It’s a mechanical gas gauge. So turning the key on has nothing to do with it. Good job. Enjoy watching the videos.

Thanks for the info. I haven't worked on these over 25 years. some things I forgot and others I'm learning fast now that we have all this KZbin info. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for doing this one. I am doing the same thing to my 1963 with a tank also from jbugs. However, I tested the tank before installing it by putting in some gas and pinching off the outlet hose. It leaked around the nut holding the nipple in, still working on a fix. You might want to keep an eye on it when you fill your tank. (also back after 25 plus years with these cars and re-learning a lot.)

Glad to hear I'm not the only on back at it. Sometimes I ask myself why did this to myself until I actually see my fix work then it's totally worth it. The tank I got is doing great. I've been checking for leaks and seems to be holding up. Love the 63. I had one back in the days.

I have a 64 and I have leaking around the nut as well. I’ve replaced the nut, nipple, etc, with a kit from Wolfsburg West, but it still leaks. Did you find a fix? This is going to be the death of me. Lol

@@chadb1176 Yes, I did. I wound up brushing some sort of perma-gasket on the threads of the nipple where the big nut screws on. I did some research and people said to use the type that doesn't harden all the way and to make sure it's rated for fuel resistance, something about aviation quality. I don't have the stuff in front of me but it worked, no leaking. I'll hunt it down in my garage and get back to you when I find it if that would help. Good luck, I had a 64 back in the day, lovely car. Got stolen and broke my heart. Is your tank new as well or just the kit from WW?

@@sunroof6430THANK YOU for the reply. I’m banging my head against the wall on this one. I would greatly appreciate any additional detail you can send my way. My wife might be getting close to telling me to get rid of it altogether due to the gas smell in the garage. I purchased it a year ago. The gas tank isn’t the original, but came with the car. I installed just the nipple kit thing from WW.

@@chadb1176 I used Permatex Motoseal Gasket Maker, Fuel resistant #29132 from the auto parts store, small tube. My original gas tank had an old repair at the bottom with a pinhole leak so I replaced it with one from Jbugs. The fitting leaked which is why I used the sealer, no problems since. Also don't forget to check the vapor line attached to the filler neck, it vents fumes from the tank. Slades VW Beetle youtuber has a video about it and replacing the gas tank. New tank is not terribly expensive and easy to install. Good luck and hope you get it sorted.

how did you take the fuel gage off the tank ?

You look the cap off the sending unit and disconnect from there.
