Good job. It's important to note that the main caps are not interchangeable - they must go in the same location and orientation that they came from. Don't be afraid of using solvent (paint thinner) for cleaning the grime - especially after sanding or filing.

I'm glad to see you placed the original bearing back with the slight wear mark on it. I found this slight wear as well on some bearings when I pulled the main caps, and I'm led to believe on the internet that it mandates replacement, like, right now. Which is easier said than done when one doesn't mind turning a weekend job into a full engine rebuild and has all the tools, money and time in the world to do it. I like to think that there are a zillion cars driving around with slightly worn bearings that people don't know about because they never got a chance to check it.

You really did your homework! Awesome to see you persevere through those issues. I’ve done this job before and I can tell you it’s never easy especially on your back with no lift. Keep at it! Hopefully you’ll inspire more younger mechanics like us to keep these gems alive! 👍🏼😎

I'm glad you didn't get any file shards in your eyes when it snapped. I know they are not stylish, but safety glasses are nice to have on. Hopefully you don't have to again, but if your taking off main caps, next time loosen the bolts a bit and tap the cap from the left and right side with a rubber mallet till it drops onto the bolts.

Nice job, just did this on a friends 66 moosetang. The engine builder did not clock the rear main seal, no leaks now. Maybe it was the camera but that looked way more than 3/8 of an inch. Did not have to loosen any of the other main caps, just use plenty of oil putting it in. Cheers to you for doing it on the floor we had it on a lift.👍

This video is EXCELLENT on how to do this and rather than making it look easy Kat's video showed all the little details you need to know to do this job... AND the things that can go wrong. (I use hardened air wrench sockets with a long breaker bar to remove the main cap bolts.) Well done Kat!

It’s great fun watching you discover the how, and what’s needed, to do these repairs, takes me back a few years to when I was learning how to do similar stuff (including starters and oil pan gaskets). I laughed out loud when you used necessary ‘plumbing words’ when things went awry. The only suggestion I would make (from many experiences laying on my back under vehicles and a ‘few’ years teaching HS science) is to wear your safety glasses ALWAYS when you’re working over your head and above your face. Getting junk in your eyes is NO fun.

2:33 You don't know the word fun until you had to crawl trogh the hole behind the back seats from a Ford torino with a sunburn all over your shoulders and sunstroke to get the keys wich your Father forgot in there. And you search and search until you notice the keys aren't even in there. The keys leyd on the desk in the garage. And I was staying home for the rest of the week.

Not an easy task with the motor in the car and no lift, many people would have pulled the motor. reminds me when i was in my 20's driving through Europe on the side of the road changing a rod bearing on my lotus 7 after tearing up the Italian mountains a little too well. my daughter is only 1 at the moment but i hope she grows up to love working on things with her dad in the shop.

Definitely looking forward to more content on KZbin from you. My two cents are that you should try to find a way to get consistent sound volume throughout the video. I'm thinking maybe a low profile wearable microphone of some sort. The other cent is to be prepared for your comments section, I'm certain it's going to get wild and downright rotten at times. Eye protection. Not to sound like THAT party spoiler, but it's wise if you use appropriate glasses for your eyes. Rusty dust with heavens know what crap (including metal filing/tiny chips) might fall in small amounts on your face and in your eyes. Just use them, safety first, less to no regrets later.
