The TR4A cars initially came with Zenith Stromberg carburetors, but near the end of production the carburetors were switched backed to SU’s. This video brings back a lot of memories especially with all the cowl shake and steering wheel moving around going over bumps. The only thing this day dream is missing is feeling the wire wheels flexing going around hard turns. Always respect the drive.

Wire wheels flexing in the corners, that sounds just slightly less freaky than knock-off hubs. What kind of sensation was that next to basic suspension compression?

Tedward, Thank You sooo much for that trip down memory lane! My second car was a 64 TR4. Bought it in 74 when I just turned 19. It too had the steering shaft rattle and the window rattle as you went over bumps...but what a fun car! It also had the weak 3rd gear syncro! LOL This video brought back many great memories for me! I've always been impressed with how Triumph was able to exist and develop their cars for as long as they did on a budget that was most likely less than GM spent on the Corvette's interior in that era. Also, it's interesting how offset the steerimg wheel is from the pedals.

It helped that they changed so little in the cars. The TR6 was still using the same chassis as the TR2 - an old fashioned steel ladder frame. The Spitfire/GT6 was actually a slightly more modern car.

I live in rural northwest Connecticut where it can get brutally cold, especially with the windchills. It’s not unusual to see people jogging in shorts and t-shirts in the dead of winter. I’m not sure if that means someone is a “tough New Englander”, or if it means they’re insane.

Can't resist a spring fever drive with a TR4...I had one that had the letter 'U' missing, so I called it the "Trimph". Enjoyed that car! It had some get up & go and was fun on curvy roads

My Dad had a really nice TR4 when myself and my sisters were 11 and 12 respectively. He would drive us from KY to Gatlinburg, TN. Yes two small kids will fit behind the seats, in a time before seatbelt laws. Some of the greatest memories of my childhood I will ever have were in that car.

There’s a guy at my college who has a TR4 that he takes out when the weather is good. makes my miata look like an SUV when I park next to it. Nearing the end of the spring semester last year, he would come with it with the top down every day, park it with the top off, just enjoying and basking in sunny new england glory. I’ll miss seeing that little guy when I graduate.

You are spot on about these cars being easy to work on. Bought a Triumph GT6 10 years ago as my first car. It provides plenty of learning experiences for a novice wrencher, but parts are generally cheap and attainable and most mechanical components are very accessible. Couldn’t be happier with it

Bought my 1st car in 1974, a used ‘67 BRG TR4A-IRS. I was a sucker for the styling and drove top-down the majority of the time, unless it was raining. It had been used hard, later bought a TR250. Great memories. Learned to carry cans of motor oil, a jug of water, can of stop leak & all replaced electrical components in the boot. Never got stranded.

Great video, as per usual. You've summed up the attraction of small sports cars perfectly. I used to drive my Caterham 7 with the top down most of the time, all year round, despite British weather being extremely variable one minute to the next. 😁 Driving "raw" cars without any power steering, ABS, ESP or traction control and little regard for NVH levels, makes driving such a visceral experience, and makes people etter drivers too.

I love the styling of just about any Triumph (Michelotti) and especially the Italia which to me looks like a baby Maserati. There is a guy in the NJ/E. PA area that my partner and I see at Carlisle Imports or the Brits on the Beach in Ocean Grove. I just stand around drooling at the Italia. But after seeing your video the engine is pretty non-dramatic compared to say our Fiat Spider (which is laid up long story) where the little twin cam really sings. But this Tr4A is so much sweeter than an MGB in every way. Thanks Ted: always something to learn. Ps. I hope your drama abated. My week was filled with it including a tense Department meeting. ThankGod for weekends,lol.❤

That stripe across the bonnet was indigenous to the Triumph 250, not the TR4. Love the Weber carburetors, also not stock, should be SUs Fun cars, for sure.

I bought a '62 TR4 in '81. The Webbers def better than the SU's. My spoke hubs had little painted "TR" globes. Candy Apple red/black leather int. Chick magnet.

Subjective but this TR looks original spec except for the wheels, which detract from the overall appearance imo a set of period Ro-Styles would be a more logical choice. My first car was a Vitesse convertible with a 2.5 six on twin SU's, swapped from a 2500 Estate.

Have a friend who has one in red. They are great cars. That engine sounds like a sports cam and with dual Webers it probably is better than stock horsepower and torque. P.S. It is worth changing from the old hood latch system to new gas struts. I did on my MGB for the same reason.
