I have a 1965 A-Code 289 Mustang. How you determined 6 degrees? I've read 10-12° initial advance is probably a good starting point for a 289.

When I was 16-17 and knew everything there was to know in the world - I was setting the timing on my 57 Chevy and the wire got caught by the fan. It yanked it out of my hand and plastic went flying all over the place. I least I did not get hurt. My dad made me buy him another timing light.

You checked one plug and never touched the points, unless you didn't show that part.
