Wow!!! I couldn't belive it when I saw your video and I who I saw. At time frame 1:21 you see a young man run into the frame and then at 1:31 you see him turn around and look in the direction of the person filming as he helps to tie the fairy to the doc. His name is Fuluasou Ma'alaelu. When I found your video I show my husband, it blew him away he couldn't belive what he was watching a very moving moment for him, for a slip second I saw a little boy was watching his hero do his work, it bought tears to his eyes to see his beloved father alive again. Thank you

The flag day festivities was always an event to look forward to… happy days and the Halecks theater was a real treat back then. I saw Mary Poppins at that theater…. I truly enjoyed it.

At 4:55 is during the Flag Day celebration in American Samoa and I see the old Police Band and old Aua Band. This must be around early 1970s. I may be mistaken but at 6:40 is the Afono Band lead by that man Salele'a. I still remember the Afono Dancing Band with a simple lava lava and white t-shirt or shirtless with flower ulas with their skins radiant shine in the sun because of the traditional coconut & monsooi oil.

I remember the bands from Vaiusu village, Mapusaga High school, I think Leone village, and I even marched in a couple parades with my scout troop.

Whoever captured this, I just want to say thank you very much for this piece of treasure! This is Samoa (Upon) traveling in the late 60s. The government of Samoa filled most of the land expanding its boundaries. Sea erosions was another caused of many shoreline changes. This is Samoa that you don't see now in 2021.

Hello James. I'm afraid the original photographer's name is lost to history. I saved this film from obscurity a few years ago by purchasing it out of an estate sale. I'm so delighted by the overwhelmingly positive response you and your fellow Samoans have give to the reel. It's being preserved for future generations. I hope to visit your beautiful islands one day. Thank you. Francois, Vernon, BC, Canada

@@ReelLifeCanada My and husband I love watching the old movies of Western Samoa, so we where really happy to find this one not knowing what or who we would see. At minuets 1.26 - 1.32 you see a man running to the boat, my husband couldn't believe it and neither could when said "thats my Dad" the man in the footage his name is Fuluasou Ma'alaelu and he was the Captain of the ship, there is another man that is standing directly behind Fuluasou when his is leaning over pulling the rope this is my Husband's Uncle, Fuluasou's older brother Pesefeamanaia Enesili Ma'alaelu he was the first mate. They have both passed on now, but it was beautiful to see them doing something they loved so much together again. Thank you

@@alemapyam5890 I'm so honoured! What a wonderful discovery. I'm so happy your husband spotted his father and uncle. Amazing when you think of what it took for this to occur, this film is part of my collection and I live 5400 miles/8700 km distance away in Canada.

Up to about 4:50, those were from Upolu then Western Samoa. I do remember traveling between the islands with my grand parents on those boats (rough and slow).

My wife and I were there as volunteer teachers in 1988-89 and again in 2013-14. I could add a lot of subscripts, but the most important was the Flag Day celebration with floats and bands from different villages that occurs every Spring. It celebrates the raising of the American Flag in 1901, when the USA became their protectorate. Villages still send dance and singing ( siva o' pese) groups to perform in honor of their relationship as Americans. And they also compete in 47-manned Fatasi boats into Pago Harbor, for the most coveted honor of the Islands. Stan C.

The 1966 hurricane in Am. Samoa was a nightmare. Thank God for His mercy and grace upon my family throughout such horrible ordeal. I was 8 years of age at the time.🙏♥️

I enjoyed the flag day festivities, it was a special day to look forward to because there were colorful foats, multiple village and high school bands, singing, and dancing. I don’t see that in today’s flag day event.

I think the first four minutes and fifty one seconds was in neighboring Samoa. Used to be known as Western Samoa before 1997.

Some of the film is not American Samoa (Tutuila island). It looks like Western Samoa (Upolu or Savaii), but the rest of the film is American Samoa.

My mistake. I had a feeling there might be some errors in my assessment, having not been to either yet, I assumed it was American Samoa. Thanks for sorting that point out. Cheers!
