My dad bought us our first 25 or 26 inch Admiral tv in 1971. It had a great picture, but it broke down about 2 times a year. The tv repair guy would come and replace a part or 2 usually in about 15-20 minutes, and was good to go again for another 6-8 months.

"The candlelight TV repair series". Every color set from this era provokes memories of Saturday mornings with Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, and Yosemite Sam, which are most likely the cause of the successive CRT replacements. Obtaining a Zenith 24MC32 , with a decent 21FJP22, and flyback, has been on my bucket list for a very long time.

Danny "Squirrel" Washington was the TV repairman who visited about every 6 months, to do "the two tubes and a condenser dance", with an older Admiral B&W set. Ten years later, he'd drop off all of the solid state and hybrid stuff at my "garage shop", because he never learned the theory. There was a bit of a transitional problem in those days.

There's a pretty good chance that you did. I still remember Cronkite's ear-to-ear smile throughout the entire event, and would bet money that it was Walter's way of saying "we made it, thanks President Kennedy".

I didn't know any old color Admiral sets survived. Like you said, these are unique, "Admiral did their own thing". You should do a follow-up video showing the repair of the voltage regulation, the sound, bringing the picture in, and maybe the cabinet repair too. It's a cool set. Definitely not something I'd go at with a pickaxe.

You caught the fire works, so nice. At 12:27 you can see a small arc in the damper tube when you touched the control at the back. Even tubes in the hinged control panel, bad design.

I had one of these Admiral tilt out control panel sets from brand new (model LGS5511 from 1965) and can accurately comment on it. Had the set for almost 20 years. And no the wires did not break off aside from the antenna leads. Admiral blew the strain relief on the antenna leads only. I felt the tilt out panel was quite convenient because you could stand to adjust the set plus all the controls were right there instead of divers locations. That control behind the contrast control you can’t seem to figure out on your set is a 3 step sharpness control. It went “SOFT”, “NORMAL“, and “SHARP” . Basically standard on all Admiral color sets of the mid sixties. And that COLOR FIDELITY control that always seems to baffle you is the B&W shading or color temperature control. It MUST be centered when setting the screens for grey scale otherwise you will not get it to work right. The control sets the grey scale from sepia to a blueish tone. The control worked great on color shows to richen the flesh tones when turned all the way to the left (CCW) during a color broadcast. Exclusive to Admiral. 😊

As you probably know, the later RCA tube sets and their earlier solid state sets had a tilt-out control bin and I didn't care for them (especially the models with slider controls). If you sneezed too hard while standing close to the set, the picture would go crazy. At least in the RCA's, the tuner was stationary.

I live in the UK and way back in 1971 we got a huge cabinet floor standing colour tv withdoors that closed when not in use. It had a 26" tube and was manufactured by Baird,which I seem to remember was part of the Thorn EMI group. Can anyone else rememberthese big tv sets. Admiral TV's had fallen really far by the time I started working on Televisions in the 90's. I remember one Admiral that if you unplugged the TV while it was on, it would erase the EPROM. The company had to send us this box from the factory to re-program the EPROM. Didn't solve the problem that when you unplug the TV while on, it erases everything. It was only a small 15" TV, so it was portable, so it was common to be unplugged and moved around. I think this was the last television that I worked on, to carry the Admiral name. I haven't seen anything with he Admiral name in years, not television's anyway.

People must have really loved their sets back in the day to go through the trouble of tube replacement. I wonder how much the bill was? I've owned many color CRTs over the years and never once replaced a picture tube. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever had to pay anyone to repair a television.

The "color fidelity" control was likely a color temperature adjustment. The only other set (other than the one in this video) I've seen that extra control on was a 1969 Sears set that a relative had that I last saw around 1986 or 1987. I remember it being called "Chromix" on that set and was in addition to the usual color and tint. I imagine these were quite high end really nice TVs back in the day.

Hi Shango, re the hinged control and your assumption it was a bad design, like anything the execution of the design is critical. Stress to jacket and stranded cable during a bending moment was well understood at the time. Recently NASA conducted tests on cable bending at cryogenic temperatures as there was no data there. I could have told them what would happen...)) Here the bending radius is very low, stranded and with appropriate gauge - as long as it's designed with a bit of thought it should last almost forever as far as the cable goes. Like you say slamming it shut is going to be biggest problem, after the catch breaks and it's repeatedly whacked... but that is when owned by Neanderthals and doesn't count.

With that high voltage creeping up, and the fact that there was no lead shielding on the high-voltage rectifier tube and the back of the CRT, I shudder to think about the *extremely dangerous* levels of X-radiation to which Shango may have exposed himself, since he was *very close* to the back of the set. It would have been advisable to bring a properly-calibrated Geiger counter, set to highest sensitivity, to assess the possible danger before proceeding.
@jerrycarriera86487 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing! I remember reading in Consumer Reports back in the mid 60s that Admiral, Olympic and Packard Bell emitted the highest level of radiation. They used to test for X-Rays back then. Hopefully, no damage to either of the guys!
@bobweiss86827 жыл бұрын
Even under worst case malfunction conditions, the X-ray levels from a color TV wouldn't approach "extremely dangerous", for any reasonable interpretation of those words. The horizontal oscillator and damper tubes pose no X-ray hazard AT ALL. The tubes that caused the X-ray scare of the 1960s were the HV rectifier, shunt regulator, and the CRT itself. The April 1968 edition of Popular Science had excellent coverage of the issue, and it is available via Google Books.
@chetpomeroy13997 жыл бұрын
Well, I am relieved to hear that that what you've said was true, Bob. As you are aware, the techs who worked on these color sets, both out in the field and in the shop, were exposed to X-radiation on a daily basis for several years; there may have been some sort of cumulative effect. It's likely considerably less than the exposure experienced by hospital X-ray technicians, who are required to wear lead vests for protection. Thanks for the Popular Science reference!
@cttv901087 жыл бұрын
that should be our next video. Vintage color tv to x Ray machine conversion.
@chetpomeroy13997 жыл бұрын
I've had a look at that article, by W. Stevenson Bacon, which in my mind seems to downplay the exposure hazard, referring to such emissions as "weak" X-rays. The safety standards for exposure to doses of ionizing X-radiation 50 years ago are likely much less stringent than the safety standards that exist today, since we know much more now about what happens to people who receive frequent, long-term exposure. Additionally, if Popular Science accepted ad revenue from, and/or the author of that article had some sort of economic relationship with, one or more television manufacturers, this would cast a shadow on the objectivity of that article, in my opinion.
