1967 VW Karman Ghia Customer bought on Ebay

Customer of ours bought this car on EBay. I love to buy and sell on eBay, but honeslty some Sellers are not so good. Those guybonly showed the good, he was hiding a lot. Frusterating to Ian who try to do a good job, we’re not perfect by any means but this guy flat out lied. Check this guys ad, and do a comparison, and let’s me know what you think.

WOW ! I hope you got your 12,000 back !!!! That is CRAZY the front end damage , holes and fender issue were not disclosed !!!! The door issues are common but still should have been mentioned but wow , the front end of that car is a nightmare .

Well the oil leaks are no big deal at all. New valve cover gaskets with some RTV, and a new strainer cover gasket. If it's a main seal or transmission input shaft seal, again no big deal. I can pull the motor out by myself in under 45 minutes on Type 1s. But that body! Holy crap that sucks! Kharmann Ghias are unibody. There are no quarter panels you can replace. Everything was butt welded, hand smoothed and soldered at the factory. No part lines anywhere on the body. The only way to fix one was to either pound out and massage the dent, or hack up a donor body which is obviously what was done here. In all my years experience with VWs I have only ever seen two that were correctly repaired, and those projects were years long, body removed from the pan and completely sanded down to bare metal with perfect butt welds at the factory locations. For that reason I would never buy a Kharmann Ghia without looking it over myself. Back in the late 80s, early 90s when I did a lot of VW work, the engine, transmission, steering box and suspension were all really easy and cheap to find parts for. Not so much anymore.

Buyer beware! The time to inspect a car is before you buy it, not after. If the buyer and / or you were so concerned about the condition of the car, you should have inspected it before you bought it, not bitch about it after. That's your own fault

In the early years, say 15 years ago, you could buy off eBay without being totally ripped off. That ended some years ago. I purchased a dozen or so cars without much of a problem. I always got a private party professional inspection when I couldn't go myself. About ten years ago, the inspectors were reporting problems and I had to cancel 3 purchases in a row. At that point I just said no more. I don't even consider an eBay vehicle now.

The cracking under the windshield on the sides is not bondo. The original makers of the car used lead,and it's now cracking. If you look at the angles of the sheet metal coming together at these points, the factory needed to fill this to make it all smooth. This is where they melted lead alloy as a type of metal patch. It is very common and will happen to all ghias, as the paint cracks on top of this lead.

Man I would Be Mad As Hell.....! If I bought that Carmen Ghia and they did not tell me it had been wrecked and had half of the front and replace....! I had a 58 V wagon that got hit in the left front side and even though it was repaired and looked pretty good it never drove decent again...!

What did it sell for? If the ad did not include previous damage, it should have. The way the doors fit are lue# 1, not the boot so much, but the front end damage is so obvious and the repairs so poorly done it can take the value down 50% . I'm sure it had pics of a nice paint and interior. Did it show the body line gaps? These are very difficult cars to purchase online. I have seen ads of very nice looking Ghias, only to see in person and test drive, just hoping I would make it back around the block. Most 40 year old vehicles need a in person inspection, and all Karmann Ghias. I purchased a 71 Vert 400 miles away sight unseen and found it was a 2 owner car never to have been wrecked. That was at the beginning of my collection days,and lucked out completely. That's a shame but too common . At this point, I would take a loss and purchase another car. Repairing costs are very high, it done correctly.

Had a 1967 Ghia in the early 1970’s it rusted out . They rust around the head lights , rocker panels and the floor board

I own a 70 convertible. These repairs are not uncommon, however the bodywork is very poor. Cut the front side off, find a parts car, and go to a quality restoration shop. Did the buyer not receive pics of the inside area that was repaired? Every car bought unseen is a risk, and I've done it several times. The Karmann Ghia is not a car to purchase without a professional inspection, or do it yourself. What did he pay for the car?

Looks like front passenger side "clip" was from a different car/year Ghia, not just a fender, with more bondo covering up other damage... The holes under dash might be from a gas heater. It would have been located in the from trunk and the heat outlet would be frimthat hole. It would have has an adjustable grill on it. The oil under the engine... bad or no gaskets in the oil screen area or the little brass washers that (10mm) nuts that hold it in. Also guys would cross thread the oil drain plug. Posh rod tubes always leak after a certain time. THAT'S just VW air cooled.. None of my business, but depends what he paid for it in this condition or how the seller presented it. MINT, Concourse, good, fair,... old restoration, salvage title, fair, or poor. Did he get what he paid for, or pay too much?

What kind of idiot buys a classic car online without even a professional inspection ? I guess the buyer needed a $12,000 lesson and how not to buy a classic car. You can get a professional classic car appraiser just about anywhere in the country to go look at a car and give you a report on condition and current value for about $100

I'm assuming it wasn't sold as an off body full restoration. It's over 50 years old. Nothing that can't be fixed But, if I'm spending $12,000, I'm gonna wanna see it in person. A trip to San Fran should have been in order Should have had that inspection from WEGOLOOK. Would have been money well spent. WTF, you're in oregon, car was in San Fran and your client never took the time to go see it? That's his fault PS: VW's leak oil The VIN plates are the only thing I see a problem with.

The problem is the guy lied to him, saying never been painted before, never in an accident those are big deals when people lie, but myself personally have learned to do my own homework, I never believe anyone til I see it with my own eyes!

OMG if you don't like repairing stuff don't buy a VW. I owned a 71VW bus for 12 yrs. When you buy a VW just assume you'll replace the motor. Also, steering box, trans and elecrical may need replacement/rebuild.

Never buy things such as cars off the net sight unseen, there's a million horror stories out there, this has been one of them. Definitely not a professional repair, for sure, going to cost a motza to make look half good. If it had been paid for with PayPal the whole purchase price could have been refunded, "goods not as described' , it was purchased on eBay wasn't it?
