I buffed the FDNY in the 60s. Later to become a fire fighter ( not in FDNY)The super pumper was awesome to see in operation. The roar of the 2 stroke Diesel engine was deafening. Hearing protection was needed to be any where close. The street could be felt vibrating sometimes if you were close enough. If fed from fire hydrants often conventional engine companies were assigned to relay pump from a hydrant to one of the super pumper intakes. Multiple units would hook up like this from distant hydrants since one hydrant could not supply all the water required. The super pumper would in turn relay water to the fire scene . It’s far as I can remember one of the largest volume pumping incidents was indeed the Morgan station post office fire in 1967 as you mentioned. It was also used to supply water to an area of Jamaica Queens if I remember correctly when the water system failed there.. The longest relay pumping operation occurred in the co-op city development in the south Bronx where the super pumper relayed water for 7000 feet.

No offence, but your wrong on several facts. Gibbs already had the plan to make the Super Pumper before the SI fire. But there was no funding. The disaster just showed the need. The original plan was just for two apparatus, the Pumper and the Tender. But since they couldn't get all the hose on the tender, and the big hose reels concept didn't work the plan was altered to adding the three Sattelite units. There were enough hydrants in NY, but they couldn't supply enough water in periods off draught. There for the pumpers had to get water from a river, or Lake. That was the main reason for the pumper. Also the pump capacities you mention are not correct, i could deliver Volume, or Pressure, 8800 gpm at low pressure, or the half on high Pressure. Source: J. Calderone, FDNY Super Pumper
