's hooked up reminds me of 50L6... Made to be LOUD. However in P-P it has "ultra linear operation"... must be more common in hi-fi.

I bought one of those handles from Antique Electronics Supply (love the company) - the handle not so much. I now get mine hand made at Brookwood Leather (brookwoodleather.com). Very high quality, hand made in the US - and you can have it embossed/stamped. These handles are incredible and well worth the price! You could have the Uncle Doug's Amps stamped right into the leather! Or maybe Rusty's Single Ended 6V6 Amp? Seriously Uncle Doug you are like me in many ways (competition at the flea market), but when it comes to what you are carrying your amp around with - buy a high quality handle! - This guy is a real leather craftsman!!

@Uncle Doug Okay Doug - this Premier Mukltivox did not seem to have a negative feedback loop - and does it have center tap transformer? which of your upgrades would you try on this? your stuff is so interesting, and I love that beachmusic blues instrumental.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 11 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Andrew. The Premier 50 does not have a negative feedback loop, and since it's single-ended, there is no center tap in the output TF. This amp is limited by its 8" Utah speaker, which is not the greatest, but to pep things up a bit, I added a 50uf @ 100V bypass cap to the cathode of the 7591-A, which increased the volume and added some bass response. I recently posted a tone comparison video featuring the Premier 50 and a Harmony H410-A, both in saturated, over-driven mode. I think you might get a kick out of it.

Hey Uncle Doug, would you know where I can obtain a schematic to a vintage Western Electric KS-19602 (Made by McIntosh) amp? It was built in 1960 and used by AT&T as a line amp. I'm trying to convert it to a guitar amp. and could really use a schematic. It is a push-pull design using (2) 7591A's for output rated as 25W total out. Thanks in advance, really enjoy being subscribed to all your great vid's! --Dean

Greetings, Dean. I have no experience at all with that amp, but from what I can gather, it's an excellent piece of equipment. I did a search for the Western Electric KS-19602 Schematic and came up with a couple schematics that may (or may not) be your chassis. Here is the link: www.one-electron.com/FC_ProAudio.html Give it a try. Meanwhile, I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Good luck !!

Quite frankly, two-wire plugs simply didn't cause many problems. They still don't......a bunch of my amps still have them. The real problem is polarity. If you have two electrical devices that use their chassis as ground and they are plugged in with opposite polarity, when you touch both chassis, you will get a bad shock. If a two-wire plug is polarized (one big prong, one small prong) so that the white (common) wire is to the chassis, the problem is solved. See my video on the Current Limiter.

I just scored one of these for $10. It's solid state rectifier and I can't tell if it's a 7591 or 6V6, as the tube isn't labeled for type. It's a Multivox tube though. Also it's point to point unlike yours and has a neon lamp instead of the glass jewel. The speaker is an unlabeled one, with code 6516 and 7002.3.

Re The Gibson BR-3, I understand they are quite rare (only 79 ever made) and use two 7B4 Loctal tubes, like an old 1947 National that I restored (video posted on my channel). OUCH!!! the rectfier won't provide any sag at all, because this amp is a class A, with a cathode biased output tube. No floating current in this circuit which could provide sag trough a rectifier tube. This concept of "rectifier provides sag" is OK in SOME circuit, for instance, in Class AB amps with fixed bias. In a tweed bassman, for example. But not in a tweed deluxe, not in any Champ, and not in any SE amp with cathode bias power. You can verify this by measuring the voltage on the plate while playing. It won't drop.
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree Andre. Tweed Fenders are famous for their sag, which is a result of an inability for the power supply to keep up with rapid changes in current demand when the output tube(s) are suddenly driven hard. Indeed, about the only tube amp circuits that are immune to sag would utilize SS diode rectification.....like the later Fender Bassman circuits.
@andyboyharp
@andyboyharp 6 жыл бұрын
"Tweed Fenders are famous for their sag, which is a result of an inability for the power supply to keep up with rapid changes in current demand when the output tube(s) are suddenly driven hard." That will happen not in all Fenders, but only in those which have floating current.... As you well put "changes in current demand"!!! and those are the class AB, with fixed bias (tweed bassman, blackface PRO, Deluxe, Super, etc)... that means, every PP power with negative voltage applied to the control grids. That "changes in current demand" (which is acctualy called floating current) will NOT occur in cathode biased amps, like Tweed champs, tweed deluxe, tweed princetons, etc. (check it out and you'll see) And the SAG of a rectifier depends logicaly on the variances of current demand of the power amp which passes trough the internal resistance of the rectifier. This is not a "point of view" for you to desagree, I'm sorry. It's theory that you can test easily by measuring the +B voltage of the amp while playing, which, in this particular case, is constant.
@andyboyharp
@andyboyharp 6 жыл бұрын
You can also give a look at the power tube datasheet. Look at the max and min values of plate current according to class operation.
