This is the commercial for the vintage twist n turn Barbie Doll. When she first came out, mattel offered a trade in, if girls turned in their #1 Ponytail Barbie, they would get a Twist N Turn Barbie half cost.

Well, back then it was the 60s, and this still happens now, basically, if the new barbie came out and you didn't have it, you would most likely get laughed at. And She couldn't buy a new barbie and keep hers because, back then, $1.50 was A LOT of money for a child to have. So, they wouldn't be able to buy it, and would have to trade in the old barbie. It just happens

Those who don't get why little girls would trade in old Barbies for new either don't know or have forgotten what it's like to be a little girl. When you're a kid you want the latest new thing, not something old. Also, the "old face" Barbies didn't really look right in the late-'60s "mod" Barbie fashions. You needed a new one to make those look good. Don't forget, little girls will always regard Barbie in terms of play value, not how much $ they might be able to get on Antiques Roadshow someday.

You didn't necessarily have to just trade in the 1959 Barbie doll. You could've traded in any older barbie. Such as the bubblecuts, and ponytails. I doubt it was specifically for the 1959 doll. As even in the promo the little girl gave in a swirl ponytail, and it had a cartoon picture of the bubblecut.

And this is why the American Girl hairstyle Barbies are so expensive. I'm lucky that I have the head of one of them (she's on a non-American Girl body). American Girl hairstyle is my favorite of the vintage dolls. It's just a bob with bangs, but it's adorable. For those curious about why they did this promo, kids usually only had 1 Barbie and then bought the fashions. So to sell the new dolls, it made sense to trade in the old dolls to get the new ones at a discount.

I can tell you what they probably did with my sister's Barbie. They made thousands of dollars off of her 1950's Brunette ponytail Barbie with the strapless Zebra swimsuit. Thanks a lot Marcia Brady ! To this day, my mother believes that Mattel knew that those ponytail Barbies were going to be worth alot and they cooked up this trading scheme to get some of them back. Mattel officially said the trade-in dolls were ultimately donated to charities. Found the information on a vintage Barbie blog from a few years ago. It took awhile for Barbie to become really popular, so fewer dolls. Some of my friend's Mom's back in the early 1960's though Barbie looked too "adult", and one school friend could only play with Francie and Casey dolls
