1965 Ford Thunderbird Convertible
Vin: 5Y85Z170211
This 1965 Thunderbird says it all! Everything about this car is red hot from the body to the interior. About 6-8 Years ago in Oregon this car underwent a total restoration and has been driven delicately since then. The casting dates all match up with one another. This Thunderbird is a late '65 year car with '66 engine factory installed. Casting dates were in May and the car itself was built in June. Muscling this car is its original numbers matching 390ci 300hp V8 connected to a 3-Speed Ford Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. The electronic abilities for this car are amazing now and it was even more amazing in 1965. Can't you just imagine packing up the family to go to the beach and not even having to get out of your car to drop that top down and feel the wind in your hair. Well it's not too late, call us today and let VMS park your dream in your drive way!

I'm lucky I grew up in a time (was 17 in 1965) when cars like this one came out. Look at the quality of the interior and exterior. So much polished stainless steel, chrome, and die cast metal (dash, console, etc.), brushed aluminum. Not the cheap plastic chrome crap they have today. It was in the late '60s when all car manufacturers started cheapening the cars, using more plastic and light weight materials, decals instead of chrome plated die cast script, emblems and badges, etc. I really liked the interiors on the '64 thru '66 T-birds. I did, however, think the steering wheel could have been more elaborate.

I agree with you Troy on everything you said! You're right about cars getting cheapened in the late '60s. I was 17 in 1974 & early '75 when the T-Bird was basically a less expensive Mark IV Lincoln. The fun was pretty much gone in cars by then with convertibles being gone one of the sadder aspects. Still there were some beauty's. I always liked the Grand Prix and Monte Carlo of that era, and the 1977-'79 Cougar X-R7. So much nicer than the comparable T-Bird for those years. Anyhow, my Dad got me a used '69 Camaro in 1978 when I was 21. It was only a 6 cylinder but I didn't care. The thing is, the dashboard on the '69 Camaro was curling up at the top and had a lot of plastic there compared to the '67 & '68. To this day at car shows I see original, unrestored '67-'68 models with the dashboard still in beautiful condition. I told the owners about my '69 and they said that's another reason they like theirs a lot more. I think the first two were a little smaller, sleeker and more sports car like. The '69 is still the one "everybody wants". Oh well.

My parents had the next generation: 67 4-Door Bird (428) and 68 2 door Bird (429) ...drove them both to nearly 200K, which just didn't happen back in the day....Great cars...it helped they had a mechanic that kept them perfect and could fix anything....Both engines were beasts in their own way (428 was quiet and refined, 429 was a torque beast that left everyone in the dust). MIss those cars!

What I always liked about the '64-'66 T-Birds was the fact they were a beautiful blend of the 2nd and 3rd gen 'Birds but with a completely new and unique look all its own. It has a little more flavor of the Square Bird, but with much more modern styling, including the sculptured sides, less chrome, and no fins. The '65 was a nice refinement of the '64 with the new sequential taillights. I don't care for the '66 as much mainly because of the front end. The across-the-board taillights and new roof line (choice) partially previewed the '67-'68 models.

Anyone know what happened to the red or pinkish red early 60's T bird made for "Kookie", Gerald Lloyd Kookson of the TV Show, 77 Sunset Strip? The car probably never appeared on the show, but it did tour the Ford Dealers. I saw it in Omaha, the Ford Dealer in Benson, NE. The back seats were covered by what I call the "race covers" over the rear seats, which was probably removable. Another thing I think I remember about the car, is that it had 2 427 Ford engines. Anyone who has any information on what happened to that car, where it is, etc?

Its a beautiful car, but I would still like the Hardtop in a nice light blue color with the beautiful light blue interior and the darker blue dash. That car is perfect. The only problem with the 390 engines, they had a problem with the lifters always going on them, and then a new valve job with all new lifters and some time the cam also. I know, I went through it on my car. The returns holes on the engine always use to clog, I recommend using a real good Synthetic oil, like Amsoil or something.

Every Time I see this car, I had the hardtop version, I get emotional because it was the first car I ever owned (brought for $200.00) after entering the Army an getting stationed at Ft. Bragg. Used my reenlistment bonus to fix it up and take it home to New York and sold it for a $1000.00.
