Incredible to see! All the athletes are adult women who have actually gone through puberty, and the highest level of skill is a front handspring.
@chocdave4 жыл бұрын
That was the compulsory routine. If you keep watching the tumbling difficulty was much higher. But there isn't a mat even, let alone springs. Just a piece of carpet to mark the area. Many gyms had no mats and were tumbling on wood floors fur practice and there were no foam pits. Earlier in the year a US man dared a double back on the wood floor. Ten years later many post-puberty women did double backs but the equipment was so much better. To train on and compete on. These women still pioneered a lot. But compulsory tumbling didn't include any somersaulting until the 1981-1984 compulsory and then it was a layout.
@rosewhite2594 жыл бұрын
@@chocdave Interesting. I just assumed that gyms where Olympians trained would have had mats. I do know that the modern-day floor has springs to help the gymnasts, but it was still fascinating to see how much "easier" the tumbling was back then. It was definitely refreshing to watch adult women perform when these days we see children doing some obviously dangerous moves out there.

i love the longer lines of the female body at this time. And the tumbling was a lot slower because the girls were taller & it was more about momentum and pure strength, rather than the explosive power we see with today's smaller girls. Gymnastics was definitely a graceful and beautiful sport back then, like acrobatic ballet.

Part of it is there weren’t springs in the floor until the 1980 olympics! Hard to get lots of speed and height when you don’t have a bouncy floor

The slower tumbling has nothing to do with their taller bodies - gymnasts today are taller on average than they've been since the early seventies. Nina Derwael, who won the gold on bars at the Tokyo Olympics and has won 4 world medals on the event is 5'7" (170 cm). That would have been unheard of 20-30 years ago, when Svetlana Khorkina was considered a giant at 5'4" (162 cm). The slower tumbling was because the floor and beam didn't have springs in them and the vault springboards could barely even be considered a "springboard". If you'd ever set foot in a gymnastics gym you would know that the floor is bouncy, as is the beam. These gymnasts were basically competing on a concrete or hardwood floor with the equivalent of a wrestling mat or panel mat thrown over it. Also, they didn't have the almost 60 years of coaching/training experience that we benefit from now. Obviously every generation of coaches learns from the previous generation and builds upon it. There's so many techniques that have been scrapped even since I was a gymnast in the 90s - no decent coach would be training kids today the same way my coaches trained us. And this video is from a good 30+ years prior to that.

No you couldn't have. You wouldn't have had the same knowledge, the equipment was primitive, that was not a floor mat, just a cloth on wood and national championships and many workout gyms only had wooden floors. No trampoline takeoffs, no foam pits, no spotting belts. Primitive biomechanical knowledge. Most gymnasts had to work full time so they didn't get the same practice time. Huge oval bars that were wooden and broke regularly. They were products of their times as you would have been.

the innovations in the equipment has facilitated many of the skills possible today. No way anybody was going double backs on the hard gym floors we competed on in the 60's. Reuterboards we used on vault was essentially just a kinda springy wedge board- no way to get enough lift for much more than Yami's on vault.
@susielove60123 жыл бұрын
@@chocdave all true! I competed as a kid 1966 through 1970- my knees were shot at 12 from tumbling, (Springboards were just bent wood boards that gave a bit of lift) landing vaults on hard horsehair mats and gym floor for floor ex and vault runways.

Keep watching. You are describing the compulsory routine. In the optionals they were doing many somersaults and although not shown here two gymnasts did twisting somersaults. The floor was not a mat, just a thin carpet on wood and in smaller meets they didn't even have that. And in many gyms no floor mats either. Today they are on what is almost a trampoline with four inch springs.
