As another comment mentioned, this 1968 was a 2nd gen Barracuda and a base model. The first gen was just a fastback Valiant. They rushed it out and it actually preceded the Mustang by a few weeks but few noticed… The 2nd gen had separate exterior styling but still similar dash, interior etc. Although they did stuff a HEMI in it for drag racing. It was the 3rd gen 1970 that separated itself and went wild with a curvy body and big engines. The Duster came in mid 1970 to fit back in as a sporty Valiant and compete with the Maverick.

The first-gen Barracuda had the misfortune to come out on April Fools Day 1964, two weeks before the Mustang was released and stole the show.

1967 was the first year for big block availability. The 383 was optional. It competed directly with the Mustang which offered their 390 for the first time in '67...

Gen II instrument cluster was unique to the Barracuda, actually. Yes, Hemi was available ('68 only, and only 50 built). This car is certainly not base, with V8, buckets and console shift auto, there's not much more you could order. Odd there's no radio, but with that stupid sticker on the lower part of the dash it's hard to say if it was actually delivered that way. Those rallye wheels as shown were not available until '70 MY. Duster was introduced late '69 as a '70 MY.

My dad has one of these. It doesn’t run yet but he absolutely loves it. It was my grandmas first car back in 1968, and then she passed it down to my dad.

Exactly! I’m hoping to buy an LHS, and I was shocked when I saw a video made on it yesterday. And now today, he does a Barracuda, my dad’s car!

Had a friend who thought it would be cool to buy one (in great condition) about 3 years ago, the tranny went out 2 years later at 147km (about 90,000 miles). Watch out!

My dad had a new '68 Barracuda, Formula S package with a 340 V8 and 4 speed manual. It hauled ass, handled extremely well and sounded incredible. It rumbled and shook at stoplights due to its 3/4 street grind cam. It was the best family car we ever had. Thanks for the memories.

My mom had a 69 Barracuda very similar in color. It came with the 340 4 barrel. That thing was a screamer. She loved burning the tires with that thing. I went to a very small country school. All the kids would come out and say peal out Misses Pavey and she would lay the rubber down. One year she came to school to eat with us for Christmas lunch. When she was fixing to leave all the kids came out to watch her peal out. When turned right to go home she nailed the throttle, she got loose in some gravel, the car went sideways hit a little tree on the right side rear quarter panel, that thing jumped the ditch on the other side of the road and did a couple donuts. We all ran down there and she was glued to the steering wheel. She knew my dad would get mad. But he didn’t, took it to the body shop had a racing stripe put on the sides. But that was the end of her racing days. That car would flat fly. I will always remember those days. She would fire that thing up put CCR in the 8 track and crank it up a jam down to Green River. Keeping my eye out for another Barracuda.

The 2nd gen Barracuda looks really nice, although rather unassuming and simple compared to its increasingly beefier and more iconic predecessors.

I remember the TV ads for these cars back when they were new. I was about 8 years old at the time. My favorite ad featured a guy showing his mom his brand new Barracuda. Mom was skeptical about her son's new "Banancuda with torsion bobbers in the superspension." I thought it was hilarious.

Nice, my friend owns a '68 coupe ( notch back) . Lighter than the fastback but with a mildly warmed over 360 transplanted from a '76 Cordoba ,the thing is an absolute beast.

Such a cool car. About 10 years ago I saw a 2nd gen barracuda in a magazine and instantly fell in love with the design. I saw a couple in person and couldn’t believe how cool they looked in person. Smaller than 70’s muscle cars but has such a cool presence and attitude just sitting.. I finally tracked one down to purchase for myself about 6 years ago that was in pretty rough shape but could still drive. The guy I bought it from got it started then told me I needed to put gas in it but to keep it running because he wasn’t sure he’d be able to get it started again 😂. I drove it 45 min south from LA and it’s been my labor of love ever since. I’ve never had a car get so many compliments. It’s nearly the same spec as this one.. 1968 with 318, but mines midnight blue.

Assuming it was the LA series 318 it was probably a direct drop in but I'm pretty sure it would have actually had the 4.5 L V8 273 cubic inch originally same engine family

In 67 you could get the 273… but they moved up to the 318 in 68…

The valve covers are aftermarket, the air cleaner too of course. Most likely there is a four barrel carburetor in this car, 318s usually were 2 barrel. If they changed this stuff, the cam shafts were likely upgraded too. This car should be much faster now than stock.

Almost bought a 68 cuda fastback in 1986. Didn't pull the trigger cuz it was bit rough w puke green faded paint! Ended up w a 74 nova 2 door with a 350 small block and it had hydrolic shocks on the rear so you could jack it up! 💪

These are overlooked and forgotten. It's a shame because they look decent and were respectably sporty. Mopar didn't figure out the muscle car until the third gen in 1970, by which point the muscle car era was nearly over and Ford and GM had been happily dominating the market. This was still a Valiant with a fastback.

Everytime I watch a video covering a barracuda fastback everyone forgets to mention it's a barracuda fastback. There's the fastback and notchback and we can Clearly see its a fastback but it still should be mentioned that it's a barracuda fastback and for those watching that are new to these cars they should be educated on what exactly it is. I currently own a lime green built 440 plymouth barracuda fastback tubbed up with centerlines on it and it will throw you back in the seat.

The center gauge, much like in the AMC Hornet could be many things. It could be: - a blank plate of nothing - a clock - a vacuum gauge - a tachometer If memory serves me, the ONLY cars to put anything in that hole as standard equipment, were the Barracuda Formula S models. An automatic car would get a vacuum gauge, while a 4-speed car got the tach. Everything else was optional at extra charge. Chrysler keys were "teeth up" because their engineers were a little smarter. Ever notice how worn out a "teeth down" GM key is?? That's because people usually drag the key across the bottom of the lock. Having the teeth on the top, meant the flat side of the key dragged and didn't wear out the tumblers. Chrysler was once upon a time known as the "Thinking Man's Company".

My '68 Barracuda had a factory 318 2BBL, 4 speed manual with a 8-3/4 rear. I bought it in NY and regret selling it to a Navy buddy in Jax, FL, knowing what that car would be worth today.

I wish Chrysler had built a BMW E30 sized car - 2,400 lb (four) to 2,650 lb(six) pound - and squeezed a V8 into it. Americans though a four cyl was cheap but BMW was finally able to get U.S. buyers to pay a premium price for a small car. GM failed with the Cosworth Vega but if they had kept the 215 Buick v8 - perfect!

It’s not far off, I believe the notchback was 2900 lbs… you could always get the smaller 1965 valiant with a 273… it was 2750lbs
