My Dad had a 1966 regular hard top, that he bought new. His was candy apple red, with the 289 V8, and manual transmission. I still remember riding in it when I was a kid. 64.5 to 66 are my favorite years. Those cars still look sharp today.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw this video! I had this very same car years ago. Signal flare red with the pony interior and pistol grip door handles and sold it because I fell on hard times back in the 80's. Damn this is the only car I ever regret selling. Brought back some good memories.

My brother and I bought a '65 'A' code(289 4-brl 4-speed 225 hp)that we ended up rebuilding with the 'K' code cam and lifters. But instead of the mechanical advance single point distributor that came in the 'k', we opted for the MA dual point that came in the Shelby. Tossed the Autolight carb for a 600 Holley under an Edelbrock Tarantula medium rise intake man. Some Douglas headers. Schaffer aluminum flywheel. Electric fuel pump at the tank. Borg Warner Super T-10 trans. The only time we dragged it at a track she turned a 14.61 Not bad for a $600 car in 1970

Had the same car. Wasn't a GT but had all the GT items except the light bar. The front disc brakes were awesome! Put an Accel dual point, torker 2 intake, blackjack alumacote headers,650 double pumper, solid lift cam, 11-1 pistons, bigger valves and screw in studs. Damn I miss that car!

@@freakindawgen ours was a hardtop coupe in Ivy Green with the optional styled mag wheels and a rally pac(clock and tach) on the steering column we bought used in 1970 for $600. We sold the wheels and got Krager slotted mags, painted it Lemans Blue('70 Corvette color)and went from there. When we twisted the output shaft in half we went to the Ford dealer and ordered a new one but when we got it all back together and tried to connect the drive shaft, the splines between the yoke and the shaft wouldn't line up. So we take it all apart figuring the guy gave us the wrong part and go back to Ford. After hearing what happened he looked at me and asked if our transmission had 10 bolts on the TOP inspection plate. And I said yes. He said you don't have a 65 Mustang, you have a '64 1/2 Mustang. Last thing he said to us was, you have one of the first 2500 Mustangs ever built. Don't ever sell that car. I wish I still had it

so roughly one percent of Mustangs were K codes, also all GT cars had the suspension mods, except the 9 inch rear, I believe it was a 225 $ dollar option to get the GT, which included discs and the bigger bar and shocks, and of course the stripes and fog lamp, I was lucky enough to own two . also all GT cars had either the A code or K code, four barrel carb motors

Nice car. I had a ‘65 GT 2+2, guardian blue. A code 4 spd, factory GT. I installed new seat buns & a blue/white pony interior before selling it. It ended up in the Netherlands, watched the begin of a body off restore, then website went down. The Kelsey-Hayes wheel was my fav, but this came with stock hubcaps. My recall is that red stripe tires were not available in 65, they showed up later as single stripes, an extra cost option.

The 1966 K code fastback was also the car that Shelby pulled off the Ford line to build the GT 350. The 66 GT-H was also a K code. The 289 callouts on the front fender was different from other 289’s; see if you can spot the difference. Awesome cars, especially the GT 350’s. K codes bring good $$ at auctions.

Recently purchased an original (rust free) unrestored '66 GT Fastback with pony interior. 6R09A______ All numbers match, engine block, 3 body stamps, door tag. It will receive a mechanical and electrical OEM replacment, but no restoration. Previous owner owned it in Southern California since 1984. It is Signalflare Red.

I used to work with a young lady (My gosh, that makes me sound old!) who had a 289 ‘Stang - I don’t believe that it was a K-code model though coincidentally enough, her Pony was red too. I envied the Hell out of her! Fast forward, 15+ years later I bought my ‘91 L.X. 5.0 - That’s a badass story, for another time! :€)

I may be wrong, but didn't the 1966 Mustang drop the horizontal chrome bars either side of the corrall in the grille? At first glance this car looks like a 1965 model from the front. Or is it because it had the fog lamp set?

peter charles: It was the two vertical bars on the corral that went away for the '66 GT w/fogs. The horizontal bars stayed. The cars w/o fogs for '66 had no bars at all on the corral. The pattern of the grille also changed from a small hexagonal pattern in '65 to the "egg crate" rectangular boxes for '66.

The carburetor is not 600cfm it is more like 415cfm. The crankshaft is the same as the standard 289 but the ones that were used in the HP289 were selected for hardness/nodularity. A real HP 289 one is marked with a dab of red paint close to where a small place has been polished and brinell hardness tested.
@Miatacrosser
@Miatacrosser 5 жыл бұрын
That's why we all knew to throw that crappy Autolight carb away and put a 600-650 Holley on them. This was what Ford should've done in the first place.
@DaveMcLain
@DaveMcLain 5 жыл бұрын
@@Miatacrosser I've done back to back testing on the dyno between the Autolite and a Holley on a 289 making around 275 horsepower and the difference was less than 10 HP. So for an engine of this size and RPM it wasn't a big deal and it was probably cheaper for Ford.

GOOD info... I know too that the K-code Mustang 289 High Performance engine was equipped with cylinder heads that included larger intake and exhaust values... But, I've never heard any comment made on the valve sizes, G-code vs A-code vs K-code.
@DaveMcLain
@DaveMcLain 5 жыл бұрын
No. The heads had the same size valves that were used in the regular 289's including the ones with a 2V carburetor. HP289 heads are different castings than the regular 289 head. They have the same exact chambers and ports but they have cast in bosses that are machined into spring locators on the top of the head.

"The code in the vin, of the fifth position, is the letter 'K', and THAT means..." and that means, its worth about twenty-thousand more than a typical GT, and people will be tripping over themselves trying to buy it. Yeah its good to be 'K'ing ;)

As a former 70' BOSS 429 in grabber blue owner, I can say that many of us regret selling our Stangs. None more than me, but the girlfriend bugged me until I sold it for a 944. Yes, she didn't last and I still recall taking that BOSS out on a sunny day and ripping down the road. I also was lucky enough to own a red 64' GTO w white convertible and white interior w a 389 tri-power. The GTO started the muscle car movement, as they put a big motor in a small car. I love Mustangs, but even the awesome K code car could not touch that screaming GTO. Don't get me wrong, as the fastbacks were great looking cars, but the Mustang didn't start out to compete with the top dogs. Right now, I am looking to acquire an early year fastback w at least the GT package, as the K codes are extremely hard to find. The search is half the fun, but I may have found an awesome Caspian blue 65' GT. Such fun..

@DAJD the gto DID NOT start the muscle car industry. Go back to 1949-1957, and there are plenty of large displacement and/or powerful engines stuffed into lighter weight cars. The Rambler Rebel, Olds 88, Chrysler Saratoga and C-300, and Studebaker golden hawk all predated the gto by at least seven years.

I'm pretty certain that the 289 HipO had 4-bolt mains; crankshaft is bolted with 4 bolts caps.Stock 289 uses 2-bolt caps. I have the 66 coupe in Signal Flair Red built in San Jose!
@DaveMcLain
@DaveMcLain 5 жыл бұрын
No. The HP 289 block is identical to all other 289 blocks of the same year. The only difference is the main caps that were installed. They bolt to the block with the same bolts but the caps are thicker. They are just about identical to the caps on a Mexican 302 block.
