1967 Oldsmobile 98 Junkyard Find. Another bitter sweet one for me as i like me some Olds. This 67 Olds Ninety Eight was probably top of the line back in 1967. It was fully decked out with options. and from the looks of it, she had been sitting for a very long time. I found a small log book that ends in the 1970's. She even had a Leer Jet Eight track player. I had no idea Lear Jet made those things back in the day. Under the hood she was sporting the mighty Rocket 425 Big Block with a 4 barrel carburetor.

In 1967 they really gave the Olds a good dose of Toronado styling in the front fenders. Olds 98s were amazing cars.

Yes, 425 V8 Oldsmobile engine. The 455 came out in 1968, so this is the last year of the 425 V8. The 98 models were built in Lansing, MI. The "M" in the VIN number means Lansing, MI assembly. This was Oldsmobile's top of the line car in 1967, you could even get this in a convertible from what I remember. The engine had about 360 horsepower back then (but it was rated for gross HP). This was probably a beauty when it was new, but it's obvious it's been sitting since 1978, most likely in a field or under a tree.

Actually the 98 LS (luxury sedan) was the top model but came only as a four door. They stopped covertible production of 98s in 1971 or 72. They were then only available in the olds 88 line.

I was with my grandmother the day she took delivery of her brand new ‘67 Delta 88 2-door Holiday Coupe (Gold/black vinyl roof) from Oge Oldsmobile in Tyler, Tex.. the styling was very similar to this 98 .. it brings back a lot of memories. I sat in the back seat as the salesman showed her how to operate all the accessories - she had traded a ‘64 Chevrolet Impala 4 door hardtop so the Delta was certainly a step up for her and she was so proud of that car. I enjoy your videos .. I used to go out to several yards to collect parts for my cars too.. I’m mainly a Mopar man but enjoy the older models like this one and imagine what they looked like coming down the assembly line. This one has front cornering lamps which were fairly rare and look to be in fair condition - the chrome bezels may be corroded as this car looks like it may have sat for years in a shaded moist environment. Hope you were able to harvest the the parts you wanted - I’m particularly interested in wagons but love all these old cars. The sales brochures that detail all the great colors this car could be ordered in are along with vinyl roof and pinstriping colors are available on ebay - many different shades of blue and Aqua were popular in 1967.

We have 2 1966 versions of these. One is a hardtop like this one and the other is the top of the line LS. Engine is a 425 CID, 365 horse with single exhaust. They are indeed a very stately - and very powerful - automobile. Our LS is the same color theme called Ocean Mist. It has all the same options as does this one, in addition power vent windows, AM/FM radio and cruise control. The front seat back has pull handles and a lit vanity mirror for the rear seat passengers. Those parts you showed would fetch decent prices if collected off the car! Cornering lights even like both of ours! Thank you for posting!

The 1966 to 1969 98 Pillored Luxury Sedans were my favorite years and models. Bought my aunt's 1969 Luxury Sedan in 1972 when she bought a 1973 98 Regency. Both beauties. Thanks for the tour of that junkyard find. It's great to reminisce especially this year. PS. I was always fascinated by the snout, as I called it, on the 67 88 and 98 model front end. .

@@ClassicRideSociety you will have to check the valve lifter angle and lifter bore diameter. There are 2 sizes on both. Crane cams does make cams for the 39 degree and 45 degree lifter bore degree angles. The lifter bore sizes are 2 different ones as well. They can be bored out and brushed as well. I would suggest doing some internet research as well here. getting Modello's oil galley kit will help your oiling system here. The Oiling system will also be a problem.

Trim tag is 06A for first week of June 1967 production, 67 is for 1967, 8439 would be 4 door Holiday sedan, LAN is for Lansing, MI assembly, the rest of that line is a body number. I know the K is for Turquoise paint which it surely has on the lower part of the car, the C is for the upper color of white, which makes sense based on what we see. E should be Soft Ray tinted glass and since this is an AC car, that makes sense, Y might be Deluxe seat belts (possibly color keyed), S should be power trunk release, O is chrome separator for two tone paint, which makes sense since we have "K-C" for paint, that would denote it's two different colors, I think F denotes an outside LH remote mirror, E I believe is AC, T might be rear mounted power antenna, R for rear seat speaker possibly. VIN is 3 for Oldsmobile, 8439 is for 4 door Holiday sedan, 7 is for the 1967 model year, M is for Lansing MI assembly, and the rest is the production sequence.

...well done vid cam and commentary CRS...;-) ...tho the passage of time now readily showing on this vintage 1967 Old 98 Sport Sedan easy to see it was more than a plain base 98 with factory options like tilt-telescope three spoke steering wheel with the nice GM Variable Ratio Saginaw power steering mounted on the other end of steering column, factory AC, six-way power seat and those not too commonly seen side turn lamps on front fenders which were optional ...both of those side turn lamps appear in damaged and still have intact lenses...1967 was last year for the 425 CID Olds Rocket V-8 which had seen a three year 1965 to 1967 run...1964 being last year for the Olds 394 and last year for the older style GM Hydramatic with Reverse to the far right on gear selector of the 1950's era Park N D S L R dash gear selector / indicator layout...for 1965 the superbly functional, dependable and well constructed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 with new bigger 425 V8 would be in the Olds 98's ...the 1967 big " full sized " Oldsmobiles had some nice 1966 Olds Toronado derived styling cues and lines ...very smooth sheet metal contouring along sides and out back with the 67 grille much better defined and styled compared to the 65's and 66's ...the 1968 Olds 98's carried over much of the 1967 Olds 98 interior, side and tail layouts but had more conservative front end and grille ...1967 and 1968 big full sized Olds had very well done dash panels, instrumentation and detailing...lots of real metal, very well done " fake wood inlays " and real metal AC vents...1969 Olds had lots more plastic interior usage and less sporty design theme ...I once owned a couple of high end Olds 98 Luxury Sedans ( more luxurious inside than this junkyard queen 98 ;) ) and a 1967 triple black 98 convertible that was optioned with power vent wings, power door locks, factory installed AC , factory GM Delco 2 box AM-FM stereo radio and those rare side turn lamps on the front fenders....that was a very nice drop top Olds 98 to drive + go for a ride in + was very deluxe smooth and fast ...1967 was 1st year for twin brake cylinders with separated front/rear brake lines for all GM cars and it was a firsthand experience for me to know they could fail and leave you with only 1/2 of braking capacity which if unexpected could/would result in unforseen Titanic like moments of panic stoked collision(s) ...that may likely be why this Olds 98 has that bent in beak and was last on the road in 1978...;-) ...who wanted to spend some money fixing a rusting out 10 year old car with bad brakes and a thirst for ethyl premium gas in 1978 when easier to junk it and get another car? Not. Too. Many. ...fun to watch and listen to vid CRS ....;-)

I believe this is the standard 98 four door hardtop. There was a model even above this one with a different top that had a center pillar but the windows were unframed just like the hardtop. These were callled "LS" models for "Luxury Sedan" and they were practically Fleetwood Cadillacs. Incredible interiors. Olds 98s were not inexpensive cars and were only a small step down in price and prestige from the Cadillac. People who could afford Cadillacs often bought 98s because they were a little less showy.

Best part of this Olds 98 is it was the last year for the Olds 425 Super Rocket that has 10.5 to 1 compression and I think it was 375 or 390hp in the Starfire, Jetstar I & Toronado right out of the box ! Add to that all the 425s from 1965 to 67 all came with forged steel cranks & rods as did all the 330s from 64 to 67 as well. The Olds 442 /400 & 425s as well as the small block 330s are with out question the most powerful motors in the Oldsmobile line up as all the 455s all had old nasty cast iron cranks & rods that limited RPM to under 5,800 rpm ( except for the very rare 1968 T-35 package 68 Toronado I think there was like 8 of them built with a forged crank for 68 ) GRAB that motor ! stuck or not and hold on to that Q jet as thats the correct one and there HARD as hell to find !!!!

@@ClassicRideSociety What are your plans for the 425 ? Rebuild ? was it stuck ? Keep in mind the valve seats in the stock 67 heads are not hardened for this crap unleaded gas we run today and can't be run on unleaded fuel very long before the exhaust valves burn out . Also the valve trains in 425s from the factory are the weak link in them. A complete valve train replacement is a wise move as most of the time they get excessive ware on cam lobes, & lifters plus rockers & rocker stands & bolts get wore as well. I been building Olds motors that hold up for decades when others try it and fail. A Olds motor is not a Chevy and have to be built differently ( Clearances are different ) and if you go by the factory specks it will be to tight and be a dog or have over heating issues. A few things have to be done differently then with most other GM motors to get the rockets to fly. We campaign a 82 big tire cutlass with a flat tappet cam 66 Olds 330 that goes 9:60s at 121mph in the 1/4 mile on the NO-2 juice and goes through the traps at 8,800 rpm with 6:14 rear gears. Been running it for 11 seasons with no real issues other then fresh rings & timing chains every 3ed season.

A reel to reel player in a1967 autoradio? What? That was luxury.
@joe6096
@joe6096 5 жыл бұрын
The reel to reel was vacuum tube. By 1967 all electronics were solid state. So this recorder was not part of the car.
@srfrg9707
@srfrg9707 5 жыл бұрын
Joey D That's not true. Grundig produced the tube amplified TK23 from 1963 to 1967. What's true is "transistorised" ou "solid state" was a strong marketing argument by 1967 and therefore tape recorders with tube amps where hard to sell. This could explain that the manufacturer had stocks to get rid of and looked at other markets such as... car equipment. Or schools and universities for language labs. And by the way, the communist block continued to produce valve amps and tape recorders long after 1967 and until the collapse of the USSR.
@joe6096
@joe6096 5 жыл бұрын
This is America and that’s an Oldsmobile. What the fuck does the USSR have to do with this? Tube electronics would not have been available when that car was built. What I am saying is that the tape player was NOT an accessory or part of the car. So yes, what I said was absolutely true.

Gold mine in parts... bet that vacuum operated trunk opener is still good. All the components from that era car are easily rebuildable. The 425 engine is worth pulling for a rebuild with 3000 mile oil changes. Probably a good trans too. The maintenance record was the best find in the car. The car is savable, but the cost would be astronomical. I have seen worse restored... just go look at the 60 Fury that coldwarmotors is restoring!

Dunno why the owners put the 8 track upside down, interesting how it didn't get stolen in the early 70s. But yeah, that's a early aftermarket Jet 8 by Lear Jet. Ford was quick in introducing the 8 track, offering it on Mustang, Thunderbird, and Lincoln 1966 models in 1965. By 1967, Ford offered the 8 track as an option on ALL it's cars. Guess GM was slower to adapt lol Also early 8 track cartridges had the "Lear Jet Pak 8" on the back ^^ Score on the Jet 8, did you get it to work? And don't forget your gloves, we don't want ye to get sick!!!

Would complete the look! ^^ Just don't forget to open up the 8 track, clean the head & insides with rubbing alcohol, lube the main pulley, NOT the motor (yet), put in a new rubber band. 8 track should be 12 volt, so connect the "hot" and "ground" wires to a car cigarette jack. Hopefully you successfully cut the wires long enough. Good luck! ^^
