Ed Sullivan started as a newspaper sports colummist and then switched to report on entertainment in a newspaper column labeled "Toast of the Town," which became the title of his TV variety show on CBS in 1948.

Ed Sullivan was a nationally known newspaper columnist before he began on television with his shows "Toast of the Town" and then the "Ed Sullivan Show". For decades he brought entertainment to the country, and helped to launch the careers of untold numbers of performers across all genres. Sunday nights on CBS gave us his show, What's My Line & Candid Camera along with various other shows over the years. There will never be a resurgence of this kind of television or the values that our society once enjoyed.

Ed Sullivan was a Sunday night staple. He had wonderful guest performers whether from Europe or cutting edge. He introduced Elvis and the Beatles.

I watched the Ed Sullivan show when I was growing up, one of my favorite shows. My mom let me stay up even mom let me stay up, bed time was usually 8 o'clock. They all dressed so elegantly then. The dress did change not long after that, it become more casual.

Watching her here, it's hard to believe pretty Phyllis Newman has left the house. I was sorry to learn of her recent passing.

Phyllis Newman reminds me in appearance of Marlo Thomas, who starred in "That Girl" back in 1966.
